Hi, John - search for Bert Jansch at http://www.allmusic.com/ - watch the spelling of his name. You'll find a biography and other information.
The All-Music Guide says he was born Nov 3, 1943 in Scotland.

Cheers John,
the song I'm omn about is "Back Home" written by Bert, it includes the lines,
"in the town where I was born, you can stand on High Street and look out to see"
it also mentions heather.

"in the town where I was born, you can stand on High Street and look out to see" it also mentions heather.

jOhn this is a song he wrote about a girl called Heather from Hull.
She lived down High Street and loved to look out to the Humber.

Bert was born on 3 November 1943, as Joe rightly says above, in a place now known as Stobhill Hospital in Glasgow. At the time his parents, Herbert and Margaret, were living at 247 Bernard Street, Glasgow.

If you're interested in Bert, it's a great book.

The name sounds German, because he had Austrian ancestors. Keeep the thread up John, I am sure you will get more erudite replies!

Yes, the name now sounds Austrian to our ears, but I'd bet if he goes back one or two more centuries his ancestors have been spelled Janos (pron: Janosh) and have been coming from what then belonged to the greater Austria and now is called Hungary.

The name came from Hamburg, Germany, when Bert's ancestors Johann-Christian Wilhaelm Jansch and his wife Wilhelmina came to live in Scotland somtime in the late 19th cenrury. The family, including Bert, pronounce it "Janch" as opposed to "Yanch".
