Hi - I've just moved to Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire. I like folk music (tend towards traditional, rather than more contemporary / singer songwriter) but don't play any instruments. I do like to go to concerts, when I can and have been known to sing the occasional ditty, when amongst friends.

Can anyone here point me in the right direction?

You're welcome to West Yorkshire (I've been a missionary here from Lancashire for over 20 years ...... It's VERY hard work)

Try searching for Tyke's News on the Internet or Filofolk, both magazines give lists of clubs throughout the region, there are a wide variety of venue's but you will have to travel, a car is almost essential and a chauffeur preferable

Hi Lucy.

The Trades Club in Hebden Bridge would be the first venue to spring to mind. They have an eclectic series of concerts which will include some trad. alongside singer/songwriter, blues, world, dance and just about anything else you can think of.

The Topic Folk Club in Bradford is the next to spring to mind, although it depends if you want to drive or not, but they have an excellent concert series which deserves support as well as regular singing sessions.

Various sessions/clubs in that bit of Calderdale.. Wednesday 9pmish upstairs at the Stubbing Wharf... on the Tod road, tends to be more contemporary than traditional folk. Thursday, Mason's Arms in Todmorden at the bottom of the road to Bacup on a Thursday night.. have not been to this session since it moved from somewhere along the Burnley Road. Sunday afternoon at the Windmill, Northowram nr Halifax, session/singy thing.. pretty informal. Occassional Saturday Nights at the Blue Pig at Midgehole.. next one 4th Dec. As far as I know Hebden Bridge Folk Club meets alternate weeks at the trades club.

I live in Halifax and get to know most of the folky stuff going on

You need the 'Sing Out' Folk Club which meets at 8:00 pm on the last Tuesday of the month at the Alma pub. at Cottonstones (I think) near Ripponden. Forgive the slight uncertainty but the pub. is situated on a remote eminence in the Pennines and I only go there once a month - in the dark! You do need sherpas and oxygen to get there - but it's worth it! For more info. put either 'Ryburn 3-Step' or 'Pete Coe' into Google (the latter complains a bit when you try to force him into the little slot but he does fit). See you there.

Nobody's mentioned the Famous Bacca Pipes in Keighley, every Friday night. More details on Jim Lawtons's site mentioned above. A fine body of people, grand singing, warmly welcoming and well worth a visit. I'd be a regular myself only it's a bugger getting there for 8.30pm when you finish work in Nottingham well after five...

Bacca Pipes has always been a great club, it's just a pity about it's current venue, in a cellar with no bar, no draught beer and pillars blocking the view if you get sat behind one.
