Does anyone still have the lyrics for Midnight on the Water, from the Kate Wolf album? Harpgirl posted them long ago, and I cannot find the thread. Thanks!

...well folks...in my weakened condition I had sworn to gargoyle in a private message that I was leaving the Mudcat largely because I couldn't stand the pain that his attacks on some of our women such as katie lafrance, had been causing me...(this had been so painful for me) ...but I have temporarily relented in the interest of sharing song...

Midnight on the Water words by John Croizat

There are times that I am blue
thinking of you and me
At Midnight on the Water
And how it used to be
There are stars among the trees
In some old memories I know
At Midnight on the Water
Not so long ago
Though they're gone like floating dreams
The scenes were there as in a mirror
Made by the moon upon the water
And our love was never stronger
But the picture was broken
by the waves we left behind
At Midnight on the Water
Once upon a time
There are times when I am blue
Thinking of you and me
At Midnight on the Water
And how it used to be
In the stillness of the lake
Where these thoughts take me again
At Midnight on the Water
Do you remember when?
Though they're gone like floating dreams
The scenes were there as in a mirror
Made by the moon upon the water
And our love was never stronger
But the picture was broken
by the waves we left behind

At Midnight on the Water
Once upon a time

such fond memories I have about this song...harpgirl (with a small h)

Salutations, harpgirl! Thank you so much for posting lyrics (again) Have been searching, and just didn't want to get a 20.00 book for 1 tune, that I already play. Really appreciate, and promise not to misspell your name again.

Here's John Hartford playing "Midnight on the Water" on the fiddle:

The tune is a big favourite here, usually played after "Margaret's Waltz" sometimes also combined with Ashokan Farewell. Several people I know (myself included) do an arrangement combining the tune and Ron Kavana's song of the same name: they work well together. The lyrics of Ron's song are on another thread.

As I understand it, this tune is not traditional as such and is still under copyright. Not that I care!

Yeah, the Fiddler's Companion says the tune is "usually credited to Texas fiddler Luke Thomasson."

I'd like to live in a world where songs are shared freely, with no thought of ownership. Trouble is, songwriters have to make a living somehow.

Someone gave me a cassette some years ago with several songs by Ron Kavana on it. I don't have it any more, although it's probably on CD by now. Anyway I think on the tape, Ron combined the old tune with his song of the same name to great effect.
The song tune is similar enough to do exactly what Tattie Bogle says and I have done it for many years now- Ron's excellent words are freely available on his website.

Think that's what the Watersons do too. As for coyright, I'm talking about playing it in sessions, etc. never been paid to play it!
