Subject: Guilty pleasures (no, not THAT kind...)
From: lamarca

Thought this might be a fun separate thread topic, to keep it from degrading the Getaway Memories ....

What are your favorite rock/country western/disco/pop folk/punk songs for which you know ALL the words (including humming the 17-minute instrumental jam break)...you know, the ones you sing in the car when you're listening to WKRP-Classic Moldie Rock or KHCK Golden Country, etc, that you would be ashamed to let your "Purist Snob" folk friends know you know?

Here's a few of mine, culled from my vast collection of LPs sitting in boxes up in the junk room in our house...

A. I met a boy called Frank Mills on September 12th right here...

B. One pill makes you larger, and one pill makes you small...

C. Let me ride on the Wall of Death one more time...

D. Long, long time ago, I can still remember...

E. St. Stephen with a rose, in and out of the garden he goes...

F. When I first saw your gallery I liked the ones of ladies...

G. Rose, darling, come to me, Snake Mary's gone to bed...

H. No-one knows what it's like to be the bad man...

I. There is a young cowboy who lives on the range...

J. We-ee can never know about the day-ays to come...

K. I'll light the fire, while you place the flowers in the vase that you bought today...

L. Heeee had white horses and ladies by the score...

M. Mama, mama, forget your pies, I think they won't get cold... (from my very, very first purchased LP - anyone else recognize this atrocious song to which I actually still remember all the words?)

N. Pressed Rat and Wart Hog have closed down their shop...

O. The phone don't ring anymore, and the sun refuse to shine...

P. There's a red moon rising on the Cuyahoga River...

I could go on and on (and usually do), but it would be fun to see other folks favorites and guess our relative ages by the ones we pick!

Frank Mills? Damn! You are the only one besides me I ever heard that one from.

"I love him
But it embarrasses me
To walk down the street with him"

We had a quarrel, a teenage quarrel...

Laura and Tommy were lovers; he wanted to give her everything

Out in the west Texas town of El Paso

I sit in my room looking out at the rain...

That fateful night the car was caught upon the railroad track...

In the bad bad lands of Australia, many years ago...

There were green alligators and long necked geese...

He was born and raised around Jacksonville; a nice young man not the kind to kill...

These are the words of a frontiersman who lost his love when he turned bad...

On a weekend pass I wouldn't of had time to get home and marry that baby of mine...

Mostly tearjerkers. Big surprise.
We'll need a three hour workshop or maybe a night time song circle with a lot of whiskey...

Ahem, Rita - I don't think I've ever actually been permitted to lead a Workshop on "Forbidden Pleasures" (if I had been, they wouldn't be forbidden, now, would they?)

Bill D. and I have had our differences of opinion about taste ("This bus is drafty and you can't deny it..."), mainly because I have yet to find a genre of music that doesn't contain at least one song or number that has redeeming social value (well, I haven't actually given rap/hip-hop a chance to prove itself yet...)

Would other folks be interested in a workshop/song swap where we sing our favorite songs from our misguided youth? (Not to mention our misguided adulthood?) In addition to Jefferson Airplane, I used to be able to sing everything on Joni Mitchell's first 6 albums, I've snuck an occasional Cowboy Junkies song into song swaps, and I'm about to leave work to go hear Richard Thompson doing his "1,000 Years of Popular Music". If there are other kindred spirits out there who are just looking for their chance to do their jugband version of "Layla", let Rita know we need a Forbidden Pleasures workshop next year.

I'll bring the whips and mayonnaise.

Mary, I think it would be a load of fun! I also used to know a lot of Joni Mitchell songs, and there were the Troggs, and Tommy Whassisface and the Somethings ("I Think We're Alone Now"), and Lulu, and "Red Rubber Ball", and stuff I've forgotten I remember. It would be sort of like singing around a campfire with a bunch of people who're just folks, not folkies and are just singing what they know.

(One of the most fun times I had camping was when I went with my office. Someone found an oldies station, and we sat around the fire singing our brains out along with the radio.)

There are some people who sniffed and said "I don't like that. It's not traditional. Did you just write it?" when Barbry Allen was sung the first time ever.

Mary, you are more trouble sometimes ..... if you get me started I will do everything from about 1962 until 1970.

Mick as he goes off tiptoing through the tulips as he sings "last Train to Clarksville" and his girlfriend sings "Yummy Yummy Yummy I've ... oops, sorry folks. Got carried away there for a minute.

