Does anyone know of a site with an extensive collection of Old English/ traditional folk songs to download as MP3's?? I have come across ones with a small 30 odd celtic collection... is there anything else available online yet?

There's a whole album HERE but they're not exactly MP3, they're Ogg Vorbis files which will play on lots of free players like Realplayer and Winamp. The songs are trad English + one Welsh.

And then if you like it you can click on "buy here" and get an uncompressed copy on CD with proper notes on the songs etc. (UK bank/credit card required).

If you put the word download in the Filter box and set the Age drop-down to All and press the Refresh button you'll find several threads with references to sites for downloading folk music. There's recent thread on a paying site you might like to look at: new trad music download site (pay).

the only large source I know of is on Usenet..(newsgroups)... alt.binaries.mp3.folk

you never know what will appear there, but sometimes there are old LPs from the 60s & 70s posted.

thanks so much for your help! this is such a great way to sample a whole heap of new (to me!) groups and singers. Sometimes, you just don't want the whole album. It's great to be able to pick and choose individual tracks....All new tech to us, but most welcome.

Yours truly swaying with delight in the kitchen

With a search on the desired song-title and "MP3" or "WAV" or "midi" will give you what "goog" used to deliver three years ago.

If I was a gambler, unless the big-G digs into their archives to deliver what they have in their cache (but cannot deliver because of legalities on "intellectual property") I would dump a bundle to short the stock.

Then again, they have sold search-devices to the likes of Max at M-Cat....so their profits may be secure for a few more quarters.

Sincerely,

Gargoyle

above site/link carry a wide range of music in MP3 format.

a site we've been using for some time, as a link from our web site - highly recommended to mudcatters who want to spread their music.

well...it seems that almost everything SoundClick features is commercial, singer-songwriter stuff, ESPECIALLY the 'folk' section, which is interesting, except that I note that the original request was for traditional/Old English music.

Shameless plug I know, but there's a couple of mp3s on our band website isambarde.co.uk (click on 'press pack). They're both trad English!
