Subject: RE: BS: Am I a Dinosaur ?? From: Amos Date: 11 Nov 04 - 09:55 PM The iPod, by Apple, can be seen at their web site http://www.apple.com/itunes/and is a small portable device which plays music files in a very delightful way. The player fits in your pocket and can hold thousands of song files on its miniature harddrive. The songs are in a special computer format for digital music called MP3. The file format captures sound at slightly less than CD quality (so the fgiles can be ore compressed) which makes the files more transferable. They sound very satisfactory when played on the iPod and you can sit through long meetings, boring previews, airplane rides or long walks with your skullbones vibrating to your favorite music. My iPod contains 636 music files in 4.8 Gigabytes of space which is about 10% of its capacity. Sitting in my office I can listen to Rick Fielding, Mozart, Kendall Morse, Cara, Andrew Llloyd Webber, Charlie Byrd playing Brazilian, Yo Yo Ma, Brubeck, Tahiitian Island chants, Gordon Bok, etc. And I still have 32 more Gigs to fill. It is a wonderful combination of convenience and utiltity and relatively high fidelity. I love it. Amos |
Subject: RE: BS: Am I a Dinosaur ?? From: Amos Date: 11 Nov 04 - 10:07 PM MP3: A compressed audio format that is popular for downloading across the internet and for use with memory-based audio players. Files may be recorded on CD-R or CD-RW media for playback in compatible DVD players, audio CD players, and CD-ROM drives. Files are usually named as "*.mp3". Sound quality varies as a function of the recording/encoding bit rate. In our opinion, anything recorded with less than 128 kbps data rate will sound degraded. For a high fidelity home audio system, we would recommend MP3s encoded at no less than 256 kbps data rate. Anything less would mean too much compression was used at the cost of sound fidelity. See Windows Media Audio (WMA). timefordvd.com/glossary/GlossaryLtoM.shtml MPEG-1 layer 3 audio encoding, used to compress audio on CD-ROMs and for downloading via the Internet. www.disctronics.co.uk/technology/glossary/glossary_mn.htm A standard technology and format for compressing a sound sequence into a very small file (about one-twelfth the size of the original file) while preserving the original level of sound quality when it is played. MP3 is the most poplular Internet-Audio format and is revolutionizing the music distribution industry by allowing users to download music over the Internet. www.parthusceva.com/news/glossary.html An increasingly popular way to store audio in electronic format. The MP3 format compresses audio files in such a way that the file size is relatively small, but the song sounds nearly perfect. You can identify MP3 files because they end in the ".mp3" extension. Typically 1 MB is equal to one minute of music or several minutes for spoken word/audiobooks. www.ianr.unl.edu/pubs/consumered/nf457.htm |

Subject: RE: BS: Am I a Dinosaur ?? From: sledge Date: 12 Nov 04 - 12:51 AM The only portable digital music device that limits you to a proprietry music format is the new sony player. Not a bright move on their part I feel, look what happened to Betamax. The ipod uses mp3 which you can produce using several types of easily available software and you can also download ready made mp3 tracks directly and legally now from websites such as Apples Itunes at reasonable cost. There are many differnt mp3 players around now, many of them with immense storage capactity. Many of them also support WMA which is the microsoft music format which is supposed to compress files even further with equal quality playback, not used it myself though. I use an ipod mini and it suits me perfectly, 1000 tracks where ever I go. Sledge |

Subject: RE: BS: Am I a Dinosaur ?? From: Gurney Date: 13 Nov 04 - 05:45 AM Been thinking about that myself. Seems to mean, do I transfer my LP records to CD to play them on the CD player, and get two LPs on a CD, or, Do I transfer them onto CD in mp3 and get several LPs on a CD, but can't play them on most CD players, but can play them on a DVD player, (which as yet I haven't got, but they are very cheap, and videos seem to be going out anyway) or Do I buy an Ipod, or Do I buy a big memory stick, and one of those little transmitters that send the signal to the car radio, or Do I stick with what I already have, until it is worn out. Decisions, decisions. Whilst I like using headphones, I insist on using them indoors, and I will not walk about the streets wearing what looks like a head-pacemaker. |

Subject: RE: BS: Am I a Dinosaur ?? From: Amos Date: 13 Jul 05 - 05:57 PM It is called an iPod, not an eye-pod. The prefix "i-" was developed by Apple as a way of labeling its cool design products, starting with the iMac; originally it was supposed to represent "Internet", but has gradually come to mean "Cool Apple-designed Thing". The "Pod" part was chosen partly because it is a small sleek container (like a seed pod is) and partly because "pod" also has a futuristic space-ship sort of ring to it. My eddicated guess. They now hold more than ever, and have color screens, and can hold photos, calendars, addresses, or other computer files as well as just songs. A |
Subject: RE: BS: Am I a Dinosaur ?? From: Gray D Date: 13 Jul 05 - 06:32 PM Erm . . . according to one M. Python, a dinosaur is small at one end, then gets bigger in the middle, and then goes small again at the other end. If you know someone with a full length mirror that they will let you look into then you should be able to judge for yourself. If it turns out that you are too large to get a full view then:- a. your question may already be partially answered b. try standing further away (but not so far that you have to use binocliers as this may prove difficult with foreshortened front arms with claws on them) Hope this helps, Gray D (just spent a couple of hours looking at the fossils down on the seashore . . . the ones in the rocks, not the ones in the deckchairs) |

Subject: RE: BS: Am I a Dinosaur ?? From: s6k Date: 14 Jul 05 - 07:45 AM if you get an MP3 player, dont get an I-Pod, its just not as good as a Creative Zen Touch heres why - ipod holds 20gb of data, and battery lasts for 8 hours. you MUST install i-Tunes on the pc, and the player will only play MP3 or apples own format. ipod mini is the same, but holds 4gb, and the battery lasts 12 hours now then, the creative zen touch holds either 20gb or 40gb, depending on what model you get, will play MP3, WAV, WMA, and the battery lasts for 24 HOURS - plus, the zen is cheaper than the ipod. when i bought my zen, it was £160 (for the 20gb) and £230 for the ipod. i dont suppose prices will have changed much yet. get the creative zen touch |
