Subject: Da Doo Ron Ron - need words and music
From: GUEST,JennieG at work

I can get the words easily enough but finding the sheet music (not just chords) on the net has me stumped. Any search tips?

BTW I know it's not folk....but it's music!

Cheers
JennieG

It would but I would have to pay! I know there are free sheet music sites out there but I am having trouble finding this song. I can remember the words from a thousand years ago when I was young and lovely, but I need dots.

Cheers

Dang. Hal Leonard failed me. I checked three Hal Leonard fakebooks, two from Warner, and one from MCA/Mills. No Cigar. Hal Leonard has a Doo Wop songbook with an arrangement of the song, but it's not in his fakebooks.

Why on earth does anyone need sheet music for a song like this? Can't you just busk it, it's pretty simple after all.

Or are you trying to teach a child to play it on the recorder or something, in which case you could write the tune out in about five minutes.

I get the impression there are some interesting doo wop arrangements of this song. Sure, you can improvise - but a beginner or intermediate performer can learn a lot from sheet music. It's a good song to learn on.

Some chords here: Da Doo Ron Ron

Not sure if these are any good. I had a friend who sang this to his dog when the dog did doo doo, with a few changes in notes and words.

Olga also has them, but I think this is a pay site:
Da Doo Ron Ron

Friend of mine wrote a parody, given Phil Spector's criminal difficulties. It starts out:

They found her on a Monday and her heart stood still.
Da doo ron ron ron, da doo ron ron.
They said the one who shot her was a man named Phil.
So doo run ron ron, da doo ron ron.

The Voice Squad, great Irish exponents of harmony singing in a traditional context, used to sing a version of this as a bit of relief during a session! Brilliant!

The "pay" sheet music provided through the first link mentioned in this thread says that it's for choral groups, so one would hope it provides good four-part harmony. Whether it's "the" authentic harmony from the Phil Spector arrangement -- well, that's another question.

If I may creep just a bit, let me venture the opinion that "Please Mr. Postman" is an especially interesting rock-vocal-harmony piece. The background-singers' part has different lyrics and a different rhythmic pattern for every verse, building in complexity from beginning to end. I suppose that this song is not, strictly speaking, a "doo-wop" number; "Motown girl-group" is probably a more accurate classification.

OK, I know this doesn't satisfy the request, but since we've started a thread on it, we might as well have the lyrics here in case someone looks for them here in the future.

DA DOO RON RON
Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector

I met her on a Monday and my heart stood still.
Da doo ron ron ron, da doo ron ron ron.
Somebody told me that her name was Jill.
Da doo ron ron ron, da doo ron ron ron.
Yes, my heart stood still.
Yes, her name was Jill.
And when I walked her home,
Da doo ron ron ron, da doo ron ron ron.

I knew what she was thinkin' when she caught my eye. / Da doo...
I looked so quiet but, my, oh my! / Da doo...
Yes, she caught my eye.
Yes, but, my, oh my!
And when I walked her home, / Da doo...

Well, I picked her up at seven and she looked so fine. / Da doo...
Someday soon I'm gonna make her mine. / Da doo...
Yes, she looked so fine.
Yes, I'll make her mine.
And when I walked her home, / Da doo...
Yeah, yeah, yeah. / Da doo...

Hi Jenny G,

I have music writing software which can create a MIDI file of the song. If you have the capability of receiving a MIDI and converting †o notation, I could write it out and send it to you via email. If not, I'll try to create a pdf file and send that. Send me a private message and I'll respond.

Best,
Ray

Last week at choir practice a couple of us spontaneously started singing this song and others who knew it joined in. Our director then said that, given the music, she could write a 3 part harmony for it and we think it would be a fun song to add to our repertoire next year. We do 2 or 3 other songs from the 50's and 60's (Bye Bye Love, Something Tells Me I'm Into Something Good for example) and this would be good to feature the women - Something Tells Me features the men so we want equal time! I have sent Ray a PM, and I thank you all for your help, youse are all wonderful.

Cheers
JennieG

I remember hearing a very Trad, a capella group launch into this as their closing number after a long introduction all about traditional love songs always featuring a man called William. It was beautiful and hilarious!

A couple of the 4-piece a cappella girl groups I've been in (Mna and Serafina in particular) have done this song - it's pretty easy to work out & learn by ear - I think we originally used a Mint Juleps (UK) recording from the early 80s(??) ... now they were a great group!

There are only 3 notes in this song; just try all the different permutations! (3x2x1=6) Likewise you can get away with 3 chords, or maybe even 2!

Hi Jennie,

I've got it for you but I'll need to snail mail it. Every time I try to create that PDF something goes haywire and it comes out looking like a battlefield map or something wierd. Another private message should do the job.

It's great that you're in a community singing group. I'm also in one here in Northern California. Great minds think alike, eh?

Best,
Ray
