He's going to have to sing very loudly to be heard all the way from Cornwall. If you gave him the money for the bus fare, you could hear him much more clearly (do buses go to Ampthill?).

On a more serious note (Dm), bound to be a good night. If it wasn't for the fact that it's the same night as Uxbridge, and too bloody far, I would come.

Regards - Pete

Jon left Cornwall this morning and will be up with Cllr sometime early evening today (Monday). He has been singing very loudly but decided that, even with a megaphone, he couldn't be heard in the back of the room at Ampthill - front of the room was no problem, so he's gone there instead of singing in Cornwall and projecting his voice!!! He won't be around on Friday as he has a family funeral to go to in Hampshire.

He has a wonderful new song called 'Lesser Parts of England' that made me cry when he sang it at the Baring Gould Festival this weekend. Look after him for me.

You might not have heard him in Boscastle as we only drive over occasionally. You have probably heard him at festivals as he tends to do more of those than anything else. He also sings with Cornwall Songwriters, so if you saw Cry of Tin or Unsung Heroes you would have seen him then. Now we have moved we will be going to the Linkinhorne and Upton Cross sessions and probably the Sterts sessions too. You might have been to the Fox and Hounds Weekend, the Baring Gould Festival, the Wadebridge Festivals or the Voice Tour in Falmouth. I think we might have met outside the Golden Lion on May Day too.

If he likes to send me a cd then I'll pass it to Herga, Uxbridge, Staines, Waltham Abbey, Bishop'e Sortford and Redbourn, not that the latter do me any favours and Chesham s anono.

Have a gud night

Mr Breeze - Allow me to in form you that MOST of the good clubs this side of London are fully aware of the talents of Mr Heslop ,and most of them have also had him perform his excellent songs at them .

Contrary to what YOU seem to believe , there IS life outside Snorbans !!!

Breezy - where have you been?

Jon and Cats (Kathy Wallis)have both performed at Uxbridge, and indeed were the guests for one of the Yuletide parties.

Jon also wrote Candles (which I'm sure you've heard me sing, and which provided the Silver Harvest title for the Cornish Songwriters cassette), and The Last Fisherman.

There's no way I'll get to Ampthill tonight, but have a good time (see Jon and Kathy in Feb at MBS reunion, hopefully?)

Kitty

I'll tell you what he can offer that Bryant, Truscott and O'Connor can't - Cheap Boats, Last Fisherman, Candles, Life Boat Prayer, I'll take you Dancing Again, Old Soldiers, Ordinary Sorts of Men, Mackerel Drivers, Old Lady of Padstow, May Day Mayday, Lost, Like a Sailor to the Sea, The Last Time, Multitude's Shadow, Before the Sea Calls, the Lost Gardeners of Heligan, Stones, Coasts of Cornwall, Lament for the Oaks, Flowers etc etc. Johnny Collins, sings Cheap Boats and Jim Magean has some ready to learn too. And, if you look at the credits on Truscotts CD you will find the names Heslop and Wallis doing the vocals and harmonies and if you look on any Mabsant CD you will find Heslop in the credits. I could go on but it's too much like name dropping. In fact if you go into any singaround it's a good bet that you will hear a Heslop song - even to the extent that he was told that he shouldn't be singing locals songs in one pub in Wadebridge except it was his own song that they said had been theirs for years and years. You'll also find on some song lists his songs down as Trad!

We would love to send you a CD but we, honestly, have none! The last 4 are all total sell outs and at the moment we are concentrating on Unsung Heroes rather than making a new CD.

Next time you are in Cornwall come and hear him and you'll hear just what is so special..there again I'm biased!!!

Well said Cats !! And I still like the story about when Jon sang 'Candles' and was told by a Lady Singer of 'Some Repute' that he shouldnt be singing 'Wimmins' songs . Jon simply said 'That song was written by a MAN' and walked away . The lady singer was rather more than slightly mortified when it was pointed out to her that HE had written the song !

Yes I must as i dont like not knowing whose who.

Dont know any of the titles, cant say I've heard any of the songs.

Isnt 'Unsung Heroes' a GeorgePapavgeris 4th album title? or was that 'Ordinary Heroes'

Kitty, I dont recall having heard you sing one of them so next time please.

