The Wikipedia entry on the Pecker mentions the Galtymore Rd. connection but without citing a source.

The Music Department at Limerick University is working with Travellers and the Dunne Family feature strongly in their programme and are regular visitors there.
Try their website.
The Dunne Brothers DVD on their lives was issued by NOMAD at The World Academy of Music and Dance www.irishworldacademy.ie
The Pecker has a house in Kilimer, South West Co. Clare - that address should get him - or the telephone directory.

Hi, I am trying to find any references to the Dunne family living on Galtymore Road in Drimnagh, it would have been when Pecer was a boy. Can anyone verify it, especially with a written reference. Cheers

First time I met Pecker was in Ballybunion in 1967, he was doing the summer seaso there with 3 more and it was the beach every night that was the bed happy days. I met him again in Ballybunion in the Atlantic many years later and he was drinking pots of tea he had conquered the demon drink at the time. I went to stay with him just outside Killimer afew miles from the ferry port. He was living with a Dutch Girl? at the time. Have not met him for a number of years.

I have an album entitled The Gatecrashers (Capitol Records Canada, 1967) named after Dublin's Gate Theatre. It features Danny Doyle, Shay Healy, Paddy Reilly and Pecker Dunne. Pecker is featured in four songs: The Last of the Travelling People, Wexford, Sullivan's John and Seven Drunken Nights. Let me know if you'd like further details.

I was fortunate enough to be in his company on a few occasions when he played in the Boolavogue Inn in Enniscorthy in the late sixties and early seventies. The Boolavogue Inn has long since disappeared, but I'm glad to say the Pecker is still with us. Limerick University published a book and CD of his life and songs last year, as told to them by the Pecker himself. Very go read and listen. I you contact the University I'm sure they will still have some copies available.

Seamus

It's nice to see that there's a picture of him in Fintan Vallel's "Companion Guide to Traditional Irish Music", albeit under the heading "banjo", rather than his own name. The background is busy with people and animals, so maybe taken at a fair somewhere?

I passed the cup for him a long time ago. He taught me how to pass it around in the traditional way. We (there were about eight of us) always had enough money for some apples and bread and cheese...the beer was usually free but not always.

His larger than life persona captivated me. I think he may be one of the last 'hedgerow masters' and he sure knew alot of songs! I had a blast but I have to admit, I was always a little scared of him. He seemed to always say exactly what was on his mind in a very blunt and forceful manner. Maybe I should say what I felt was awe, not really fear. His ways were so different than mine. He was, however, kind to me and probably barely tolerated that little, hippy girl hangin around trying to figure out what this was all about!

Ah, old times! I remember the Pecker and his father the Fiddler, they lived not too far from me here in Wexford Town and Pecker still has many cousins here. I think he now lives somewhere in the Youghal area.

The Pecker Dunne is still amongst us alright, I Last heard him sighted at the Galway races last year, and was also around Killarney town for a while.

He is now, I believe fairly comfortable, with a secure home for himself and family, but still the same aul loveable rouge he always was. I have had the privelage of playing music with him and his children in the past, and please god i will again in the future. The Man is a scholar, a rouge, a gentleman, and a fine musican, for his likes, there will always be a welcome.

Is Pecker (christened, Peter) still with us? Tune, Tramps and Hawkers?

Paraphrasing Christy Moore, "I never met Bob Dylan, but I got to sing with the Pecker Dunne". Christy did a benefit gig for Pecker at some stage.

WEXFORD

My family lived in Wexford town, stopped travelling and settled down,
Though my father kept a horse and car, we lived within the town,
The people there misunderstood, or they did not know our ways,
So with horse and car, back on the road, I began my travelling days.

My father was called the Fiddler Dunne, and I'm a fiddler too,
But although I often felt his fist, he taught me all he knew,
I know I'll never be as good, and yet I feel no shame,
For the other things my father taught, I am proud to bear his name.

He taught me pride and how to live, though the road is hard and long,
And how a man will never starve, with a banjo, fiddle or song,
And how to fight for what I own, and what I know is right,
And how to camp beside a ditch on a stormy winter's night.

O times were good and times were bad, and people cruel and kind,
But what I learned of people then, has stayed within my mind,
I'll honour friends with all my heart, do for them all I can,
But I've learnt to go the road again, when they spurn the tinker man.

O Wexford is a town I like, but the travelling man they scorn,
And a man must feel affection for the town where he was born,
I know one day, that I'll go back, when my travelling days are done,
And people will begin to wonder, what has happened to the Pecker Dunne.

Written by Pecker Dunne.

No, I know the one you mean, it's a more detailed song about himself, his father and upbringing

I know one verse starts

My family came from Wexford town......

And it also tells how his father taught how to sleep in a ditch on a cold and frosty night

More of a personal tribute than a general lament for the traveling people as a whole
