My grandfather wore a hat every day and I can't recall ever seeing him without one. I always thought it was a rather odd especially during the summer. When young I never wore a hat and spent a great deal of time in the sun. During the past couple of years I've had a dermatologists filet my nose and more recently (about two weeks ago) a chunk of my ear.

I have recently begun to appreciate my grandfathers wisdom. Whenever I'm outside I wear a hat, long sleeve shirts, and if possible gloves.

My favorite hat is the Tilley as they are especially good for sailing. Besides withstanding the elephant test they also float, have straps to keep them on your head when the wind is up, and they have a life time warranty. A bit pricey but well worth the money.

I have a large collection of headgear ranging from campaign hats, to fedoras, hamburgs, straws, caps, a deerstalker, a Filson cold weather wool and oiled canvas, watch caps, the list could go on and on. I think it was John Barrymore who said that, "A hat is something you wear so you can tip it to a lady." Just remember what Utah Phillips told me, "Never wear a hat that has more character than you do!"

one of the worst things about wearing a cowboy hat in a country and western band is that some bastard always gets up and grabs it and dances round wearing it,at the end of the night when evrybody's drunk. Old lady's are buggers for this. So in the end I stopped wearing one. Sometimes they fall down exhausted after all that dancing, and you have to get the hat back without looking as though you are molesting them.

One night I was doing a gig in a rough pub in Nottingham and a tramp grabbed it. He looked as though he was jumping with fleas so I didn't really fancy taking it back. Not even for the journey home in the car.

So my advice is don't get that bowler. Its alright for Acker Bilk - he does posh gigs. Wait til you have written Stranger on the Shore or something like that - and then your audience won't be drunken hat-stealing maniacs.

If I had a fantasy hat - it would be that hat Robert Duvall had in Apocalypse Now - a big Cavalry hat. Is there a special name for one of those hats. However last time I looked on the net they were very expensive - and I'm not sure one would suit me - as I have a fat face, unlike Robert Duval's cadaverous lean look.

I wanted to adopt a derby/bowler/trilby to wear as part of my performing getup, but alas, my head is LONG, and I never have been able to find one that didn't balance on the points of my head and rock from side to side. This is a problem I have with a number of hats, but it's particularly relevant with this style.

My pic on here has my old hat. I bought it from a state trooper that didn't like it because the brim was too wide and I have had it since 1998. It began life as a Fedora and was recently describes as a "go to hell hat"

I wear a hat that probably, when it was a lot younger, looked a lot like Clinton's.

I've been looking for a good replacement for about 11 years with no success. This one's a Stetson "Gun Club" which I'm told is a discontinued model. A previous one was a "local brand" so inferior (but not cheaper) it only lasted a little less than a year. (And from the photo you can tell I'm not too fussy.) The one before that was a Stetson "Indiana Jones" which is also apparently a discontinued model.

In my local area, which includes about 3 states, it seems that only "plastic cowboys" are supposed to wear hats. The few things available other than the wide brimmed big bowl "imitation western" styles are cheap novelty stuff - buy it for a halloween costume and throw it away immediately after. With diligence, one may find a "real cowboy" hat; but even that takes some careful looking.

Even with my "Indiana Jones" model, nobody mistook me for "Indiana." I have had several people rush up with their autograph books out because they thought I was "Willie." They obviously didn't really know what Willie looks like, although I don't really mind the comparison.

I'm of the opposite persuasion personally, and have a representation of one permanently attached to my face for nostalgic reasons. I wear a flat cap in the winter to protect the follically challenged area, the only downfall being that with no brim water gets down the neckhole. I should get something with a brim but i'm afraid I'd lose it in the wind (space for wind jokes                      ).

Can't understand Mooh wearing a hat for warmth and then saying it's cool?

I have and at times enjoy wearing a thing called a Tilley hat.

It's a sort of floppy cloth hat, with tightenable cords for the back of the head or chin.

I call it my "elephant hat". Why?

Because there was a true incident of an elephant keeper in a zoo. He reported that when feeding the elephants or mucking out the elephant barn an elephant ate his hat. So the keeper just waited, and in about a day he had his hat back, along with other things the elephant didn't need. He washed it, and it was (using his words) "as good as new". He wore it in the elephant barn and it was eaten again! A day or so later he reclaimed it, washed it, and wore it in his duties. It was eaten and reclaimed a third time, and still servceable, according to the last report I had.

Sounds sort of like a song challenge, doesn't it?

