Subject: RE: Sheet music for El Preso Numero Nueve? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 18 Nov 04 - 12:59 PM Joe, there are errors in the DT. The lyrics in the "Young Folk Song Book" that you posted are more correct. (I won't say perfect, but a Mexican friend of mine OK'ed them) |

Just go to www.bookfinder.com (click) and search for young folk song book. It'll come right up. Yes, it has sheet music - the arrangement is 6 pages long. If you have trouble, send me an e-mail. -Joe Offer- joe@mudcat.org |
Subject: RE: Sheet music for El Preso Numero Nueve? From: GUEST,sandynewlap Date: 05 Nov 04 - 08:39 AM I've been really pleased with all the response to my search for this music! I already had the words; they are actually on the liner notes from a Joan Baez CD that I've got, and since she doesn't sing the exact same words as are on the liner notes, I've compared those with words on various websites. Is there sheet music in the Young Folk Song Book? I'm hoping so! I tried clicking the link that Joe put in for the book, but I always get an error message. I really appreciate everyone's help on this! Thanks, Sandy |

Subject: DT Correction: El Preso Numero Nueve From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Nov 04 - 01:32 AM Here's the version I found in the songbook. My Spanish isn't good enough to say whether it's more correct than the one in the DT and the ones in the other thread. -Joe Offer- El Preso Número Nueve (Hermanos Cantoral) (English Translation by John Cooke) 1. They are hearing the confession of the ninth prisoner. He is praying in the cell with the prison priest, Because, before the dawn, they are going to take his life Because he killed an unfaithful friend and his wife. In his confession he says, "Yes, Father, I killed them, And if I am born again, I will kill them again. Father, I do not repent, nor am I afraid of eternity. I know there is God up in heaven and that He will judge us. I am going to follow their footsteps into the hereafter." 2. The ninth prisoner was a real man. The night of his downfall, he went contentedly to his hut, But when he saw his love in the arms of his rival, Rancor arose in his breast and he was unable to control himself. When the bell sounded, the firing squad was formed; And from the direction of the low wall, they heard the prisoner say: "Father, I do not repent, nor am I afraid of eternity. I know there is God up in heaven and that He will judge us. I am going to follow their footsteps into the hereafter." from Young Folk Song Book, Simon & Schuster, 1963 In the Baez recording, the [Ya] in brackets is omitted in the first chorus. Click to play |

Subject: RE: Sheet music for El Preso Numero Nueve? From: Joe Offer Date: 04 Nov 04 - 01:07 PM Hi, Sandy- I found it in a book called Young Folk Song Book, a Fireside book published by Simon & Schuster in 1963. It doesn't have any background information, but it does have a musical arrangement by Earl Robinson. Contact me by e-mail and we'll work out some way for you to get it. We still could use more information on this song. Anybody know anything about its background? Here's what Baez says about it in her Rare, Live & Classic box set:

Subject: RE: Sheet music for El Preso Numero Nueve? From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 04 Nov 04 - 12:30 PM I searched a couple of large sheet music sites as well, without luck. It is also not in "The Joan Baez Songbook," which has music for a lot of her songs. |

Subject: Sheet music for El Preso Numero Nueve? From: GUEST,sandynewlap Date: 03 Nov 04 - 02:35 PM Does anyone know if sheet music for the 20th century son huasteco song, "El Preso Numero Nueve" ("The Ninth Prisoner") exists? Joan Baez recorded in the 60's. I've done some searching for sheet music with no success, including in Joan Baez songbooks and on mudcat. (I found the mudcat thread with lyrics, but no mention of sheet music). My daughter would use this song in the Bland Music Scholarship competition if I can ever find any sheet music (the Lions Club, who sponsors the scholarship, requires sheet music in order to compete, which makes it hard for a performer of traditional music)! |
