Subject: Riley Puckett's Version of Peach Pickin' From: GUEST,Joe Fogey Date: 08 Dec 04 - 05:46 PM A while ago I heard a recording of Riley Puckett singing Peach Pickin' Time In Georgia. Does anyone know if this is available on CD - I've tried Googling it but all I get is Jimmy Rodgers' version. The Riley Puckett version had a very fetching mandolin backing. Thanks in advance, Joe Fogey |

Subject: RE: Riley Puckett's Version of Peach Pickin' From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 Dec 04 - 08:35 PM This is the kind of question that allmusic is usually good at answering. It lists recordings by Bill Clifton, John England, David Grisman, Jack Guthrie, Merle Haggard, Grandpa Jones, Kimmel & Rosenstein, Bill Monroe, Willie Nelson, The Riverside Trio, Jimmie Rodgers, The Rooftop Singers, Betty Jo & Johnny Starr, Merle Travis, Doc Watson, and Hank Snow (who called it PEACH PICKING TIME DOWN IN GEORGIA). But none by Riley Puckett. So it looks as if it hasn't been reissued on CD. This page confirms that Puckett recorded it, however, in 1941, on the Bluebird label. PEACH PICKIN' TIME IN GEORGIA was written by Clayton McMichen and Jimmie Rodgers. |

Subject: RE: Riley Puckett's Version of Peach Pickin' From: Stewie Date: 09 Dec 04 - 08:24 PM Joe, the exact title of Puckett's recording was 'When it's peach pickin' time in Georgia' [BB B-8954]. I don't think you will find it on CD. As far as I am aware, there have been only 3 CD issues devoted to Puckett: 'Old Time Greats Vol I' and 'Old Time Greats Vol II' on Old Homestead, OHCD 4114 and OHCD 4174 respectively; and 'There's a hard time coming' BACM CD D040. The song does not appear on any of these. It may be on an old-timey compilation but, if so, I haven't seen it. Track listings for Old Homesteads are HERE and for the BACM HERE. --Stewie. |
