I remember seeing Rita's first album in the stores back then, might have even owned a copy of it, but I'm not quite sure.

Here is a picture of the album cover and all of the track listings, as well as musicians for that album of Rita's: click here. If you back out of that to the site it is on, it also lists a 1970 album of Mark Benno's on which he did the same song with Rita singing backup.

Yeah, I hate it when that happens...you wear out a copy of something near and dear to you - you go back to purchase it again only to find out it hasn't been reissued. Bummer.

Oops sorry, Neil. I didn't mean to ask if the vinyl could still be found, I meant that they didn't bother to put that first album on CD, I gather... But thanks for your reply--sweet of you.

Hmmm....I don't know, Beanster. It may still be available on vinyl somewhere, I'll have to check. Maybe an outlet like California Albums (I think that's the name - I don't have the source handy at the moment) still has it - I have become so accustomed to CD's that vinyl doesn't even cross my mind anymore.

You're welcome, Felipa, no prob.

And Neil, you mean the first Rita Coolidge on vinyl just doesn't exist anymore? Wow--no wonder I couldn't find it! I'll take extra good care of my old album now--thanks for the info.

The song, "Second Story Window," by Rita Coolidge, is available on an album titled, S/T, a Japanese import. It sells for about $25.00. If you buy it, try going through one of the Mudcat links first so Max'll get some money.

Regards, Neil

Felipa!! There you are!

I've searched countless lyric sites, Marc Benno sites, Rita Coolidge sites--no luck. So here, to the best of my recollection (and I used to sing this song SO much, it was burned into my brain) are the lyrics to "Second Story Window":

Second Story Window (Marc Benno)

Live your life however
You want to do whatever
You want to and you'll never die
You can do whatever
You want to do whatever
You want to do, you can try

(Chorus) And you know who your friends are
By looking in their eyes
You know, so you smile
But they never realize
What goes on inside every me and you
Keeps on a-rollin' on
Keeps on a-rollin' on

Life just lasts a second
You don't have time to reckon
Things that people say and do
Try to find your secrets
This is just a sequence
To be one day going through

(Chorus)

I thought this thread was dead. Waiting to see some lyrics from you, Beano, and hope I'll be able to confirm that this is the long lost song. I don't remeber Benno, nor the Asylum Choir.
THANKS

Dear Alice,

Yes!! I remember that! I never knew she asked if they wanted spaghetti! (My hi-fi wasn't all that great.) lolol Learn something new every day! I wasn't in college then--was a mere sprout of 13--but all that music meant so much to me cuz it felt like that was my only friend at the time (sob sob)...tumultuous adolescence! But whatever that song was, I loved it. Yeah, really brings back some memories, huh? Thanks, Alice, for the post.

Hey, you're bringing back my college days when I was an FM dj, loved spinning those records of the Asylum Choir, Leon Russell and Marc Benno. Remember that cut on Leon's record where Rita Coolidge comes into the studio and asks if they want some spaghetti and Leon asks her which intro to a song she likes best....

Oh, the college days, gone, oh, gone like our youth, too soon.

Dusting off an old thread I found, that I actually have the answer to, I thought I'd post it--what the heck. Felipa, if you're still out there, it's called "Second Story Window" by Marc Benno, on the first Rita Coolidge album. Haven't really looked for the words anywhere, but if you ever read this, I can probably retrieve them for you from the brain databank. It's a lovely song.

I remember a verse, the words are a bit odd:
    Live your life however
    you want to do whatever
    and you'll never die
and you know who you friends are...[see first entry to this thread]

would it be better to start a new thread with the title including words from the song rather than naming one artist who might not be the only one to sing it?

Gene, I don't know the title of this song and I don't know if it's one of the ones at the list you pointed me to. I think I listened to "Greatest hits" and that it wasn't included. The track lists are for CDs and I suspect this song has never been re-issued -- otherwise someone would know it! (I still hope someone does)

It's time to refresh this lyrics request. I did once try looking at a more pop oriented web site - I expect it was the late lamented International song server - found lots of Rita Coolidge songs but not this one, as far as I could tell. I don't know the title

stretching the boundaries of folk and traditional music, but I know how broad-minded Mudcatters are. Circa 1972, Rita Coolidge had a song that was very big on the airwaves at least in Ithaca, NY. The catchy tune is still in my head and I've never been able to find it on any of Rita's albums, including retrospective ones. The chorus was something like:
And you know who your friends are
    by looking in their eyes.
You know so you smile, but they never realise
What goes on inside every me and you
Keeps on a going on (a-on_
    Keeps on a-goin' on

well..does anybody know it/about it?
