From: GUEST,Tony Russell

The song was written by US recording professionals Arthur Fields (words) and Fred Hall (music) and copyrighted in April 1930. The first recordings were by Vernon Dalhart (for several labels, 1929–30) and John I. White, a.k.a. the Lone Star Ranger, whose UK Imperial 78 of the song is referred to above.

Recorded in February 1931 by a Fields-Hall-and-friends group billed as the Colt Brothers, it was issued in the US on Melotone and in the UK on Panachord. On the back of its UK popularity, numerous other Colt Brothers 78s were released on Panachord over the next few years, including "Eleven More Months and Ten More Days" Parts 3 & 4.

Does anyone have access to a recording of Swaller-Tail Coat? I remember the old 78 well, many years ago, and would love to hear it again.

Yours is the only version anyone has posted that contains the electric chair verse I remember my Dad singing when I was a kid (he's 95 now and just remembered a snatch of it the other day)

The couplet you were looking for is

"I've always been a gentleman," said he, "and I *entreat*
If there's a lady present, I'd like to give her my seat."

They put a nice young fellow in the electric chair one day.
They asked him if he'd anything that he would like to say.
"I've always been a gentleman," said he, "and I insist, (?)
If there's a lady present, I'd like to give her my seat."

I've a strong memory of this song's chorus from a 78rpm record of my dad's in the early 1950s -- sung in (what seemed to me at the time) a loose American harmony style.
(I'm talking about UK recordings and possibly British radio connections, though I have no awareness of that.)

He had other 78s which seemed similar to me then, such as 'Swaller- tail Coat' --

Gonna dress myself up in my swaller-tail coat,
With a jingle in my pocket and a song in my throat.
Gonna hold my head high, for my honey's reply -
Put a million, billion rainbows in the sky (dee dum, dee dee dum ba dee ba dee dee
                                                                                                                                    dum.)

We'll be honeymooning in the morning,
We'll be honeymooning in the evening.
Gonna count the minutes till the dawning
When we'll sing love's sweet song (dee dee dum, dee dee dum ba dee ba dee dee
                                                                                                                               dum.)

And a name which sticks from that long-ago time is 'Troise and his Mandoliers' -- does this ring any bells with 'Catters?

Jim,
6 years late, but the tune is pretty close to 'Tommy Bell/ Rumpsy Bumpsy Ay' a music hall song, and to an extent the Geordie song 'Hey wor Nannie's a Mazor'. It also has affinity to 'The Laughing Policeman' but in a different metre.

My dad was born in London England and came over around 1907. As a boy in the 1950's, I heard him singing the chorus, but the repeat went:

In eleven more months and ten more days
I'll tell ya' what ta do."

I used play this song on a 78 rpm wind-up Gramophone during World War 2 whilst at my Grand Fathers in Reading Berks where I was sent away from the bombing of London. Brings back great boyhood memories; only wish I knew who sang it!

There were, I think, two instalments of "In eleven more months and ten more days"

The second instalment started

I'm in the hoojah once again Just like I was before.
I got the same old stretch to do 'leven months and ten days more.
I got another year in jail and here's the reason why
I didn't like the wife's new hat so I socked her in the eye.

A guy got up before the judge he acted kind of sore.
The judge said, "Now it seems to me, I've seen your face before".
The prisoner said, "You bet you did, You see it every day.
I sell the best corn liquor that they make around this way.

That's all I can remember

Jack Hylton and his Orchestra recorded a version that spans both sides of a 78-rpm record. Mostly the lyrics are the same as the ones I posted above, but with a few words changed, e.g. football instead of baseball, stealing a goal instead of stealing a base. It also had 3 more verses. (I don't think it matters much where you insert them.) There are a couple of doubtful phrases:

I've lived here forty years. It doesn't seem a day too much.
There ain't no palace in the land I'd swap for My Old Dutch.
Now for a song to tell about the jolly life we know,
And when we get to the chorus, boys, sing up and let it go.

They put a nice young fellow in the electric chair one day.
They asked him if he'd anything that he would like to say.
"I've always been a gentleman," said he, "and I insist, (?)
If there's a lady present, I'd like to give her my seat."

[In a mock-female voice:]
The warden said to me today, "How would you like a ride?"
"I think I'd like it awfully much, but do you think it wise?"
"How'd you like to wave my hair (?) just once or twice a week?"
I said, "What do you take me for?" and he kissed me on the cheek!

Joe Offer: Yes, it is strange that this song contains a verse from FIVE NIGHTS DRUNK, but that's the way Vernon Dalhart sings it. Maybe Dalhart inserted that verse to give a suggestion of how he ended up in jail. The song was written by Arthur Fields & Fred Hall in 1930, but I don't know how closely Dalhart stuck to the words they wrote.

Below my transcription of the Vernon Dalhart recording at The Record Lady's All-Time Country Favorites.

It was also recorded by [in no particular order] Lone Star Ranger (John White), Gunboat Billy, Mack Allen (V. Dalhart), Billy Cotton & His Band, Al Craver (V. Dalhart), Bert Ambrose and his Orchestra, Jack Hylton and his Orchestra (There is a sound file on this page.), The Borstal Collegians, Al Bowlly, the Sons of the Pioneers, Johnny Bond, The Rhythmic Eight (sound file here), Dick Unteed, and Frank Dudgeon.

