Subject: RE: Now that's UK worst Christmas No 1 EVER! From: ev Date: 19 Dec 04 - 12:19 AM just because these tunes were the songs of the moment the week that included Christmas doesn't make them Christmas songs -- what I find particularly revolting are the songs that add to the stress of the season by rearing their ugly and insufferable mutant heads the moment the whistle blows and the mall doors open on "This Most Wunnerful Time Of The Year". gag me. Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer was cute the first two times I heard it. You were all saved from having it make any sort of list, now there's something to celebrate! There is a song so thick with sappiness the Tin Man would have popped his rivets to yank out his ticker and stomp that sucker flat (for THIS I wanted emotional awareness?!!) -- the song is formulaic in extreme in that it has an "aw geee" kid, a dying mum, many mentions of meeting Jesus, an angellic kids chorus -- all revolving around the purchase of a pair of "Christmas Shoes". It was even turned into a TV movie of the season here in the states. If there is a hell and I'm goin' there, this is in heavy rotation on the playlist. Hands down most awful Christmas tune EVER. I confess I haven't heard all the tunes you've listed -- but then I don't listen to Top 40 radio over here, either, if it can be helped. I must admit I am agog that Little Jimmy Osmond's shamelessly saccharine chipmunk cheeky defining moment in the spotlight (tho propped and propelled there by the machine of Family Business)is remembered by ANYONE at all, never mind that you evil Brits conspired to make it a hit!? I suppose it gets my vote. and you get the bill for the sessions of therapy this will require to "get over and move beyond it." lol. ev. |

Subject: RE: Now that's UK worst Christmas No 1 EVER! From: GUEST,Kukamongian boy Date: 12 Dec 04 - 02:47 PM Gee.... I think this list is just too short. There are many many bad xmas sing missing. But there's something i can say about all of them: just like chemical weapons they must be banned and if it is possible, to be completely eliminated. Their composers should pay in jail and if their have passed away, they families must return to the humanity all what they have taken away. STOP B.U.L.L.S.H.I.T. music. Greetings; GZ |
Subject: RE: Now that's UK worst Christmas No 1 EVER! From: Compton Date: 12 Dec 04 - 01:11 PM Whenever I hear (at the end of August, "So, here it is, Merry Christmas, Everybody's having fun(!!)"...I break out in a cold sweat nad have to lie in a darkened room, ideally until December 28th. |
Subject: RE: Now that's UK worst Christmas No 1 EVER! From: Allan@LonsdaleLive Date: 11 Dec 04 - 01:08 PM What worries me is that Bohemian Rhapsody was a Christmas number 1 TWICE!? My fave is also Fairytale of New York and I don't think it has anything to do with the 'folk' connection, it's just got the right feel. Spot on. |
Subject: RE: Now that's UK worst Christmas No 1 EVER! From: The Walrus Date: 11 Dec 04 - 12:28 PM "...chubby browns santa claus wheres my ******* bike..." Is that anything like Kevin Bloody Wilson's "Santa Clause You C***, Where's my F****** Bike"? Worst song on the list? Mr Blobby, no contest Walrus |
Subject: RE: Now that's UK worst Christmas No 1 EVER! From: Richard Bridge Date: 11 Dec 04 - 04:24 AM I gather the Cheeky Girls have one in contention for this year. |
Subject: RE: Now that's UK worst Christmas No 1 EVER! From: Strupag Date: 10 Dec 04 - 08:11 PM There's a great single out now and I reckon it is a contendor. It's called "I'd like to give you one for Christmas" by "Hotpants" I played it on my morning show on Cuillin FM last tuesday and am still taking the flack! Andy |
Subject: RE: Now that's UK worst Christmas No 1 EVER! From: GUEST,Dave Roberts Date: 10 Dec 04 - 03:38 PM I have known normally sane people driven to insensate rage by Long Haired Lover From Liverpool. Of course, for the full effect you have to be able to see Little Jimmy peforming the song in his toe-curlingly cutesy way. I believe there was a considerable trade that Christmas in Little Jimmy wax dolls with a good supply of pins. True Jimmy haters heated the pins up first before plunging. I'm told Mr Osmond is now a reformed character and runs a production company or something. But can he ever atone for the outrageous and unforgiveable sin that was Long Haired Lover? Dave Roberts P.S. Oh, by the way, just in case I have left any room for doubt I think Long Haired Lover From Liverpool by Little Jimmy Osmond was the worst UK Christmas number one ever. Oh yes. . |

Subject: RE: Now that's UK worst Christmas No 1 EVER! From: GUEST,pickle Date: 10 Dec 04 - 01:58 PM I remember 'Grandma' by the St. Winifred's School Choir because my sister bought my mum it for Christmas in 1980, when my niece was very young. More recently my younger niece has been singing it round the house! |
Subject: RE: Now that's UK worst Christmas No 1 EVER! From: Pistachio Date: 05 Dec 04 - 05:08 PM 80,82,93 Ugh! in any order. I too like Mull of Kintyre - hearing it still 'takes me back' to the firemans strike when I was on standby to assist in London - but spent my time with a borrowed guitar in Barracks at Mill Hill. Those were the days. |
Subject: RE: Now that's UK worst Christmas No 1 EVER! From: Chris Green Date: 05 Dec 04 - 04:14 PM The one redeeming feature of Mr Blobby was that it proved once and for all that Noel Edmunds is so talentless that he can be upstaged by a six foot pink condom. |

