Subject: Sidesaddle...are they good? From: Mudlark Date: 17 Nov 04 - 01:47 AM Sidesaddle will be playing locally Friday night. I'd appreciate comments about them from anyone that's heard them, either live or recorded. I'm not familiar with their music....all I know is that it's bluegrassy. |

Subject: RE: Sidesaddle...are they good? From: open mike Date: 17 Nov 04 - 02:48 AM THEY ARE WONDERFUL! I believe they hail from Santa Cruz area. http://www.sidesaddleandco.com/ their album Daylight Train has some wonderful songs and tunes on it..in case there is some- one out there who is not familiar with their name, it implies a type of saddle for women where they would sit with both legs on teh same side of the horse.. i would think they would just fall off, but i guess not! the new album cover is hilarious...they are all trying to subdue an ornery stand-up bass violin! you will enjoy them, i bet! let us know how it goes, mudlark! |
Subject: RE: Sidesaddle...are they good? From: Joe Offer Date: 17 Nov 04 - 02:57 AM They're very nice people, and they make good music. I suppose you could say this stuff is "bluegrassy," but this is classy bluegrassy. I've heard them a few times, and really enjoy them. They played for a clogging show done in memory of one of my best friends, so I and my wife (my friend's widow) are forever in love with them. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Sidesaddle...are they good? From: katlaughing Date: 17 Nov 04 - 03:18 AM About those saddles...if you scroll down to the photos you'll see they have a saddle "horn" much as astride saddles do, just placed a bit differently...helps a lady keep her seat no matter the ride.**bg** The site has vanished so the link is now revealed through the Wayback Machine. ---mudelf |
Subject: RE: Sidesaddle...are they good? From: Mudlark Date: 18 Nov 04 - 12:59 AM Thanks for the input, everybody....I'm now looking forward to the show Friday night. Will let you know how it goes. (Given the name I was surprised to see they weren't all cowgirls) |
Subject: RE: Sidesaddle...are they good? From: Joe Offer Date: 18 Nov 04 - 01:14 AM They were an all-girl group when I met them, Mudlark - playing for a San Francisco clogging group that was almost all gay men. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Sidesaddle...are they good? From: DADGBE Date: 18 Nov 04 - 01:17 AM Mudlark, you'll have a ball! Say hi to Leanne the fiddler from Ray Frank. Thanks. |
Subject: RE: Sidesaddle...are they good? From: open mike Date: 18 Nov 04 - 02:47 AM and notice that one of them goes by the name of Robbin'Banks...Ha! Jerry Ashford is a wonderful guitar player and teacher...I can see why they let him be in the band even though he is'nt a cowgirl! So, Joe are you saying that your wife was the widow of the guy they did the memorial for? glad you can be there for each other! |
Subject: RE: Sidesaddle...are they good? From: Mudlark Date: 20 Nov 04 - 03:00 AM Thanks again, everyone, for right-on recommendations for this group...a great evening, even for one of the people I took with me who claimed to hate bluegrass. Infectious entertainment and wonderful musicianship....great guitarist and the fiddler, Lianne, is wonderful...and does a very creditable version of I Wanna Be a Dog, with dognose attached. I tried to get close to say hi for you Ray, but didn't have a chance...they were MOBBED at break, sold out one CD, said they are in the process of making 2 more. They have been together for 25 years, and it shows. Very tight group and they seem to be having so much fun. Their audience tonight was noisily appreciative, and they played a good 30 min. longer than most of the musicians do in this venue. A bargain at $15, any way you look at it! |
Subject: RE: Sidesaddle...are they good? From: Bev and Jerry Date: 20 Nov 04 - 03:43 PM Mudlark: Sorry we missed it. After Thanksgiving things will slow down for us and we will get together. Bev and Jerry |