Am I right in thinking most of those guys are British, and the song is better known in Britain than in the US? I had never heard of it myself, before this thread.

Maybe someone with a better grasp of British accents would like to try transcribing the other 2 versions that I gave links to.

The tune is familiar, though the words are not. It sounds a bit like Draft Dodger Rag, but with fewer notes per measure. I have a hunch the tune is older than the song. Anybody recognize it?

ELEVEN MORE MONTHS AND TEN MORE DAYS
(As sung by Vernon Dalhart)

1. I'm in the hoosegow twenty days. Just twenty days ago
I met the judge, the kind old judge, who was feeling fine and so
He gave me just a year in jail, a sociable sort of a gink,
All on account of a gallon of corn that I thought I could drink.

2. Now, I came home one Sat'day night as tight as I could be.
I saw a hat on top of the rack where my hat ought to be.
"What is that?" I asked my wife. "It's a frying pan," said she,
But a frying pan with a hat band on I never before did see.

CHORUS: Oh, in eleven more months and ten more days
I'll be out of the calaboose.
In eleven more months and ten more days
They're gonna turn me loose.

3. The other day the warden said, "We'd like to bring you cheer,
And give you lots of different sports while you are staying here.
Now, just what athletic do you think that you would like?"
I said, "If it's all the same to you, I'd like to go on a hike."

4. Now, we play baseball once a week, and you should see the score!
Every player steals the base. They've stolen things before.
There's lots of folks would like to come and see us when we play,
But they built a wall around the place to keep the crowd away. CHORUS

5. A visitor passing by my cell, just the other day,
I called him from my window and I said, "Now, stranger, say,
Can you tell me what time it is?" He looked me in the face,
And said, "What do you care what time it is? You ain't going anyplace."

6. A bird in another cell asked me, "How long are you in here for?"
I told him that I'd be here eleven months and ten days more.
"I'm here until tomorrow," said he. I said, "You son of a gun!
You're a lucky guy." He said, "Am I? Tomorrow I'm gonna be hung." CHORUS

7. Another guy with a ten-year stretch got three years off his bit
For being a model prisoner, so I shook him by the mitt.
They're giving a celebration for that lucky son of a gun,
Because his father's awful proud to have such a wonderful son. CHORUS

July 29, 2002 On leaving church yesterday I sang the first few lines of "eleven more months" to a group of younger folks (to me everyone is) I was very surprised to learn none of them had ever heard this favorite of mine. I don't remember any of the other lyrics after the first part....."I'll be out of the calaboose" Was pleased to find additional lyrics on the web site. I will print them off. thanks. dave Lewis

Hey, Steve - that one line about Friday night seems to come from a different song, one of many variations of Our Goodman. My brain mixes songs together like that, too. So does the "folk process," for that matter....

Thanks, Bert. I remember some odd lines:

I'm in the hoosegow 20 days, just 20 days ago
I met the judge, a kind old judge who was feeling fine and so
He gave me just a year in gaol, a sociable sort of a gink,
All on accunt of a gallon of corn that I thought I could drink.

Well, I came home on Friday night as drunk as I could be.
I saw a hat upon the rack where my hat ought to be.
"Now what is that?" I asked my wife. "It's a frying pan!" said she,
But a frying pan with a hat band on I never before did see!

The warden said "We'd like to [...]
And give you lots of different sports [...]
[...] What sport would you like?"
I said "If it's all the same to you, I'd like to go on a hike."
(This last verse goes before the baseball verse)

I had an old 78 disc of this, with "Will the angels play their harps for me?" on the other side, by a different artist. It got lost many years ago in a house move.

Wow! I can't believe I couldn't find this in DT.
Oh well, here goes from memory.
ELEVEN MORE MONTHS AND TEN MORE DAYS

A kind old lady called on me, she was just too good to live.
She asked me all about myself, my pedigree to give
She said to me "What brought you here" and the tears began to drop.
I said "A Black Maria and a great big Irish Cop"

Chorus..
In eleven more months and ten more days
I'll be out of the calaboose.
In eleven more months and ten more days
They're gonna turn me loose.

A stranger passing by my cell, just the other day.
I called him from my window and I said "Now stranger say,
can you tell me what time it is" And he looked me in the face,
said "What do you care what time it is, you ain't goin' any place."

Chorus..
A guy in another cell asked me, "How long are you in here for"
I told him I was here eleven months and ten days more
"I'm in here 'till tomorrow" he said. I said "you're a son of a gun,
You're a lucky guy" He said "Hell Why, tomorrow I'm gonna be hung"

Chorus..
Another guy with a ten year stretch got three years off his list,
for being a model prisoner, so I shook him by the fist.
They're having a celebration for that lucky son of a gun,
because his Father's awful proud to have such a wonderful son.

Chorus..
We play baseball once a week, you should see the score
Every player steals the base, they've stolen things before.
We would like you folks to see us when we play
but they built a wall around the place to keep the crowds away.

Chorus..

I'm sure there were more verses we used to sing but I can't recall them at the moment. Bert.
