I know about the Lafayette Prebyterian Church, their choir, and their social action programs because I used to live in downtown Brooklyn on State Street bewteen Bond and Nevins. From my bedroom window I could see the clock tower of the Williamsburg Savings Bank. The tower now belongs to HSBC Bank, a Chinese owned company. I still have many friends and relatives in that area. The Pete Seeger concert will take place in an historic old school, once called Sarah J. Hale High School and now called the Brooklyn School of the Arts. The school was named after a 19th century feminist, publisher, and friend of Abraham Lincoln. Among other things, Sarah J. Hale is credited with successfully campaigning to make Thanksgiving a national holiday.

This PMN gathering will be one for the 'tale-tellers', I think...with Pete S. and Bev Grant and Disabled Singers (et.al.) and such...I'm looking forward to seeing the Friday concert. But, also, I am going to try to attend the Welcome Coffee-House...it sounds like some kind of fulfilling fun...of which I am in daily need of.

The Welcome PMN Coffeehouse on Thurs. 1/27 at the Renaissance Charter School will be a lot of fun. The Renaissance Charter School Chorus will perform, followed by a singaround of all the participants. Should be very relaxed and fun - I'm pleased we're extending the boundaries of the weekend (unofficially, of course) so there's more opportunities to make music together.

The coffeehouse happens from 6:30 - 8:00 PM at the Renaissance Charter School, 35-59 81st Street in Jackson Heights, NY 11372.

Actually, the PMN gathering is from January 29th through the 30th...I'm so anxious for it to begin that I am inching the days forward...or backward, depending upon your concept of time. Anyway, isn't there a "coffee-house" or some-such being set up for Thursday, the 28th? If so, then I'm back on track with time...and rhyme.

Yes, Heather Lev is a "pretty woman" as well as talented...when I was growing up we called that combination "a classy package"...I suppose I shouldn't use that terminology these days, but it's still true...AND she is performing at The People's Voice January 22 (along with Gina Tlamsa...who (apologies extended) is a pretty "classy package", too!).

In regards to the PMN gathering on the weekend of Jan 27th-29th...I'll be there, because PMN "rocks"...even when it's about 'folk songs' and such...good sharing, good info, good 'vibes' and good community! What's not to love?

News flash for McGrath from Harlow: BBC have inquired about covering/taping at the PMN concert and gathering. I don't have details yet - this is a second-hand report. So I don't know if it's radio or TV, let alone what program[me]. Will keep you posted.

In other media madness, a local weekly newspaper did a big cover story on the concert and gathering but completely mucked up several facts in an amusing sort of way. Most funny was the statement that Pete Seeger once played with a band called Leadbelly. Doubtless a major influence on Iron Maiden.

In any case, I hope to see folks from the Brooklyn side of the Atlantic at the concert and subsequent gathering in a few weeks. It will be a blast.

By the way, is it too politically incorrect to mention that not only is Heather talented and dedicated, she is also incredibly good looking? Yes, I know physical beauty is only skin deep yada yada yada, but I still find it quite enjoyable to see such a pretty young woman and hear her playing her guitar and singing her heart out. It carries this old man back to his glory days.

I don't know if Chris and Amira mean that the church is inclusive in its worship. I believe what they mean is that the Lafayette Church, historically and in the present, has social action programs that reach out to all sorts of people. Am I right?

As for the MANY VOICES concert being recorded, you will have to direct your questions to Bev Grant, the concert producer. You can e-mail her at:

Bev Grant's own group, the Brooklyn Women's Chorus, will be among the performers. So, too, will be the PMN Chorus under the direction of Ellen Davidson. In fact, the PMN Chorus will open the concert with three songs, one each by Pat Humphries, Ruth Pelham, and Joe Jencks. Ruth and Joe will both be present. But Pat -- alas! -- has a gig elsewhere. I am certain she will be there in spirit.

Don't forget that the January 28 MANY VOICES concert is part of the 2005 PMN Winter Gathering, and it will be followed by two days of activities at the Renaissance Charter School in Jackson Heights, Queens. These include various workshops -- song swaps, jam sessions, discussions, presentations, instructional sessions, etc. There will also be a one-song-per person Round Robin concert, beginning Saturday afternoon, breaking for lunch, and continuing until 11:30 PM. And on Sunday morning there will be Songs of the Spirit, a leaderless a cappella session.