Subject: RE: Now that's UK worst Christmas No 1 EVER! From: Dave Wynn Date: 04 Dec 04 - 06:42 PM Dave The Gnome.......How could you.......how could you. I am speechless. Without speech.....Boheeemian Rhapshody.....I seem to remember some event not too many years ago when while you were on stage a totally out of his / her tree person staggered up and asked if you could do "bowheemian Rhpahapsody". I also seem to remember your reply....It consisted of a few sylabubbs but had lots of ffff's in it. Shame on you DtG. Best Christmas single ever is Ged Todds parody of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reign dear. Spot the Dog |
Subject: RE: Now that's UK worst Christmas No 1 EVER! From: Little Hawk Date: 04 Dec 04 - 05:45 PM January would actually be the best time to have Christmas. January 25th. Why? Because it's the middle of the blasted winter! One needs a break in the middle of the worst weather, not at the beginning of it. |
Subject: RE: Now that's UK worst Christmas No 1 EVER! From: GUEST,Anne Croucher Date: 04 Dec 04 - 05:38 PM Wow I have missed all pop music for over a decade - I can remember ayayayayayayay wheell aoolllwayayayyaays etc, but the rest seem to have passed me by completly. Subject: RE: Now that's UK worst Christmas No 1 EVER! From: Clinton Hammond Date: 04 Dec 04 - 05:08 PM I can't pick ONE outa all that cr@p.... But I will say this... Yes... 'Fairytale Of New York' IS a fantastic song... especially when performed by (Like ALL Shane McGowan material) Christy Moore |
Subject: RE: Now that's UK worst Christmas No 1 EVER! From: s6k Date: 04 Dec 04 - 05:02 PM much underrated "These Are The Days of Our Lives" as well, which was the double A-Side to the re-released Bohemian Rhapsody single when Freddie died. The lyrics are probably my favourite ever, such a nice song, and my favourite by Queen |
Subject: RE: Now that's UK worst Christmas No 1 EVER! From: Dave the Gnome Date: 04 Dec 04 - 02:07 PM That's what I thought, Richard, but it seems that someone else made teh No. 1 slot for Christmas that year. Cliff either didn't make it or did so only after Christmas. And who said Bohemian Rhapsody was bad! Best song ever:-) Especialy if you sing the 'I see a little sillouette' bit to the White Cockade tune... Cheers DtG |
Subject: RE: Now that's UK worst Christmas No 1 EVER! From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 04 Dec 04 - 01:39 PM Well it is Christmas, you'd expect some turkeys. A whole flock of turkeys in fact. But picking "worst of" is to my mind a lot less interesting than "best of". And while I agree that Fairytale of New York is perhaps the best Christmas record ever, it never made it to that disconcerting list. However one outstandingly good record that did make it to Number One is the 1983 version of "Only You" by the Flying Pickets. |
Subject: RE: Now that's UK worst Christmas No 1 EVER! From: Richard Bridge Date: 04 Dec 04 - 01:16 PM Surely the worst Xmas single ever was Cliff Richard's the Lords's prayer to the tune of Auld Lang Syne. |
Subject: RE: Now that's UK worst Christmas No 1 EVER! From: s6k Date: 04 Dec 04 - 07:28 AM mad world i would say was the best no.1 ever |

Subject: RE: Now that's UK worst Christmas No 1 EVER! From: GUEST,greg stephens Date: 04 Dec 04 - 03:49 AM Mistletoe and Wine is the worst Christmas song by miles. I think Bohemian Rhapsody is a worse record(it elevatd badness to very high art indeed), but it hasn't got the special kind of populist naffness that makes a true Christmas No 1; so I have to award the palm to the Blessed Cliff. |
Subject: RE: Now that's UK worst Christmas No 1 EVER! From: Dave Hanson Date: 04 Dec 04 - 03:38 AM Anything by that twat Cliff eeeucchh Richard. Although ' Fairy Tale Of New York ' is a great song it is hardly a ' Chritmas ' song, someone dying of a drug overdose !! eric |
Subject: RE: Now that's UK worst Christmas No 1 EVER! From: John Routledge Date: 03 Dec 04 - 11:23 AM Thanks Christmas 1980. I have lived 100yds from St Winifred's School since 1986 and always wondered why it is/was famous. |
Subject: RE: Now that's UK worst Christmas No 1 EVER! From: Bernard Date: 03 Dec 04 - 11:22 AM Sadly, it looks as if 'Do They Know It's Christmas', Band Aid 20 version, is set to be this year's number one... they really should have put more effort into doing something more worthy of the cause. I'm not saying people shouldn't buy it, because it is a worthy cause... but why did they do such a sloppy cover of the original?! Aaah, bum hug! |
Subject: RE: Now that's UK worst Christmas No 1 EVER! From: Scooby Doo Date: 03 Dec 04 - 11:11 AM I think 1971 and 1972 was the worst Christmas songs. |
Subject: RE: Now that's UK worst Christmas No 1 EVER! From: Little Hawk Date: 03 Dec 04 - 10:30 AM I'll go with... I Will Always Love You - Whitney Houston Don't You Want Me - Human League (Man, do I detest that song!) And how did Paul Anka fail to make the list? freda - That sounds blood-chillingly awful! I am trying to imagine what an oriental person would get out of listening to "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" over and over again...how would they interpret it? Why would they want to? The mind boggles, as Batman used to say. Fortunately I watch no TV and listen to no commercial radio stations, so I'm relatively well protected from this dreck...until I venture out to the mall or restaurant! |
