Copied from a post to the Flatpick list on an ongoing topic there:

1) Learning a half-dozen fiddle tunes well enough to actually play melody in a jam. My projects are: Little Beggarman (in A); St. Anne's Reel (in D); BMR (in C capoed up, like Doc does it - I've been working on this, on and off, for just about 40 years, since Doc's first Vanguard album came out - is that a record?); Sailor's Hornpipe (in C); Garryowen (in G); and maybe Soldier's Joy.

2) Learning all the words to The Castration of the Strawberry Roan, and California Joe. Then I can do a whole set with just two songs.

Peter.

Anyone else have a special project underway?

Dont fear singing Skipy... I was nervous of singing in public for years. Have had a lot of encouragement since 2000, now it comes naturally when I want it to. I dont sing unless I want to, then I dont listen to folk who tell me I have to sing in G or D so they can play along. I sing what I want to sing, even if its the same song for weeks.... its Raglan ROad at the min in A, as it sounds nice accompanied.

Suppose my winter project is to brush up on songs Ive put aside as I learn new ones.

I like the selection of tunes Midchuck. I would add Kid on the Mountain to that and Cup of Tea. Ive been working on them for ages.

Midchuck - a worthy list. I'm assuming BMR is Black Mountain Rag. I didn't realize Doc did it out of a C capoed up. Most of the guitar pickers I know play it in G capoed up to A - so that fiddles, mandolins and banjos can join the fun.

Where in the world did you hear "California Joe" I recorded an itinerent fiddle player singing it years ago, and haven't ever heard a commercial recording of it. I have seen the poem it came from by an early day scout/poet whose name I've just spaced out - damn CRS!

Well, I just started a singing group for Welsh learners who want to learn folk songs and the kind of things that get sung in pubs. One meeting so far and wasn't too bad considering I was deep in a Cold and lost my voice half way through. I'll be happy if we make it to Spring and they learn ... 15 songs?
