Subject: Origins: Tony Jo White From: GUEST,Seth in Olytown Date: 08 Nov 04 - 10:07 AM Is Tony Joe White, the writer of " Polk Salad Annie" and " Ivar Lee and Roosevelt" still alive and /or kicking? He made 1/2 of a great LP in the sixties that I treasure, but can't find his name, discography places I look. Not listed in Goldmine's compendium of everything on vinyl, but since Elvis recorded "Polk Salad", he must be famous to someone. Thinking about this stuff wakes me up at 4:30 a.m. seth |
Subject: RE: Origins: Tony Jo White From: GUEST,Arkie Date: 08 Nov 04 - 10:22 AM Tony Joe is alive and kicking and has a new CD called "The Heroines" on the Sanctuary label. It has received some good reviews and was at the #9 position on last weeks Americana Chart. He is a fine song writer and guitarist. "Rainy Night In Georgia" is another of his songs that is well known. The new recording features duets with an assortment of lady singers, hence the name, such as Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, Jessi Colter, daughter Michelle and others. |

Subject: RE: Origins: Tony Jo White From: The Beast of Farlington Date: 08 Nov 04 - 10:30 AM I bought 'The Heroines' based on several good reviews I read. I have to say that after a couple of listens I am disappointed. There is some real talent on the album but the songs just aren't strong enough and sound like pale retreads of his earlier 'Lake Placid Blues' album which was a peach. |
Subject: RE: Origins: Tony Jo White From: GUEST Date: 10 Nov 04 - 06:52 PM I remember a Tony Joe White who did a single with "Groupie Girl" on one side (I think the "A" side) and "The High Sherriff of Calhoun Parish" on the other; I think it belonged to a friend and this was probably in the mid or late 1960s. For anyone interested enough I can bore you to death with some of the words *. I suspect he was pretty mainstream as my friend wasn't especially adventurous in his musical tastes (or perhaps this was a bit of cultural snobbery on my part). * = Oh well, since you insist: Chorus of Groupie Girl was something like "Groupie Girl, you know you do your thing so fine But Groupie Girl, you get old before your time" 1st verse of High Sherriff of Calhoun Parish It was said by the Sherriff of Calhoun Parish Not to ever touch his daughter Annalee For to look at her with a lustful eye was certain To get you time in the Penitentiary The next verse starts with: It was true she was quite voluptous It was true she had eyes for me Anyone remember anything else? |
