Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Song about not liking work (Going Nowhere
From: GUEST,artisan@artisan-harmony.com
Date: 01 Dec 04 - 05:07 PM

No, sorry, Going Nowhere is not included in the 'Waxing Lyrical' book. Though the CD it is on (Driving Home) _is_ theoretically out of stock, we do have proper printed paper parts and can make CD ROM copies to order. If anyone is interested, you are welcome to contact me direct

Also, please feel free to email me for any Brian Bedford song words not posted to the Digital Tradition. I'll send you copies of anything I have on file.

I don't generally stop into this forum - except I was checking on a traditional song, so please e-mail me direct for any info on Artisan or Brian Bedford.

Cheers

Jacey Bedford

Subject: Lyr Add: GOING NOWHERE (Brian Bedford)
From: GUEST,ClaireBear
Date: 16 Nov 04 - 10:18 AM

H'lo all,

Sorry it took me so long -- there was no lyrics sheet so had to transcribe, then get it here, etc.... Anyway, here are the words at last:

GOING NOWHERE

By BRIAN BEDFORD

Chorus: Going nowhere, nowhere at all,
Walking a treadmill and I've lost control
Seems there's just one direction and it's all uphill.
Though I keep on walking I'm just standing still.

Morning has broken, smashed its way into my bed.
There's a resurrected body lying moaning in my bed
And I need intensive care before I face another day
But it's time to hit the treadmill and I'll soon be on my way

And I am ... (chorus)

I keep searching for directions or a light to guide me on
But my mind is full of mirrors showing only what is gone.
All my futures are behind me -- that's the future I must face
As I step onto the treadmill and I run the treadmill race.

And I am ... (chorus)

And I don't know if I'm winning though I know I'm running fast
On a carousel that's spinning I just watch the world fly past.
And the exits are all bolted; someone's thrown away the key,
And the treadmill's started turning but I'll soon be on my knee.

And I am ... (chorus)

So just follow my example, keep on running with the pack
And when you hit that treadmill, there'll be no turning back.
Keep your nose glued to the grindstone; earn your pay 'cause nothing's free
And you can walk the treadmill, and you can be like me.

And you'll be ... (chorus)

Yes I am ... (chorus again)

Subject: Lyr Add (partial): GOING NOWHERE (Brian Bedford)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 13 Nov 04 - 08:55 AM

I found a sound sample at a-cappella.com:

GOING NOWHERE
Brian Bedford (a member of Artisan)

...lying moaning in my bed
And I need intensive care before I face another day
And it's time to hit the treadmill and I'll soon be on my way
And I am going nowhere, nowhere at all
Walking a treadmill and I've lost control
It seems there's one direction and it's all uphill
Though I keep on walking, I'm just....

[As recorded by Artisan on "Driving Home," Bedspring Music, BOING 8905, originally released as an LP in 1989, reissued as a CD and now out of stock.

[There is a book of Brian Bedford's lyrics and poems called Waxing Lyrical, but it doesn't say whether GOING NOWHERE is included.]

Now I understand...sorry for diverting the thread from its original purpose!

I also immediately thought of MS Word... thought the thread might concern a request for Les Barker's poignantly hilarious paean to MS frustration, "Reinstalling Windows". (It's sung to the tune of "When I'm Washing Windows", which will not be familiar to most Americans.)

Protest noted and accepted; you did explain. AND you volunteered to provide Zany Mouse's answer. So everything is settled.

Among the possible interpretations of "word" as a possible typo, besides "Word (MS)" and "work" -- which it really was -- is (as I mentioned earlier) "world."

Does it say something about ME that I thought the song might have been "about not liking [the] world"? (See current BS thread in "Has the world ended already?" or words to that effect.)

Thanks, Claire, no hurry as I'm always slow about learning words to new songs - something to do with great age I think!

Believe it or not, I hadn't yet read Zany Mouse's explanation of the name change when I last posted. How nuts is that? It WAS a typo, all along -- and even one of the ones I suspected!

PoppaGator, I protest: I did answer the question, actually.

