Subject: Folklore: Tyneside Songs C.Warrington on web now! From: *#1 PEASANT* Date: 23 Oct 04 - 06:04 PM Just about at least.... first of four volumes is now on the web with second almost done scanning...hope all will be up by tomorrow. Catchide Warrington produced this series with Windows in Newcastle. The importance of the colection is that it provides a standard collection of Newcastle songs for the period. 1920s.... Arrangements are for piano. Some quite dramatic. First volume is here: http://www.geocities.com/schomberg_1999/catchsidew1.html Great songs.... More soonly.... Conrad |

I have all four volumes (obviously reprints but in the original style)here at home. When I was a lad on Tyneside we had the real McCoy - My Dad used to be able to sing all of these songs. I love the little 'story' at the end of volumes 1,2 & 3 - Especially the two Geordies in Paris. Classic Stuff and great to see them being put on the internetty (Geordies will knaa worra mean) Juan P-B |

Subject: RE: Folklore: Tyneside Songs C.Warrington on web now! From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 25 Oct 04 - 08:08 PM Glad to see these. Good images of the songs. I can copy one by one, but if I right click on the volume, I download the vol. index, but when I click on a song, I get the message 'this page cannot be displayed.' When you are finished, will it be possible to download the volumes as a whole rather than song by song? |
Subject: RE: Folklore: Tyneside Songs C.Warrington on web n From: *#1 PEASANT* Date: 25 Oct 04 - 09:54 PM Just finished proofing page one....a few errors fixed....will go on and do the rest of them... Some browsers support saving web page with images and linked pages-I dont use this feature much but perhaps the browser will save the page and then save the linked images. When you vew the images in the browser window by the way they are shrunken to fit screen of browser. When you download individual images they are in reality much larger. I wish I could upload them as an archive but I dont have the space. The first version had all images on one page but with 24 or so large images it was almost unloadable..... The main value of most of these appart from their appearance in a collection is in the style of arrangement and tune. I have most of the lyrics in my beuk of Newcassel Sangs. Downloading individually should not take that long. Right click on image and save to file. Each image is numbered sequentially by volume so you can put them in the same directory. Not all numbers are there but there are only a few exceptions to number order and one can generally figure those out with out too much truble and then re number the images. No file name is used twice.... Have fun! Play the songs! Teach the songs... Conrad |
Subject: RE: Folklore: Tyneside Songs C.Warrington on web n From: *#1 PEASANT* Date: 26 Oct 04 - 07:07 AM Corrections done. Still looking for Biography for Catchefield Warrington and possible image of him....he had other names but I cant find my source for that-burried in the stacks.... Also...I started using a new browser which loads images in less than half the size - netscape just click on the image when it loads to enlarge. Learn the songs, play the songs, teach the songs. Subject: RE: Folklore: Tyneside Songs C.Warrington on web now! From: shepherdlass Date: 27 Oct 04 - 08:59 AM Yet again, Conrad, you're doing the jobs that everyone says should be taken care of but no one else finds the time. You're a hero. Have gleaned a few facts about Catcheside Warrington from Ray Stephenson's Potted History of Vernacular Recordings - he was a music hall act, touring the whole of England from at least the 1890s. His loud, clear voice made him a major figure in the nascent wax cylinder recording industry (you had to yell in order to make an impression in the wax) and he made a lot of the earliest recordings available (and not exclusively local material) - some of them faked commentaries of local football "derbies", where the outcome was adjusted according to the city where the recordings would be marketed. Interestingly, the version of the Blaydon Races tune which we sing today is his (the one in print tends to carry through), and is slightly different to the one recorded by J C Scatter in 1904 (I think). I'll try and send on more complete details when I've found the book where I got these facts - also an address where you can get hold of a copy. |