Hey, a number of us sang a lot of those forbidden songs at the Getaway on Friday night. I was surprised that Elizabeth LaPrelle knew so many of them. But yes, it would be nice to have a "forbidden songs" workshop.

hummmppff-first time Barbry Allen was sung, there WEREN'T much traditional 'ceptin some Druid Madrigals and other dull stuff like Egyptian water haulin' chants... ;~)

(I truly admire folks like my wife & lamarca who can sort out all those genrés and be eclectic enough to enjoy most of 'em...especially when those ladies know so many of the very old and 'trad' stuff to swamp me!)

we have had a few other Songs of the 60's and similar 'misguided youth' workshops at past Getaways...including, maybe 22-23 years ago, a sock hop" led by sometime poster Padre. I forget what I did instead...

Listen to my bluebird laugh....

There's a woman, and she's hard to know....

Oh, my love, my darling, I hunger for your touch....

Oh yeah, I tell you something....

Well shake it a baby, (shake it a baby)

Monday, Monday, so good to me .....

Hey-ey Joe, where you going with that gun your hand.....

I went down to the crossroads, got down on my knees....

G - L - O - R - I - A.....

Sloopy, let your hair down girl, let hang down on me....

And the name of the place is I like it like that ....

There is a little place beyond the tracks, the name of the place is the Sugar Shack....

I was out on a date, in my Daddy's car, we hadn't driven very far....

The eastern world, it is explodin', with violent flareups and bullets loadin'.....

Dammit, Sins, see what you got going????? I can't sleep thinking about all these lyrics.

Got to have this workshop next year.

Blu - ue Moon .....

As we stroll along together, holding hands walking all alone...

I got sunshine, on a cloudy day......

Baby love, my baby love.....

Eight miles high, and when we touched down....

C'mon baby, light fire, try to set the night on fire....

In a gadda da vida, baby ......

and when you can't be with the one you love, honey, love the one your with......

old man, look at yourself, I'm a lot like you are....

Keep me searching for this heart of gold, and I'm gettin' old....

I've seen the needle and the damage done....

Here comes the sun, doo doo doo...

And if you saw my love, you'd love her too, and I love her....

talkin' bout the times we road in my car...

I'm a little surprised to see that folks are guilty about singing Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, and Donovan songs. 30-35 years ago (i.e., back when I was much more of a folk-music snob than I am now), those songs would have been more than acceptable.

Now, those doo-wop oldies are another thing. They've always been a bit disreputable, just as they've always been great fun and real crowd pleasers. When I was in college in the late 60s, *some* of my peers might listen politely to my serious folk-blues repertoire, but I could always make a big hit at parties, with anyone and everyone, instigating singalongs on stuff like:

They often call me Speedo, but my real name is Mr. Earl...

In the still / of the ni-yight / o o o darlin / hold me ti-yight...

There's a moon out tonight / Let's go strollin'...

Wake up Little Susie, wake up... (and all Everly Brothers)

etc.

Don't have to go to the Getaway to get away with this.

Last summer (2003, when we had SOME leisure) us gals (Jeri, Ramona and me) would gather around Carol Caronis' swimming pool on Monday afternoons and settle in to some serious musical research (and margaritas). The topic of the summer -- "Dead Date" songs. You know, "Tell Laura I Love Her," "Leader of the Pack," "Dead Man's Curve," "Ebony Eyes," "Laurie," "Last Kiss" . . . ad nauseam.

Then, one night at the Friday night Press Room session I got up and did a long, intricate intro about how we had been gathering information about an under-researched sub-genre of American traditional music and how we hoped to get some funding and publish, etcet etcet . . . and then we broke in to "Patches" which I think, maybe, we had actually sung together once.

And then later the same evening I got suckered into singing "Long Black Veil" while Curmudgeon cringed.

ROFLMAO! Actually when I sing this stuff I don't feel a bit guilty! It's FUN! Lisa Null and I got started one night with "The Wayward Wind" at a party and continued with a fun blast from the past. When we were done with the fourteenth or fifteenth song, the rest of the party came back in the room....

Last year at Augusta Vocal Week, I was singing along happily with a group led by Flawn Williams and heard Danny Spooner behind me, singing along too:

"Did you say I've got a lot to learn? Well, don't think I'm trying not to learn. Since this is the perfect spot to learn, Teach Me Tonight."

... not what I expected to hear from an Australian shantey singer, still makes me grin to remember it.

Yeah, lots of Everley Brothers songs, and ...

As I was a-motivatin' over the hill, I saw Maybelline in a coupe de ville....

I told Mary about us, told her about our great sin....

Well you can burn my house, steal my car, drink my liquor from an old fruit jar....

Well since my baby left me, I've found a new place to dwell....

Now she's afraid to come out of the water, and I dont' know what she's gonna do, she's afraid to come out of the water, and the poor little thing's turning blue....

It was the third of June, another [something], dusty delta day, I was out picking cotton and my brother was a-baling hay, ...

