Taj Majal's version:

ou're gonna [E] need somebody on your [E] bond child
You're gonna [A] need somebody on your [E] bond
When it's late 'round midnight and [A] old man death comes slippin
into the room
You're gonna [E] need some[B]body on your [E] bond (A,A#,B turn)

You take Mary and Martha standin up in the hillside
Mary explainin' to Martha, "darlin look at the river deep
and the water wide."
Here comes ole Moses, faithful Moses carryin' big ole stones
up the hill
Tellin everybody their gonna need somebody on their bond

leads--play body of song twice using one instrument (keyboard or
mouthharp) first and add another instrument (guitar or horns)
to accompany instrument #1 during second lead

Whoa, you tak Maivus Staples and ole Corn Cheevers(?) they got the
good side on their bond
Oh I been listen to the music people ever since the day I was born
My momma raised me in a room across from the church by the tree and that
sweet gospel music oh how it used to comfort me
Tellin everybody they're gonna need somebody on their bond

Repeat first verse (1st two lines quietly then build to end by
repeating last line of verse (end with B, A, E)

Thanks for the chords! I am amazed that after some extensive searching - very few Blind Willie Johnson songs are written out. Perhaps it is too hard to decipher - or slide guitar too hard to notate?

Basically Blind Willie is in open D tuning (starting on the 6th string: D A D F# A D ) He uses a bottleneck to play the sung melody
as he sings. Sometimes he sings part of the lyrics and finishes off the vocal phrase instrumentally with the bottleneck. This is nearly all played on the first string right up the neck and back down again. You can also play this melodic line by using the bottleneck on the fifth string. Meanwhlie he picks out a beat on the lower three strings. As it is a bottleneck piece it dosn't exactly follow what I would call European harmonic progression but is an approximation thereof but this is what gives it its essential flavour and as an Afro-American Blind Willie works out of his own tradition and heritage and is thus not answerable to European notions of harmony or scale, or indeed language, grammar and speech patterns. As a female you may find it not so workable to pitch your voice in the key of D so you might have to capo up or tune the whole guitar higher or pitch your voice a whole octave above (!)to find a key that suits. On the Blind Willie recording there are in fact three voices working together to create one beautiful whole: Blind Willies voice, the female voice of Willie B. Smith and Blind Willies (vocalised) guitar lines. It's a while since I've heard this record but the words as far as I can recall are:

You're gonna need somebody on your bond (x 2)
Its way over in the midnight, when death come slipping in your room
You're gonna need somedbody on your bond.

Well if you was a gambler, and nobody would'nt go your bond
Fell on your knees and begin to pray that Jesus could go your bond

I heard the voice of Jesus singing, calling me home to rest
Says on the way if you wanna lie down, lie down on my breast

I came to Jesus, weary, tired foolish and sad
I finally found me a resting place, oh how it made me glad

I hope this helps.

Sorry - I see I've made an error: you can play the melody line with trhe bottleneck on the FOURTH string (tuned to D) not the fifth as I wrote above. Lotsa Luck.
