The song was written by US recording professionals Arthur Fields (words) and Fred Hall (music) and copyrighted in April 1930. The first recordings were by Vernon Dalhart (for several labels, 1929–30) and John I. White, a.k.a. the Lone Star Ranger, whose UK Imperial 78 of the song is referred to above.

Recorded in February 1931 by a Fields-Hall-and-friends group billed as the Colt Brothers, it was issued in the US on Melotone and in the UK on Panachord. On the back of its UK popularity, numerous other Colt Brothers 78s were released on Panachord over the next few years, including "Eleven More Months and Ten More Days" Parts 3 & 4.

I've a strong memory of this song's chorus from a 78rpm record of my dad's in the early 1950s -- sung in (what seemed to me at the time) a loose American harmony style.
(I'm talking about UK recordings and possibly British radio connections, though I have no awareness of that.)

He had other 78s which seemed similar to me then, such as 'Swaller- tail Coat' --

          Gonna dress myself up in my swaller-tail coat,
          With a jingle in my pocket and a song in my throat.
          Gonna hold my head high, for my honey's reply -
          Put a million, billion rainbows in the sky (dee dum, dee dee dum ba dee ba dee dee

And a name which sticks from that long-ago time is 'Troise and his Mandoliers' -- does this ring any bells with 'Catters?

Jim,
6 years late, but the tune is pretty close to 'Tommy Bell/ Rumpsy Bumpsy Ay' a music hall song, and to an extent the Geordie song 'Hey wor Nannie's a Mazor'. It also has affinity to 'The Laughing Policeman' but in a different metre.

My dad was born in London England and came over around 1907. As a boy in the 1950's, I heard him singing the chorus, but the repeat went:

In eleven more months and ten more days
I'll tell ya' what ta do."

I used play this song on a 78 rpm wind-up Gramophone during World War 2 whilst at my Grand Fathers in Reading Berks where I was sent away from the bombing of London. Brings back great boyhood memories; only wish I knew who sang it!

I had the same 78 forty years ago and I still sing Will The Angels Play Their Songs For Me but I've never been able to remember all of this one. Thanks folks. I remembered it as I've been in the lockup twenty days. So even in my the folk process must be going on

The second instalment started

I'm in the hoojah once again Just like I was before.
I got the same old stretch to do 'leven months and ten days more.
I got another year in jail and here's the reason why

A guy got up before the judge he acted kind of sore.

Jack Hylton and his Orchestra recorded a version that spans both sides of a 78-rpm record. Mostly the lyrics are the same as the ones I posted above, but with a few words changed, e.g. football instead of baseball, stealing a goal instead of stealing a base. It also had 3 more verses. (I don't think it matters much where you insert them.) There are a couple of doubtful phrases:

I've lived here forty years. It doesn't seem a day too much.
There ain't no palace in the land I'd swap for My Old Dutch.
Now for a song to tell about the jolly life we know,
And when we get to the chorus, boys, sing up and let it go.

They put a nice young fellow in the electric chair one day.

[In a mock-female voice:]

Joe Offer: Yes, it is strange that this song contains a verse from FIVE NIGHTS DRUNK, but that's the way Vernon Dalhart sings it. Maybe Dalhart inserted that verse to give a suggestion of how he ended up in jail. The song was written by Arthur Fields & Fred Hall in 1930, but I don't know how closely Dalhart stuck to the words they wrote.

Am I right in thinking most of those guys are British, and the song is better known in Britain than in the US? I had never heard of it myself, before this thread.

Maybe someone with a better grasp of British accents would like to try transcribing the other 2 versions that I gave links to.

The tune is familiar, though the words are not. It sounds a bit like Draft Dodger Rag, but with fewer notes per measure. I have a hunch the tune is older than the song. Anybody recognize it?

On Saturday I found a copy of the 78 I lost! It's unbelievably noisy, but the sound cleaned up far better than I'd expected, after some time with GoldWave. "Chuffed" is not a sufficiently strong word for how I feel!

July 29, 2002 On leaving church yesterday I sang the first few lines of "eleven more months" to a group of younger folks (to me everyone is) I was very surprised to learn none of them had ever heard this favorite of mine. Hey, Steve - that one line about Friday night seems to come from a different song, one of many variations of Our Goodman. My brain mixes songs together like that, too. So does the "folk process," for that matter....