You give your hand to me, and then you say hello, and I can hardly speak, my heart is beating so, ...

I hear the whippoorwill whisper above, Tammy, Tammy, Tammy's in love....

Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa men have named you....

Out where the bright lights are glowing, you're drawn, like a moth to a flame, You laugh while the wine's overflowing, while I sit and whisper your name.

I think these are all from the 50's or later, but a songs from the 40's just started popping into my head -- but I'm going to resist! Yes, I am!

    Dig, dig, dig-a-rooney
    Dig, dig, dig, dig-a-rooney
    Dig, dig, dig-a-rooney
    Dig, you crazy cat!
Don't forget the Four Seasons:
    Big girls do-on't cry-y-y
    My girl - didn't cry....
When I was in the seminary, we'd gather in the vestibule of the chapel before evening prayers, smoke cigarettes, and sing Engelbert Humperdinck songs:
I had the last waltz with you
    Two lonely people together
I fell in love with you
The last waltz should last forever
La la la la la la la la la la

There goes my reason for living, there goes my everything....

Please release me, let me go,
For I don't love you anymore.
To live a lie would be a sin.
Release me and let me love again.
(but I admit I didn't know all the words of Engelbert's songs)

When I was a bit younger, it was "My friend the witch doctor" and "Flying Purple People Eater." ("Dig" was earlier still.)

Which reminds me:
Look at me I'm as helpless as a kitten up a tree...

She ran calling Wiiiiiiild Fiiiiiiiyeh

Three little fishees and a Momma fishee too

Hey there Little Red Riding Hood.
You sure are looking good...

Wild thing! You make my heart sing!

I can't get no satisfaction

This should go on forever
This should never ever end...banned by our local nuns for the line:
My soul will never be free ee ee ee

You've gone from me

Can't wait until Ron Davies sees this one. He'll know all the chords too.

I'll add my name to the very short list of people who know the lyrics to "Frank Mills".

A bright array of city lights as far as I can see...
(I think it's one of the greatest country-western songs ever written, but I'm sure my friends would not agree. The same goes for:
I'm walking the floor over you, I can't sleep a wink, that is true..
I got the hungries for your love and I'm waitin' in your welfare line...
Who is the girl wearin' nothin' but a smile and a towel on the picture on the billboard near the big ol' highway....
The bridge washed out and I can't swim and my baby's on the other side...
Or any country song from the 50's and early 60's.

and from the Rock and Roll world:
I met him at a party and my heart stood still, da do run run, da do run run...
Oh bla de, o bla dah, life goes on.....
Mrs. Brown, you've got a lovely daughter...
Woke up this morning feeling fine, there's someone special on my mind...
(or anything by Herman's Hermits.

And quite a few that have already been mentioned.
Steve, on my way out to run some errands singing "Tell Laura I love her" whether I want to or not.

All our times have come.....Come on, baby, don't fear the reaper...

Diamond life, lover boy-oy, He moves in space with minimum grace and maximum joy..
(I did this in two-part harmony with a total stranger at our lab's Department Picnic Karaoke contest...)

Pretty Ballerina! Big Mick, that reminds me of the only time I got to here Leo Kretzner (Lap dulcimer player extraordinaire) in concert - his encore was "Just Walk Away, Renee" and a Motown song, both of which really, really worked on dulcimer!

I went to hear Richard Thompson doing his "1,000 Years of Popular Music" concert this week. It was Thompson, Debra Dobkin on drums and Judith Owen (AKA Mrs. Harry Shearer) on sultry vocals. They started with "Summer is Icumin In" from a 13th century setting, then a Scottish version of "The Cruel Mother", an aria by Henry Purcell, an English carol from the 1700's, Gilbert and Sullivan, etc - but the fun started for real when they got to the twentieth century...

Drinkin' Wine, Spoh-di-oh-di, Please Don't Play A-11, Cole Porter, early Beatles, Sun Records rockabilly, the Easy Beats only hit (Friday on My Mind), the Kinks, a Prince number (Thompson referred to him as "that little purple dude from Minneapolis") and, as his piece d'resistance, a Thompsonized version of Britney Spears' "Oops, I've Done It Again". It was a great show -they played for two hours straight, then did another six songs in two encores (he even got the audience singing along with "Sam Hall"). The only kind of music out-of-bounds for this show was Thompson's own material - they didn't do any of his songs.

This show was an excellent example of how familiarity with lots of different musical styles and songs can enrich a musician's song-writing and/or instrumental performance. Thompson and the ladies were obviously having the time of their lives, and their skill and enthusiasm made it fun for the audience, too.

