FRAULEIN
Recorded by Bobby Helms
Written by Lawton Williams

[A] Far across deep blue waters, lives an [D] old German's daughter
By the [E] banks of the [E7] old river [A] Rhine
Where I loved her and left her, but [D] I can't forget her
I [E] miss my [E7] pretty Frau- [A] -lein.

Chorus
[A] FrauIein, Fraulein, look [D]up toward the Heaven
Each [E] night when the stars [E7] start to [A]shine
By the same stars above you, I [D] swear that I love you
[E] You are my [E7] pretty frau- [A]- lein.

When my memories wander, away over yonder
To the sweetheart that I left behind
In a moment of glory, a face comes before me
The face of my pretty fraulein. .... Chorus

Fraulein, Fraulein, walk down by the river
Pretend that your hand's holdin' mine
By the same stars above you, I swear that I love you
You are my pretty fraulein. ..... Chorus

It's probably Kitty Wells' "I'll Always Be Your Fraulein." The audio recording is at The Record Lady's All-Time Country Favorites (Click on "Real Country Page 14"). The tune is the same as Bobby Helms' "Fraulein," which is also at "Real Country Archives Page 4."

From here.

I'LL ALWAYS BE YOUR FRAULEIN

I'm that old German's daughter
Far across deep, blue water
I still live by the old river Rhine
Where you loved me and told me
That you loved me only
You called me your pretty fraulein

(Chorus:)
If there's a doubt in your mind
I'm still your fraulein
And each night as the moon starts to shine
Where you once held my hand
I go there and stand
I'll always be your fraulein

As the stars shine above me
They tell me a story
Of our love that was so divine
As we walked by the river
The two of us together
You called me your pretty fraulein

(Repeat chorus)

Just a couple of pedantic comments, and then I'll shut up (for the moment):

First, there's no "h" in "fraulein".

Second: Despite the English pronunciation of the combination of "a" and "u", and despite the usual rendition in this and another song featuring the word "fraulein", the word is not "frowlein" nor yet "frawlein", but "froylein".

Pronounced correctly only if you're speaking German David - in the English country version it is frawlein. Bout the only song I know anymore - :-)

Happy B-day BTW David - what are you now? 39?????

Reading the lyrics I get the impression that this is just the song we had sung to us by Chris Howland in a German with a deliberately thick American accent:

Fraulein (German lyrics)

This song was for some time not played in German radio for obscenity (the German lyrics are just as decent as the English). Looking at it from today, the only obscenity in that song was how Howland pronounced the word 'Fraulein'.

for the record, here are the lyrics Wolfgang linked to.
-Joe Offer-

Fräulein
(as sung by Chris Howland)

Hey Fräulein,
Hey Fräulein.

Nicht nur Wein und die Trauben,
Und das könnt Ihr mir glauben,
Liebt ein jeder am Altvater Rhein.
Jimmy Brown aus Dakota
Und aus Minnesota
Schwärmt nur von einem Fräulein.

Fräulein, Fräulein,
Siehst nachts Du die Sterne,
Dann bin in Gedanken ich Dein.
Und der Glanz dieser Sterne
Grüßt Dich aus der Ferne.
Ich lieb Dich Kleines Fräulein.

Alle Männer auf Erden
Hoffen glücklich zu werden,
Denn der Mensch ist nicht gerne allein.
Du bist treu und bist fleißig,
Küsst herrlich - das weiß ich.
Kleines Fräulein von Isar und Rhein.

Fräulein, Fräulein,
Siehst nachts Du die Sterne
Dann bin in Gedanken ich Dein.
Und der Glanz dieser Sterne
Grüßt Dich aus der Ferne.
Ich lieb Dich Du kleines Fräulein.

Fräulein, Hallo Fräulein.
