Of course you have. We all are aware that Peter O'Toole is a double phallic name. No problem. But awhile ago I was reading that gawdaswful, sillyass Dainty Davy, Curley Pow thread and encountered something I had NOT considered before. Someone brought up the poet, Emily Dickinson...........

This may well be the ultimate in sexually referenced names as "Dickinson" implies elements of homosexuality, pedophelia, and incest.

Something to consider..............

Spaw

Thanks Spaw, in all my innocence I had never noticed the Peter O'Toole thing. I was too busy sniggering over the unfortunately named Irish TD, Dick Spring.

Once knew a school principal named Gottschalk and at a staff social it brought the house down when I pointed it out to everybody, some of whom had known the guy for years. Also knew a guy named Bob Dick, as in shortened penis.

Back to your regular programming.

My best friend's father is Richard Steele... and yes, he voluntarily goes by the nickname "Dick"... I heard later that the main character in the Naked Gun movies (with Canadian Leslie Neilson) had that as his name....

My teenage boys returnt from Church a few weeks ago in fine form. Seems the supply minister had come to class to introduce himself. The boys seemed spent the rest of class commenting that Rev. Woodcock was a fine upstanding gentleman. At least it wasn't my week to teach....

In the Navy, I once did a stint on limited duty while recouperating from surgery, and was assigned to a base dispensary (sick bay). Their medical record filing system was in a mess. There was an index card on file for every one of the thousands of medical records they kept at the facility. I was tasked with sorting out these cards in alphabetical order. Though it sounds tedious, this job was actually quite amusing because of some of the surnames I came across in the process, like Liddeldich, Glasscock, Horney, Woodcock, Cumming, to list a few.   The Navy uses an abbreviated designator to indicate whether an individual is an officer or enlisted person. These are "OFF" and "ENL", and they appear at the top of these index cards, immediately following the individual's surname. One card turned up which read,

JACK, OFF
Michael P.

Here in Northern Virginia, there is a practicing OB/GYN physician by the name of Dr. Harry Beaver. Honest. Talk about a name fitting one's livelihood.

In elementary school, the surname of one of our classmates was Mycock. Nobody called him by his last name. I also worked with a Bob Dickout once upon a time. We often wondered if he had a flasher in his ancestral line.

I've mentioned this one before but I went to school with a girl named Sharon Peters. I swear we never thought a thing about it until my best friend's Dad cracked up when he heard it and asked, "What's that? Some kind of bathroom game?"

Dense? Yes, I'd love to.....Fox trot or tango?

Spaw, have you considered that the name of this thread "BS: Have you considered................" is witlessly generic, gives no hint of its content, and just invites people to cruise right on by without stopping. If you wuz a hooker you'd be broke. Maybe something like "BS: HEY FUCKFACE! Have you considered this shit?" would be more appropriate.

Anyway, I once knew a girl named Anita Ball. It was true. She'd fuck anyone.

You people thoroughly disgust me! People who have been given unfortunate names by their parents (who were possibly intoxicated at the time and thought it was funny) deserve your compassion, not your ridicule.

Take my own name, for instance: Charles Ulysses Farley. At first glance it appears to be a fairly innocuous name, not one that lends itself to ridicule. In fact, my own parents had no idea they had given me anything but a fine upstanding name. Not being the type to use "nicknames", my parents have always called me "Charles" and would be surprised to learn of the difficulties my name has caused me.

It was when I entered the public school system that the problems with my name became apparent. Throughout elementary school, my classmates called me "Charlie" and seemed to have thought "Charlie Farley" to be one of the funniest rhymes ever concocted. But, things got much worse when I started high school and people began to call me "Chuck". Inevitably, someone discovered that my middle initial was "U" and I got hung with the moniker "Chuck U. Farley". Believe me, it's not pleasant to be walking down a school hallway and have someone yell out, "Hey! Chuck U. Farley!" and then to have some other moron chime in with, "Did he say, 'Fuck you, Charlie?'" Not pleasant in the least.

Yes, Amos, one thing I have learned from the handful of times I have visited this forum is that some of its members were born without the gene that promotes an understanding of irony. And others are just slow on the uptake no matter how the cheese is sliced. So, it is perhaps best to make one's point in increments and "leave no bases untouched" as it were.

I had a bit of a hard time in school on account of my first name, Scott, thanks to Scott Tissue. I was always being called "Snot Rag", "Ass Wipe", etc. Jokingly of course. Remember the old toilet paper commercial jingle? "Scott Tissue - One hundred and thirty feet loo-oong!" I'd walk into a classroom and kids would chime in with that one all the time.

Chief Chaos, that reminds me: about twenty years ago, my wife and I were visiting a friend who lived in Long Beach (CA). He had occasion to go to Riverside one afternoon and we went with him. While we were there, he suggested we go to a restaurant where he said they served the best hamburger in all of California. Excellent hamburger indeed!

The name of the place was "Mother Fuddruckers."
