I have a recording of this song but don't know how to figure out the chords. I would love to know them. The chorus id "I wash my hands, inmuddy water... The verse is " I was born in old, virginia, North Carolina, I did roam." Thanks for any help.

Blake

Here's Stonewall Jackson's version....hope it will fill the bill.

I WASHED MY HANDS IN MUDDY WATER - Recorded by Stonewall Jackson - Written by Joe Babcock

[C] I was born in [G] Macon, Georgia
They kept my dad in the Macon [C] jail
My daddy said, [C7] "Son, keep your [F] hands clean
And [C] you won't hear those [G] blood hounds on your [C] trail."

[C] I washed my hands in [G] muddy water
I washed my hands, but I didn't get [C] clean
I tried to [C7] do like my daddy [F] told me
But, I [C] must have washed my [G] hands in a muddy [C] stream.

Well, I fell in with bad companions
We robbed a man in Tennessee
The sheriff caught me up in Nashville
They locked me up and threw away the key.

I asked the jailer, "When's my time up?"
He said, "Now, son, we won't forget
And if you try and keep your hands clean
Then we may make a good man of you yet."

I couldn't wait and do my sentence
I broke out of the Nashville jail
Now I just crossed the line of Georgia
And I can hear those blood hounds on my trail.

A fragment of a song, (the chorus I assume) that I heard on an old Grateful Dead has caught my interest.

Washed my hands in muddy waters I washed my hands, but they wouldn't come clean I washed my hands in muddy waters Well I must have washed my hands in the muddy stream

This certainly sounds like a traditional song to me, If anyone can fill in the rest of the lyrics and perhaps tell me a little bit about the song I would be forever, (or at least for a few days) greatfull.