Maybe Leady will sing one or 2 on Monday ,but I bet he'll cry off.

Does Jon know Les Sullivan then?

Meet me on the Harbour in Padstow sometime and we'll have a song swap, I was out there last week. 2nd May 05 if not sooner.

were you at the ringers this year?

graeme knight knows Jon- ask him about when he had his head shaved!
I cant believe you havn't heard Johny Collins sing cheap boats, Yes Jon does know Les through Uxbridge and herga and dodg days and well as you can see a lot of people know who Heslop is , and I did introduce you to Jon and Cats once at 11.Oclock outside the golden lion v briefy and the second time when we were eating Pasties at quayside on Mayday when you were telling me about your family connections with Padstow.

Jon is also one of the cornish song writers who did " cry if tin" which I'm sure you know (it you tony et al) and unsung heroes is about the lost gardens of hellgan. I have introduced jon to robb johnson -Who incidentally is playing at bedford FC on thursday. (thread creep)

I accept you don't remember any of this , Breezy and I hope you make time to listen to other about jon's incredible talents yes I have the CD;s which I might let you borrow as long as I get them back!!

Calennig have recorded a Jon Heslop song, too - Old Soldiers, on our CD Snowy Days Of January. The South Wales songwriting scene hasn't been the same since you left, John!

(Oh - apart from Jeff Hankins. Jeff's a marvellous songwriter - we feel very priveledged at Llantrisant Folk Club because Jeff keeps sharing his work with us.)

John and Kathy: have you got an email address? Thanks.

I think Cry of Tin went into our club raffle.

Not heard Cheap Boats from JC in the last 2 years.

Graeme needs another hair cut before his cd launch March 4th 2005 in St Albans, hope you'll put it in your diary , with J C , and George Papa also featuring.

Breezy dear, do you remember 'Poor murdered Men', Zany used to sing it at St Albans & other clubs. Well, that's one of Jon's. I've been planning to try to sing that one & also 'Candles'. Am certain that your memory is better than you're suggesting!!!

Breezy,
It may be a little known fact, but it is a fact, that I too am one of the Cornwall Songwriters - and you know me! (I know I am one of the newer members but I have been with them for 3 years now!) Ron Openshaw from the Lizard is also a member, as is Ann Phillips of St Austell - also fine singer songwriters.
Jon is a great singer/songwriter and if you dont know of him and have never heard him you've been at the wrong places!
Cheers, Lucy

Of course I know you Lucy.
I have Thorny Roses gigged up here in Jan.
Now how did that happen?
Its just that singers from your neck of the woods hardly get beyond Bristol.
And very little happens round Wadebridge during the year, everything seems to stop at Bodmin, or Wotter to be exact, although there may be the odd session but its usually musicians.

Which just goes to prove, Breezy, that you really have very little idea of is going on down here! Cornwall is alive and well and there are some superb singers around who frequently get past Bodmin - we live the English side of Bodmin for a start. They frequently get past Bristol too. It's such a shame that your knowledge of geography has turned out to be so poor :-) Why is it that so many people think that Cornwall starts the other side of Bodmin Moor and not this side of the Tamar?

If you are around this weekend Cornwall Songwriters - including Hawker, cats, O'Connor, Truscott, Bryant, Ron Openshaw and - yes, you've guessed it - Jon Heslop - are playing at Falmouth Arts Centre. Come and join in with the songs and learn a bit more about Cornish history at the same time. I might even buy you a pint if you are nice to me!!!

I am always this side of Bodmin moor.

Have a good whatever at Falmouth

As you will have gathered I have an evening with Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman tomorrow and I'm allowing Ross Scrivener loose at the Sptlight on Sunday.

but I have to find a window to pop down to pick up a car in Wadebridge in the very near future so who knows.

are thorns and Roses amongst the fine singers you are thinking of?

because

Larry Macs retired and Mervyn Vincent passed on long ago God Bless him
and as for Vic Legg he aint got a passport.

Cant think of any others apart from the Boscastle busker.

I dont count Ralph Mac nor Noel Mercy cos theys immigrants

I believe Marilyn Middleton is looking to move to between Bodders and Truro, now that'll not be bad.

Now there was a good singer at the Trewarmett Lodge last time I was down.
