Is that the one one chorus is [Tanquery Martini oh?] Is sung about crusing in Long Island Sound?? Also a song called Bucket mouth McGinty??

Definitely not the first because the original was old - or at least older than tanquery. The second i'm not familiar with - my brother (who is the ultimate recipient of the search) always called it the booze yacht song but that could easily be merely how the words sounded to him at ten. I'll check into Bucket Mouth McGinty. Thanks. Karen

racking my brain without any luck. asked my dad what he remembered and said the song was about running liquor off the cape hatteras, n.c. coast so maybe it's not so old. oh well. maybe a drink would help refresh my memory - thanks.

hey guys, found it through "folkways". they list it on an album called "between the sound and the sea" and it's just called Booze Yacht. Thanks for the help.

The coming of the Venture put fishing on the bum.
The people lost religion, they backslid by the score;
The king lockstopper stood ace high, when the booze yacht run ashore.

The people all were happy, they laughed and danced with glee.
Everyone had a fine old time, even bums like me.
Some folks would give most all they had and some a damn sight more
To bring back that good old time, when the booze yacht run ashore.

I got this one from Ed Trickett when he performed it during a concert on the pier at South Street Seaport, sponsored by Pinewoods.
He learned it from the author. It is based upon actual events which occurred near Hatteras.

There is a more complete description of the story in Stories of the Outer Banks [I will provide a more complete citation when we get home from Maine].

Apparently, the morning after the party, a couple of Hard Guys came into town and advised the town fathers that, while their boss did not object to a party, he wanted to buy the remaining booze back. The town fathers considered the offer for about one tenth of a second and offered to refloat the Venture and even to help load the cargo aboard.

The Venture was refloated and placed at the end of the town dock with a couple of natives in the hold to stow the bottles that were passed down to them. As the people brought their booze down, the got a buck or so per bottle and then passed it aboard. After a while, the hard guys realized that they had bought much more than the original cargo. When the looked into the hold to see how the stowage had gone, they saw a couple of guys and a couple of bottles. It seemed that the bottles were being handed out through the port to people waiting under the pier, who then would "recycle" the cargo.

Realizing what they were up against, the Hard Guys kicked their assistants onto the pier, revved up the engines and departed. They have not been reported since.

Barry, Jon Campbell's "Tanqueray Martini-O" is also on The Boarding Party's 3rd album, "Too Far From the Shore" (surely you have a copy of that...?) Jon also recorded it himself, on his album "Ferrying to the Isle of Block." Jon's recording includes an extra verse that the BP hadn't heard at the time they recorded the song.

It is a fun song, and was always a big hit at The Boarding Party's gigs.

Trickett's notes: One of the many songs about shipwrecks, this one with same side benefits for the local populace. I learned it many years ago from Florence Brunnings through Ben Mandell. Florence collected it from Betty Vaiden Williams of Durham, North Carolina at the infamous Pineweods summer camp in Buzzard's Bay, Massachusetts.

As mentioned, I got this from Ed's concert at South Street Seaport during the 70's. When I called him to get further details, he told me of the Brunnings/Mandell/Williams history.

One of the comments in the book is that a side effect of selling the booze back to the 'leggers was that the money allowed people to live a little better through the winter of 1930.

"Harkers Island humor long ago married a Prohibition-era accident—the grounding of the rumrunner Adventure out on the Banks in 1923—and produced a song now widely appreciated as the Carteret County National Anthem. "The Booze Yacht," a ballad of the whiskey-boat's jettisoning its illegal cargo and the subsequent local results, was set to the melody of an earlier song, "The Sidewalks of New York," and lyricized by New Yorker Ralph Sanders, who lived on Harkers Island at the time—and then popularized far and wide by a local fiddler named Ivey Scott. The Beehive, Karen Arnspacher has told me, was Cleveland Davis's general store, once located about the middle of the south shore, just west of where the Island Fishing Center is now."