Riding a motorbike in a hilly city, I find a baseball cap to be better protection from glare than sun glasses. The rest of the time I wear a beret to hide the fact that I'm not going bald. BTW, can any one tell me where to find regular French berets on line? All I can find is the Basque type.

I wear hats, indeed. Or should that be Wear Hats. Miss Manners says it is never impolite for a lady to wear a hat if she so wishes, which leads me to wonder, what are the situations in which no lady would wish to wear a hat?
I look best in hats with wide brims, but oddly enough, when I had to have my hair cut short when the twins were babies, I looked terrible in hats until my hair grew back. I have several berets, several fedoras, an Indiana Jones hat, a genuine Australian walk-about hat, several straw wide ones for summer, I had a hat with a veil but it got eaten by something, and a few water-type boating ones (once I bought a boat hat while touristing in North Carolina, which promptly blew off in the wind while I was boating, leading me to wonder if it would be fished out of the water and sold to the next stupid tourist). Now my water hats have those little thingies that go under the chin and hold them on in the wind.
At my dreaded and disliked grandmother's memorial service I found out she had Worn Hats too - wish I'd known that while she was still alive, maybe I wouldn't have disliked her quite so much (probably not but still, I was sorry to find that out only then).

Incidently while I've often had a beaver on my face, I've usually been laying down at the time. Walking around with one on my head would be a bit of a strain - assuming it was still attached to it's owner.

Now I'm becoming follically challenged I tend to wear a hat. I have a couple of tweed flat caps I usually wear outdoors or a white cotton one in the Summer. In Greece I wear that or a wide brimmed Tilley hat. In the garden and doing odd jobs I wear a paint-stained blue trawler cap. I also have a brimemd waxed cotton hat for very wet walks. I may be turning into my grandad who always wore a hat (cap or trilby) outdoors and indoors always wore a white cotton cap.
I don't wear a hat while driving!

I have more hats than fingers & toes. Likely more hats than brains. That's *hats*, as in "with a brim," preferably broad, to keep the weather off. Them little city hats with one-inch brims they wear to dash across the sidewalk from the car to the door are as pathetic and useless as toy poodles.

Baseball caps are not hats. Especially when worn backwards. Neither are knit caps.

A real hat is a functional garment that will keep the sun out of your eyes, and the wind and sleet out of your ears. And it will turn when you turn your head, unlike a hood.

And a hat is almost as good as a mask for changing your appearance and state of mind.

I love hats, and have an oldfashioned hat rack full of them, braided paper ones from China, straw hats for summer, decorated with feathers, cloches for windy weather (I have a french friend who calls the local cheapo mexican fast food restaurant Taco Cloche), a broad-brimmed black straw, very snazzy, for special occasions. I have a little black felt hat I bought for $6 that a fashion friend said is exactly like one she saw Madonna wearing a few years ago. I bet she didn't get hers at K-Mart.

Nice hats, Clinton! I am also a "hat guy." My main hat is an oilcloth explorer-style hat--not quite a cowboy hat. (Lots of times kids will call out "yo, Indiana Jones" when I go by. I'm not sure why, but this seems to be a "black thing.") I also have a straw stetson summer cowboy-style hat, a suede South African bush hat, and several others. I even have a weird purple jester-style hat that a friend of mine knitted. No bowlers or top hats, though!

A hat, for me, would be another thing to worry about losing. My two usual outdoor garments (a shell & a parka) have hoods for use when needed.

I do wish, tho, that someone would design a hood that was not rigidly attached at the neck so that it limits your peripheral vision. A pleated neck that would allow the hood proper to turn with my head would improve my life.

For the rare occasions when I want to be dressed respectably, I wear a sort of stocking cap with my overcoat. Then I have to pay attention to that & my gloves. But it's only once a year or so.

I'm partial to crushers. I have a black one, a brown one, and a dark green one. I also have a variety of non-crushers, ranging from a so-called New Zealand "Clancy" I wear for fishing and such to a camo boonie job. There are also a couple of woolen caps (with earflaps) for winter, a heavy-duty rabbit-fur trooper hat (for really cold weather), assorted stocking caps, and a load of baseball caps.

The last all promote things *I* want promoted, such as the Aliuts, Goex Black Powder, Craters of the Moon National Monument, etc. I also have one with nothing on the front at all -- it's my non-commital cap.

Not in Ottawa, at least not in winter. The world's most riotous selection of headgear is on parade in Ottawa, especially in January. When it's 20 below with an unthinkable wind chill you can get away with wearing pretty well anything on your head -- try a whole beaver! -- especially if it covers your ears.
