I am about to start a short contract in Oxford (UK!).
Can anyone tell me of MID-WEEK clubs in the area? Tue, Wed, or Thur only, as I go home at weekends. Or Morris sides who practice midweek and would welcome temporary guests.

Thanks

Singing and music sessions often on at The Half Moon, St clements. Can't remember what on what days but I'm sure they have singing, blues/bluegrass? and Irish sessons through the week. Joe should start giving me beer the amount I seem to be advertising his pub! The club is on Friday,a nd there are a few morris sides, btu I don't know when they practice or how amenable they are to new commers. I know one inparticular probably wouldn't relish it.

Have fun, Fay xx

Masquerading as Liz the Squeak....

If you are moving to the Oxford area, you could do worse for Morris than Haddenham. There are at least 3 morris teams in that area (Towersey, Haddenham & Owlswick), there is Haddenham Folk day (today as it happens), Towersey festival, and much more.

Hi Pavane,

The Half-Moon's main session is on Sundays, but there is often folk music on a Wednesday too. There's also a great french music session every 2nd Tuesday (next one 14th Dec) at the Chester Arms, Chester Street off the Iffley Road.

The Oxford club does meet on Fridays at the Port Mahone on St. Clements, if you want anything midweek you'll need to take a short journey out in a few directions!

Banbury Ride a Cock Horse Folk Club - Wednesdays at the Mill on Spiceball Park in the centre of town.

Maidenhead Folk Club - Thursdays (Was at the Ferry, Cookham last time I went)

The Killingworth Castle, Wootton nr Woodstock has folk every Friday and is still advertising folk gigs on 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month too.

I'm afraid that's about it. If I hear about anything happening as a one-off, I'll post it here

Cheers

Squeezy

Squeezy - when were you last at Maidenhead folk club? - they've been meeting at the Seven Stars, Knowl Hill, on the A4 east of Reading for several months. I'm not sure when/ if it will go back to the Ferry.

Do I remember rightly that the Oxfords were two tone while the Cambridge was a single solid colour?

But not blue, dark OR light?

PS The Morris car derived its name from the family name Morris, which is probably due to some ancestor having been a Morris dancer. So there IS a likely link.

Oxford, and Oxfordshire, of course, has always been well known for Morris dancing.

As far as I know, the surname Morris means swarthy, or dark skinned, it is the same derivation as the first name Maurice which comes from the latin Maurus which also meant dark skinned.

There is much debate on the origins of the term "Morris Dancing" - but many people believe it comes from Moorish Dancing - The Moors were originally the inhabitants of Mauretania (North-West Africa). Given that the earliest references to Morris Dancing in England is in the 1400s or 1500s, I'm not sure if there is a connection, but if there is - it is quite a small one!

Cheers

Squeezy

I thought the Moorish theory had been abandoned a long time ago.
No-one really knows ANYTHING at all about the origins of the dance OR the name.

I haven't yet managed to attend a club or session in Oxford, for various reasons, but I hope to make it sometime soon.
Any more information would be welcome.

PS
Are you here yet, rock chick?