So, while we joke that knowing all these pop songs is a "Guilty Pleasure", I somehow suspect that there's a spark of our love of all the music we gobbled up over the years shining in the songs we sing now...

I thought the strange girl lured the boy in and kept him prisoner inside her radio - something like:

Everyone knows that a boy disappeared
And everyone thinks he died
Except a ?????? girl with a secret lover
Who keeps her satisfied

last May, at a weekend similar to the Getaway, but with no 'structure', a fellow sat down at a late night sing and sang "
She wears red feathers and a hooley hooley skirt.. " .......I had NEVER heard it before, and he did it so well!
It figgers you'd know it, Snuffy...what a strange song!

Julie, Julie, Julie do you love me?
Julie, Julie, Julie do you care?
Julie, Julie, are you thinking of me?
Julie, Julie will you still be there?

I hope no one on my department finds out that I know the above. I mean, what kind of cop sings James Darrin? or was that Bobby Sherman? It doesn't matter, they were both the same person.

Beach baby, beach baby, there on the sand from July to the end of September.....

Pussycat, Pussycat, I've got flowers and lots of hours to spend with you, so go and powder that cute little pussycat nose..... I sang that to my cat once, again, I hope no one on my department finds out.

Funny, I didn't see any TV theme songs in this thread. I must have missed them. There have to be some here, right?
I'm Tom Terrific, the greatest hero ever, I can be whatever I want because I am so clever....

Below in the deep there's adventure and danger, that's where you'll find Diver Dan...

crowds will cheer you, you're our hero, as you go go GO Astroboy!!!

You know, you can't tell a person's age by their repertoire of pop songs any more; Darriel learned "Unchained Melody" from an Oldies CD while he was in middle school, and learned "Snoopy and the Red Baron" and "Please Mr. Custer" in high school. He also learned "Mr. Ed" while he was in elementary school, I think he was watching re-runs.

Snuffy, delighted to see Tennessee Wigwalk, here's another:

Oh remember me, my darling, When spring is in the air
And the bald-headed birds are whispering everywhere.
When you see them walking southward in their dirty underwear,
That's the Tennessee Birdwalk! [twweeet tweet]
That's the Tennessee Birdwalk!"

I dunno!

Finally made it out of the dark side (below the line where it's all serious-like) to UP ON THE ROOOOOOOF here WHERE LIFE IS FRESH AND SWEEEEET

Sinsull---sorry I don't know the chords to Tragedy (or anything else). I know lyrics but there was a guy there in the dining hall on Friday who was really good on guitar but NO NO NO IT AIN'T ME BABE

Man that was great stuff that Friday- I think we coulda gone about half an hour just on Everly Brothers, then slipped into doo-wop for an hour or so and then...?

Amazing amount of stuff you can do totally without guitar, even if it was originally with it.

And it's fun to try to reconstruct how the harmonies might possibly have gone (or maybe they didn't, but it's still fun.)

I also agree with Ranger Steve-- A bright array of CITY LIGHTS (I think Ray Price had an early hit with that)-----is probably one of the best country songs ever.

And Rita, you know that I love it when you and Lisa and maybe some others get going on the 50's stuff at my parties (or anywhere else).

And Bill as far as I'm concerned you could do "Managua,Nicaragua" every time I see you and I'd love it (but of course I'm weird----I'd also want you to do "Bold Fisherman" every time----and you've given me flak for that.)

But if we started doo-wop etc., it would be so frustrating if it was only for an hour---but it would also be frustrating to miss other great workshops.

Starting in the dining hall right after supper is great----gives the whole evening and maybe long into the night.

When I go up to the Eastern Pennsylvania Journey's End weekend   (are you reading this, Tony?) a bunch of us (a small bunch, but more would sure be welcome) start it after the big sing is over (about midnight) and we go til about 4 usually--sometimes a guitar, sometimes not-----but the unaccompanied stuff is probably my favorite----especially when we do Everly Brothers--sounds great, easy, and room for lots of harmony---or put together Mamas and Papas the way we think it might have gone, or Beach Boys, ( and our guesses I think are pretty good.) Some of our other productions may crash and burn but this is one situation where you really can make music (successfully) by committee---particularly dredging one brain and then another for lyrics buried down deep (AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS MINE LIES A BIG BIG MAN.)

Rita - when my twins were very small I always used to sing to them while giving them a bath. Tennessee Wigwalk was one of their favourites.

Bill D - She Wears Red Feathers is now part of my regular repertoire. Lots of folks remember it from their younger days. And there aren't many songs where you can invite all the bodhrans to pretend they are tom-toms and join in on the chorus.

And how dare you accuse me of singing "strange songs" when you are a known perpetrator of Mrs Ravoon? :-)
