Is there a problem with the Lyrics & Knowledge search on Mudcat? Don't know if my firewall or something is stopping it working or whether there is a fault on the line. If there is no fault, has anyone any ideas why it wont work?

I use it quite a bit, Barb'ry, and haven't noticed a problem. I do use the Filter more because it's so much faster.
Try this search for Barbary and see if it works:

thanks - but still getting 'web page not responding'. I have windows xp and aol 9 and a mcaffee firewall - think they may be conspiring to stop me using the search!

ah ha! It was McCaffee wot done it! I have to disable my firewall to get the search - any ideas how I can bypass this without turning off the firewall every time I need lyrics?

hi Barb'ry!..long time, no see!

There is usually a way in a firewall to spell out rules to it about what it should and should not block...if you find the menu where the default rules are stored, you might find one that got accidently set to block something on Mudcat. Then you can change it....

I'm getting the same thing. It seems if I retry it a couple of times it will work. I just did a search and retried it 5 times to no avail. So I gave up. Nothing has changed on my firewall. I think it is a real time-out.

The firewall that comes with Windows XP Service Pack 2 seems to be very fussy - but usually it lets you know when it's blocking things. Maybe the change of URL to supersearch.mudcat.org is causing you problems.

Greg, the first message of the FAQ has instructions for using our various search engines, including the Filter. The Filter is the easiest one to use, but it covers only thread titles. Put a pertinent word or phrase from the thread title in the Filter box, and set the age back (the filter is right at the top of the list of threads on the Forum Menu page).

But be aware when using the filter, that you might not find songs in the DT because there are a few printer's errors there. Couldn't find John Kanaka because it is spelled JOHN KANAKAa, and some LORD figures as LOD.

The Filter works only for thread titles. The Alphabetical listing for Digital Tradition tunes works pretty well, if you know the first word of the song title. Once you've brought up a page of the DT title list, find your song by using your browser's "Find" utility [CTRL-F].
When using the "Lyrics & Knowledge Search" (SuperSearch), you can search for a partial word by replacing the unknown part with an asterisk. If you were looking for "How Much Is That Doggie in the Window," the best word to use for thinking is Doggie, because very few people other than Patti Page are dorky enough to use a word like that. Trouble is, did Patti spell it "doggie" or "doggy"? search for dogg* or much is that dogg*, and it should come up (dogg* will give you far better results than dog*).
The asterisks don't work in the filter or the [CTRL-F] utility. They search for exactly what you type, and don't need asterisks.

I've found by now what I had searched for but here is the detail that did slow my search:

entering go for a pair of brown eyes into the search box didn't find the one song in the DT with this line in it (the one I was looking for).

I'm curious. Was that line too long or what was it? Googling that line did find it in the DT mirror but not in Mudcat.

Could it be due to the line break after go? I had no problem just using pair of brown eyes.
