I've just heard that Robin Hall has died, aged 61. He was a pioneer of the Scottish folk revival and sang with Jimmie MacGregor on TV (Cliff Michelmore's Tonight Show on BBC, where he insisted on wearing his Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament badge). I've lost touch with him in recent years, but I am writing an obituary and would appreciate any news of him, date of birth, marital status etc, and any contact telephone numbers in UK of anyone I could talk to. Please email me at karl@houstonm.demon.co.uk or call me at +44(0)1274 687221. Thanks.

Sorry to hear this Karl. The first folk record I ever bought was his 10-inch LP, Last Leaves of the Traditional Ballads. I can hear him singing "Doon Deeside Cam' Inverey" and "A Minister's Daughter in the North."

All the best.

My friend Scout Lamont is/was a long-time drinking buddy of his - they usually met in the Western Bar, Great Western Road, Glasgow, although Robin was also a BBC Club man. Call Scout at 0141-334-3224 for info.

Scout and Robin were friends to the end, and, having been banned from the Western Bar due to playing a trumpet during someone's karioke performance, had made Tennent's Bar their stamping ground. Just two weeks ago they did a 45-minute tape with Robin on piano singing, at one point, what sounds like Will Ye No Come Back Again. This is probably his last recording. Unfortunately, it is somewhat marred by the noise of a drunken ruffian from the BBC threatening Hall's person, but possibly, with modern technology, this intrusion could be edited out. The time of the funeral, which Scout thinks may be held at Lambhill Crematorium, has yet to be announced, as far as he knows.

Anyone know of a source for "Last Leaves of Traditional Ballads"? I have never heard Robin Hall but read somewhere this was a great lp.

It was a ten inch album on Collector records (JFS 4020) and also featured Leon Rosselson.

Tracks are:
The Three Gipsy Laddies
Mary Mild
The Wee Cooper of Fife
The Cruel Mother
Bawbie Allen
Lord Lovel
Inverey
The Trouper and the Maid
