Subject: RE: Liege & Lief From: chris nightbird childs Date: 28 Oct 04 - 09:47 AM The sound even on the original CD is very good... I can't stop listening to it!! |
Subject: RE: Liege & Lief From: Chris Green Date: 28 Oct 04 - 09:49 AM Apparently the pick-up for the fiddle was a converted hearing aid! Dunno if it's true but I'd like it to be! |
Subject: RE: Liege & Lief From: Pete_Standing Date: 28 Oct 04 - 11:10 AM According to the notes in "Swarb" (a Freed Reed complilation), he used the mouthpiece of a telephone on Unhalfbricking, which was the album prior to Liege and Lief. The sound on the two albums is pretty similar, so maybe he used the mouthpiece on Liege and Lief too. |
Subject: RE: Liege & Lief From: Nerd Date: 28 Oct 04 - 03:17 PM I had always understood it to be a telephone, too. Swarb did not need hearing aids until much later, so it's unlikely he had one lying around at the time, but it is possible as the hearing aid would be smaller than the mouthpiece! It's an absolute classic, of course. I first bought it after the Folk Roots reader's poll in 1986. Enjoy! |

Subject: RE: Liege & Lief From: Blissfully Ignorant Date: 28 Oct 04 - 11:12 PM I love Richard Thompson's solo material, but i'm not familiar with Fairport Convention... Would i like it? And would Liege and Leif be a good one to get? :) |
Subject: RE: Liege & Lief From: chris nightbird childs Date: 28 Oct 04 - 11:26 PM OH yes... I can't wait to hear more myself! It's wonderful... |
Subject: RE: Liege & Lief From: GUEST,Jon Date: 29 Oct 04 - 03:35 AM My introduction to Fairport was when L & L was first released. I then bought everything they did. But L & L is still probably my favourite. Those who haven't listened to it yet have really missed out. |
Subject: RE: Liege & Lief From: masato sakurai Date: 29 Oct 04 - 09:55 AM I've got one LP and two CDs. This one has two previously unreleased bonus tracks, 'Sir Patrick Spens' & 'The Quiet Joys of Brotherhood.' |
Subject: RE: Liege & Lief From: Greyeyes Date: 29 Oct 04 - 10:03 AM Voted the most influential folk album of the Twentieth Century a few years ago by BBC Radio 2 listeners. |
Subject: RE: Liege & Lief From: chris nightbird childs Date: 29 Oct 04 - 11:46 AM Quite rightly! I now understand what all the fuss surrounding Fairport and Sandy Denny is about. Like I said I can't wait to venture further. I've got a feeling that she will become one of my favorite singers... |
Subject: RE: Liege & Lief From: Pete_Standing Date: 29 Oct 04 - 12:04 PM She does some cracking stuff on Fotheringay, the band she formed on leaving Fairport. |
Subject: RE: Liege & Lief From: Alba Date: 29 Oct 04 - 01:27 PM all I can say is.....L & L is the Best. You would certainly not be disappointed Blissfully Ignorant (hard to type your Mudcat name as it makes me feel like I am insulting you...lol). When I first bought the album (LP) I remember getting up during the night and playing it because I couldn't sleep as I was so excited about the Sound.....ah Youth...:>) Blessings Jude |
Subject: RE: Liege & Lief From: Pete_Standing Date: 29 Oct 04 - 05:56 PM It was the combination of Ashley's drive to seek out and interpret his heritage in the best way he knew, Sandy's terrific voice and delivery, Richard and Swarb with their vituosity and Mattack's approach to drumming that made this such a ground breaking album. Full House successfully continued this brave journey into folk rock, but without Sandy and Ashley. I reckon the band hit the spot again with the underated Nine line up but the final line up before Swarb departed should no be overlooked either. It showed what a fine guitarist Simon Nicol is, and the band's interpretation of the Bonny Bunch of Roses (where Swarb doesn't even touch his fiddle) shows that a folk rock band can succeed in the unphrased arrangements typical of the traditional singers - what a contrast to Steeleye when they went through their Status Quo/Mike Batt phase. The current line up is crewed by excellent musicians, but I feel that since Swarb has gone, their tendency to eschew trad material is lamentable - but still a bloody good band! Liege and Lief - a desert island disc. |
Subject: RE: Liege & Lief From: Blissfully Ignorant Date: 29 Oct 04 - 11:25 PM THat's ok, Alba, I'm so blissfully ignorant i wouldn't know even if i was being insulted :0) I'll keep my eye out for the album, my dad probably has it somewhere! :0) |
Subject: RE: Liege & Lief From: fogie Date: 30 Oct 04 - 04:38 AM Mike Harding was saying that there is a 5CD collection of Sandy Denny out, which he appears to rate highly- I always loved her voice. |
Subject: RE: Liege & Lief From: Paul from Hull Date: 30 Oct 04 - 05:18 PM Fogie, As was said on another thread, 'A Box Full of Treasures'.... I was informed that HMV had it with £10 off, so hotfooted it there today... Turned out it was down from £50 to £40, but I bought it anyway, though could ill-afford to do! |
