Subject: RE: Req/ADD: Me and My Shadow (from Peter Pan) From: GUEST,Peggy Date: 21 Oct 09 - 02:40 PM I have that album here somewhere, after reading this I'm tearing my house apart trying to find it. I remember my mom buying it for me at a .5 & .10 store along with a Peter and the Wolf record in the 60's. Peter Pan was me and my brothers favorite record when we were kids. I could probably rememember just about every word. Wendy's lullaby was one of my favorite songs.. la la la lu la.. It was from Rocking Horse records and nothing like the Walt Disney or broadway version. My copy has some skips from scratches in it, so I was looking thru the internet to see if I could find another copy. Back to the search, it was fun to hear of others with the same memorys. |

I totally remember the "I can fly song". I had forgotten about it. These were on a Peter Pan LP (the small ones). I had this when I was a kid, I'm 25 now. Subject: RE: Req/ADD: Me and My Shadow (from Peter Pan) From: GUEST Date: 21 Feb 09 - 12:44 AM I wouldn't go to sleep for my nap unless I played that album--40 odd years ago. Definitely from the '60s and not from the Broadway version. Here are other songs I remember, besides Me & My Shadow: I can fly, I can fly, it's as easy as pie, I can fly like a bird, I can fly. Over the ? and through the room--(something...)whirling and wheeling and feeling as high as the sky, I can fly, I can fly, I can fly. Peter Pan, Peter Pan, who are you Peter Pan? I'm a little boy, who never grew up, my name is Peter Pan. I'm captain of the little boys, in Never Never Never Land. Peter Pan, Peter Pan of Never Never Never Land. Peter also said something like: "Never have to go to school, never wear a tie, never wash my face, never comb my hair, never have to do nothin' I don't want to do... There was a whole section of the record about the crocodile who swallowed a clock--but that part used to scare me, so I skipped it. Then there was the rhyming part where Wendy sewed on Peter's shadow. Something like... W:I'll sew your shadow on. P: Ouch it hurts, ouch it hurts, please don't take so long. T: Be still, be still I'm almost done...there, your shadow's on. P: Thank you Wendy Thank you for that trip down memory lane. Then there was the Ugly Duckling album... |

Subject: RE: Req/ADD: Me and My Shadow (from Peter Pan) From: GUEST Date: 13 Feb 09 - 04:31 PM Me and My Shadow is not from the Broadway musical PETER PAN. Broadway composer, Billy Rose wrote it in the 1930s for his musical revue CRAZY QUILT. PETER PAN was written in 1954 by Moose Charlap, Carolyn Leigh, Betty Comden, Adolph Green and Jule Styne. Peter sings "I Gotta Crow" as he does shadow hand tricks in the original Mary Martin version and then the shadow tricks disappeared for the Sandy Duncan (1979) and Cathy Rigby (1990s) versions. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: know this song? (from Peter Pan re shadow From: Joe Offer Date: 26 Jul 08 - 11:38 PM Well, there are FOUR Peter Pan Broadway shows, and none has a song about a shadow. The 1907 production had one song by Jerome Kern, and the 1924 production had two Kern songs. The third production (1950), starring Jean Arthur and Boris Karloff, had the following songs with music and lyrics by Leonard Bernstein:
It's the fourth production (1954) that we're familiar with, the one starring Mary Martin (and Sandy Duncan in the 1979 revival). Music was by Jule Styne, with lyrics mostly by Betty Comden and Adolph Green:

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: know this song? From: Jim Dixon Date: 16 Dec 04 - 10:01 AM Seth: There is a post in the KIDiddles Discussion Board where someone is seeking the same song and says it was on a "Peter Pan" record she had as a kid in the early 60s. Her quote is similar to yours: "we're always together as close as can be; we make pictures on the floor and the walls, like rabbits and dogs, but that's not all." But she might know more than she posted. She's looking for the recording, not lyrics. Googling with the phrase "Me and my shadow, my shadow and me" (in quotes) gets a few hits, but they're only brief quotes, with no explanation. There are a couple of dozen albums with "Peter Pan" as the title, or part of the title. You can find them at allmusic. Maybe if you browse through the track lists and listen to the sound samples, you will recognize the song you're looking for. If you come up with more information, please come back here and post it. |

This song has been recorded, sometimes in abridged form, by several artists in the past, including Perry Como, Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland. Thanks to Trace for sending me the rest of Billy Rose's 1927 lyrics, sung to music by Al Jolson and Dave Dreyer. Me And My Shadow Music by Al Jolson and Dave Dreyer with lyrics by Billy Rose, 1927 Shades of night are falling and I'm lonely Standing on the corner feeling blue Sweethearts out for fun, pass me one by one Guess I'll wind up like I always do, with only Me and my shadow Strolling down the avenue Me and my shadow Not another soul to tell our troubles to And when it's twelve o'clock, we climb the stair We never knock, for nobody's there Just me and my shadow All alone and feeling blue When the sun sets on the far horizon And the parlour lamps begin to glow Jim and Jack and John, put their slippers on They're all set but we're still on the go, so lonely Me and my shadow Strolling down the avenue Me and my shadow Not another soul to tell our troubles to And when it's twelve o'clock, we climb the stair We never knock, for nobody's there Just me and my shadow All alone and feeling blue |

Jonathan Wilkes) [spoken] [Robbie: (american accent)] Johnny and Robbie [Jonathon:] What you talking like that for, you're from Stoke! [Robbie:] I dunno but I can't stop here pally Like the wallpaper sticks to the wall Like the seashore clings to the sea Like you'll never get rid of your shadow You'll never get rid of me Let all the others fight and fuss Whatever happens, we've got us. (Me and my shadow) We're closer than pages that stick in a book We're closer than ripples that flow in a brook (Strolling down the avenue) Wherever you find him, you'll find me, just look Closer than a miser or the bloodhounds to Liza Me and my shadow We're closer than smog to all of L.A. He's the onie I remember singing it. But hell, between 1927, when it was written, and 1936 or so,when I heard it, LOTS of people must have sung it. So, Jolson wrote part of it,. Jolson, who sung about the south, mammy and all that, never was south of D.C. Asa Yolson should have known about steeotyping, being the son of a cantor, so why the hell didn't he NOT sing in blackface and shuffl;e around saying things like, "Yassuh Marse James, Ah sho-nuff did lak dat leftover chicken". and all that crap, Huh? See, I can be cranky if the situation calls for it. Love and kisses, Jody |
