Subject: BS: Useful New Word From: GUEST,mack/misophist Date: 27 Oct 04 - 12:10 PM Our mates in Australia have come up with a new slang term that looks like it may be useful. I saw it used to describe the Manchester Guardian . If that offends you, use it some other way, it's only a word. And the word is "watermelon". A 'watermelon' is green on the outside, red on the inside, and completely lacking in substance. |

Subject: RE: BS: Useful New Word From: Liz the Squeak Date: 27 Oct 04 - 08:23 PM It's a food, it's a drink, it's a facewash! Big pink watermelons don't really have any substance... you could eat one and then want another 20 mins later... I suspect the usage means an item that looks large and satisfying, but leaves one strangely ungratified. A bit like being a seagull at work... you fly in, crap all over everyone and fly off again. Subject: RE: BS: Useful New Word From: frogprince Date: 27 Oct 04 - 08:26 PM True, you could eat another one 20 minutes later, but I never thought of washing my face with a big chunk of watermelon as "ungratifying". |
Subject: RE: BS: Useful New Word From: Ebbie Date: 27 Oct 04 - 08:28 PM All I can think of is El Greko's song 'Watermelon Seeds'. He said that it is common in Greece to refer to children that way. |
Subject: RE: BS: Useful New Word From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 27 Oct 04 - 08:37 PM The expression was first used by the Aussie right wing wankers to try to discredit Bob Brown - of the Greens Party. Aussies just laughed that one off - the Green ideas must have been hurting bad for such US style political comments to be made. Bob has a lot of respect for being the only politician to refuse to be gagged in the Aussie Parliament when "Fathead George" spoke there. We still haven't forgotten that the US is the only country to violate Aussie Sovereignty by refusing to allow security to be handled by Australian, but only by the CIA. Only Real Dictators do that stunt. |

Subject: RE: BS: Useful New Word From: leeneia Date: 28 Oct 04 - 09:55 PM Watermelon is a good source of iron. My community blood center says so, to people who are too anemic to donate. |
Subject: RE: BS: Useful New Word From: GUEST,Peter from Essex Date: 29 Oct 04 - 05:37 PM Manchester Guardian? But what about the page 3 girls in the Daily Herald? |
Subject: RE: BS: Useful New Word From: SINSULL Date: 29 Oct 04 - 05:57 PM Don't they call children watermelon seeds because of what Mom looks like after she has swallowed one. As a child I was told that a pregnant lady had swallowed a watermelon seed. Believed it for years and vowed never to make that mistake. |
Subject: RE: BS: Useful New Word From: freda underhill Date: 29 Oct 04 - 06:22 PM watermelon - green on the outside, red on the inside - as Foolestroupe said, its a kind of reds under the beds comment, as in they're pretending to be Greens (Green party members, environmentalists) but watch out, theyre all closet commies. another similar one is used in the Koori (aboriginal) communities. If someone is aboriginal, but has no loyalty to the community or is a wannabe white boy, thyre called coconut (black on the outside, white on the inside). |