Harmonic Insurgence, another act at the upcoming People's Music Network concert is also worth listening to - great four-part arrangments of freedom songs from various traditions sung with both precision and gusto (full disclosure: I used to be a member of HI's predecessor chorus).

Hope to see some 'catters on the 28th.

Chris is right. The Lafayette Presbyterian Church has reached out to welcome its new neighbors, especially its many non-Christian new neighbors, including Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus, and Jews. If the world saw more of that side of the USA, and not just see Bush & Company, there would be a lot less anti-American feeling.

I live in the Brooklyn neighborhood that's home to the Lafayette Inspirational Ensemble, which is one of the acts on the bill for this concert, and they are phenomenal. They are based at a church that was founded by abolitionists and has a long history of supporting social change and making a joyful noise while doing it. Just hearing them is worth the price of admission.

By the way if you are interested in songs of freedom and struggle you really need to be at Peoples music network . This is a wonderful opportunity to get in toucch with your folk and protest roots. The City of New York comprises five boroughs: Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island (Richmond), Brooklyn, and Queens. As a New Yorker, I take pride in the richness, complexity, and diversity each presents in its geography, architecture, economy, and culture. I have either lived, worked, or gone to school in each of the five boroughs, and I love them all. And even after having lived 55 of my 57 years in New York City -- I lived elsewhere from age 5 to 7 -- I still make wonderful discoveries, big and small. Among the more recent: a beautiful old stone church nearly hidden among the trees along the Henry Hudosn Parkway in the Bronx, the waterfowl flocking to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge on Broad Chanel Island in Queens, a fine little Italian restaurant (Fresca's) along the Arthur Kill on Staten Island, the derelict remains of a 19th century steam locomotive (very recently removed) along the Kent Avenue waterfront in Brooklyn.

I invite anyone coming to the People's Music Network Winter Gathering to spend some time exploring New York City beyond the usual tourist attractions. In particular, spend some time in Jackson Heights, Queens, the area around the Renaissance Charter School. It is a neighborhood that has been unfairly maligned in Miami Vice, Law and Order, and NYPD Blue as the home turf of Colombian drug lords. In fact, it is a rich and vibrant community where old timers mingle with immigrants from all of South America, as well as from Cuba, Mexico, Ireland, the Philippines, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and elsewhere. It is an area of stately apartment houses built in the 1920s, mixed with garden apartment complexes, mixed with one and two family houses. The Renaissance Charter School -- a K to 12 liberal, progressive charter school -- welcomes all the neighborhood's children, those of immigrant and native parents alike. It is the perfect venue for PMN.

The downtown Brooklyn area around the Brooklyn High School of the Arts is another place worth exploring. The school is sandwiched between two residential streets at the juncture of several neighborhoods, commercial and industrial as well as residential. The school itself draws its students from throughout Brooklyn and beyond. And in addition to offering courses in the visual and the performing arts, it also has a program in art restoration and preservation, perhaps the only such high school program anywhere in the USA.

I could go on, but I've said enough for now.

Thanks Gonzo, maybe I am a bit too sensitive. I just get upset when people stereotype a whole country. After 9/11 there were many who directed their anger toward Muslims. I hate seeing a whole country, race or religion ridiculed or hated because of the actions of a few. Many of us worked really hard to get Bush out of office, but it did not work out. To hear the remarks like the comment you made can really hurt and make others forget their is a strong opposition to what Bush represents. He may have won an election, but he did not get a mandate like he claims. One election and one man cannot tear down the spirit of opposition. This country and the globe we share are too strong to be taken down by a clown from Texas. Rest assured, we are not dancing in the streets because Bush gets four more years. We are taking to the streets and making our voices heard.

I am sure your comments were meant innocently. I did not mean to offend you either, but I hope you can see where I am coming from.

This concert shows the results of people working together and finding common bonds. It is greatly needed at a time like this. Together we can make a change.

Agree with Ron about Gonzo's comment. Actually Bush only got something under 30 per cent of those entitled to vote, right across the States.

As for Brooklyn, that would have been overwhemingly anti Bush. I couldn't find this year's figures, but in 2000 the vote was 89,377 for Buish, 445,196 for Gore, and 22,290 for other candidates.

Outsiders have a very odd view of Brooklyn. Brooklyn is a great city, much safer than people think, and it is very easy to travel to.   Sometimes sterotypical views of city cloud people's reasoning.
