Subject: Info Req: 'Tis a Gift & Kickin' My Dog From: KAS Date: 23 Nov 04 - 09:15 PM Hi everybody, Ken Schatz here. My good friend Dan asked me if I knew this particular recording, but I'm stumped, and it looks like a perfect Mudcat puzzle. Can anyone identify the album he describes? Thanks! Dan says: ...It is becoming an obsession of mine to identify and track down a tape recording of an album for my youth. It is a seminal influence, but probably the only folk music tape I've ever owned. That said I listend to it repeatedly between the ages of 2 and 16. It was a dub so there was no proper labeling or cover art, but I know you like a challenge. So... any help in identifying names of songs from the following fragements would delay my going mad by at least several weeks. If you recognize a pattern of the songs as cohereing into a whole such as "the infamous "Parker Brothers Family Christmas Album"" that would be a bonus, but probably impossible. Recorded probably between 1971 and 1975. Presumably commercially available due to sound quality. male and female voices. Maybe four or five members. Mouth harp, possible bucket bass, old-school sounding. I imagine in my mind's eye that the participants had beards, but this may only be a flight of youthful fancy. I can hum portions of these if it would be helpful. Clues... 1. (chorus, quaker melody)'Tis a Gift To Be Simple, "Tis a gift to be true. 2. (chorus = "...down by the water a rolling, a rolling.... (some sad song about some lovers meeting and drowning female lead vocal, male chorus)" 3. Three men-a shall mow my meadow...5 men, 4 men, 3 men, 2men and 1 more, shall shear my ewes and rams and lambs and gather it all together...." (presumably based on a psalm or biblical passage) 4. Everytime I go downtown, someone kicks my dog around, makes no difference if he's a hound, they gotta quit kickin' my dog around... Please let me know if any of these strike a bell. I will dig for the original tape once again at my folks but it seems consigned to the bookcase of history.... |

Subject: RE: Info Req: 'Tis a Gift & Kickin' My Dog From: Stewie Date: 24 Nov 04 - 12:07 AM This probably was one of Sandy Paton's Folk Legacy albums. 'Golden Ring' FSI-16 had all the songs you list: 'Simple Gifts', 'Rollin' a-Rollin (Child #10), 'One man shall mow my meadow' and 'The hound dog song'. The performers were Howie Mitchell, George and Gerry Armstrong, Ed Trickett, Ruth Meyer, Win Stracke, Shannon Smith, Steve White and Herb Nudelman. Send a PM to Sandy and he will no doubt answer any of your queries. --Stewie. |

Subject: Golden Ring Recordings From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Nov 04 - 06:16 PM Stewie, I think you ought to win some sort of prize or something. If we did that, you'd always be winning prizes. How about if we confer upon you the official title of "Legenday Mudcatter"? The Golden Ring CD's are my favorite folk recordings. This one is Golden Ring: A Gathering of Friends for Making Music, originally issued as an LP in 1964 and reissued on CD in 1996. Here's the track listing:

Subject: RE: Info Req:Tis a Gift & Kickin' My Dog (Golden R From: katlaughing Date: 26 Nov 04 - 12:08 AM FWIW, over in another thread, Art Thieme just told me the old 78 recording I have of Mac MacClintock doing Jesse James, which I put on CD, is the most complete version he's ever heard. Coming from Art, I'd say "that's saying something." :-) Nice to see a GOOD plug for Sandy and Caroline, too! |

Subject: RE: Info Req:Tis a Gift & Kickin' My Dog (Golden Ring) From: kytrad (Jean Ritchie) Date: 26 Nov 04 - 07:04 PM And you may not know, Sandy my dear, that Gerry & George learned their overall title song/group name from the little game song they learnt from me,'Golden Ring Around the Susan Girl. They were best friends- I used to do much singing around Chicago-always stayed at the Armstrongs,as did almost all other folk travellers. Homey, friendly, with comforting food and endless music, it was for many, many years a resting place for the soul. One of Gerry's ways of teasing me was to visit my Mom in our KY home and "learn" my songs from her- then she'd pull a coup and credit Mom instead of me! We had many good laughs over tricks like that... Jean |

Where else could I so easily join in on a conversation between such fine artists and historians as you all? thanks! em |