Zany Mouse, I'll try to post those lyrics for you tomorrow, assuming I have a few minutes of calm (as I do today). Unfortunately they're at home so I can't post them now.

When one spends all day lowercasing and uppercasing various terms because other folks got 'em wrong, one tends not to assume that the capitalization one is seeing is meaningful (read: correct).

It plays havoc with one's reading skills: each word suddenly gains a huge list of possible spellings and interpretations. Where most folks just see the word "word," I wonder if the writer could have meant "Word" or "words," spelled "work" wrong, or was cut off before completing "wardrobes" AND spelled it wrong. And I could go on... See what I mean?

Well, at any rate, I hope the original poster can find this thread again when he decides to check in, since I was able to answer the question!

So sorry that the thread got "highjacked" into a discussion of *very* peripheal matters, oh Zany one!

And you STILL haven't gotten even a partial answer to your question!

Now, if you were asking about "YOU AIN'T Goin' Nowhere," I could help... but as it is, I can't.

I'd better explain about the title!

Originally I entitled it "Song about not liking work" which how I remember the song. I realised I mistyped the title and when I went back to correct it I decided to change it to "Going Nowhere". Only someone like Joe could tell me why it changed on the posting and not on the thread title.

Thanks for the information and if you could post the words I'd be very grateful, Claire. It's a great song incidentally.

Rhiannon

I was mystified myself until I saw this message of yours Rhiannon. You set the thread title at the beginning of the thread creation process. You changed the initial message title in the process of submitting the first message. When you get to that point, you can't change the thread title unless you abort the whole process, go back to Forum Home, do not collect $200, and start again.
So, OK, is that clear now? do you want me to rename the thread at this point, or just keep people wondering?
    -Joe Offer-

Third time was apparently the charm, as they say -- your message got posted, and just the once.

My questions were addressed not only to you, ClaireBear, but to "whomever," i.e.., to all readers, hopefully including the site admin or whoever went to the trouble to change the thread title.

By the way, I was actually a little surprised to learn that you, too, were actually thinking about *that* particular "Word." I figured that, likely as not, I could have been the first/only one to think first about that hated hunk of WP software in this context. (It was spelled with a lowercase "w," after all.)

Darned if I know how the thread name got changed, PoppaGator. I'm afraid that I didn't actually notice the name change because it was already called "Song about not liking word" when I clicked on it the first time. I should have understood Greg Stephens' post, but somehow it didn't sink in.

You see, because I first came to the thread expecting to read how someone besides me was frustrated with Word, the leap from there to the lyrics to "Going Nowhere" -- a song that I know quite well that IS about the kind of frustrations I feel every day -- was not really such a stretch. Coming at it from the other direction, though, I don't see it either.

And speaking of mysteries, now I don't seem to be able to post to this thread. This is my third try. Apologies if (eventuall) this shows up as triple posting!

Claire

OK, CB, I *think* I see -- I see how you (and I, as well) don't like MS Word.

But (a) what's it got to do with this song, and (b) who changed the thread title and why?

Microsoft Word was certainly what I had in mind -- but then I edit technical materials for a living and have to use Word all day. This always makes me suspect I'm "going nowhere, nowhere at all," often gives me a distinct feeling of having "lost control," and not infrequently makes me aware there's "only one direction and it's all uphill..."

Just try working in revision marking mode for about ten hours a day (and then having your clients mark it all back to the way it was before) and you'll see what I mean.

ClaireBear, please enlighten; how/why does it make sense?

What word does somebody not like? Microsoft Word?

Not liking "world" might make a bit more sense to me, but not much.

The song is from Artisan, on a CD called "Driving Home, which is listed as out of stock on Artisan's Web site (of which here is the recordings page). Member Brian Bedford wrote the song.

I have the CD at home and believe it has a lyrics sheet, so keep us posted if you want them.

Can anyone identify a song that has been running through my mind a lot recently. I THINK it might be called Going Nowhere but not sure.

The words that I can remember are:

Going nowhere, nowhere at all
[???] and I've lost control.
Seems there one direction and it's all uphill
[???]

That's the beginning of the song. Any ideas Cats?
