Subject: An Excellent Midi Files Site From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 11 Dec 04 - 09:48 PM Those of you who have access to Newsgroups can get a wealth of FREE midi files from the site alt.binaries.sounds.midi. You have to ask your ISP to enable Newsgroups and by using Outlook Express, you have to subscribe to that particular group. There are people on this site from all over the world. Not only can you download free midi files but you can request specific ones and usually someone will be kind enough to send it to you gratis. There is one midi sequencer on there by the name of Gary Wachtel who sounds like a complete orchestra. He has a regular paid internet site but provides many of his best pieces free of charge on this Newsgroup site. Those of you who have AOL as your ISP may not be able to access Newsgroups but anyone else should have no problem. It is well worth checking this out. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Well that would be all of us, given Google Groups You have to ask your ISP to enable Newsgroups and by using Outlook Express, you have to subscribe to that particular group What utter nonsense! This thread is spam and should be deleted forthwith |
Subject: RE: An Excellent Midi Files Site From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 12 Dec 04 - 03:09 PM This is NOT spam. I am not trying to sell anyone anything nor do I make any money from this site. I am just giving information that I think will be helpful to my fellow Mudcatters. I am a regular member here and hate spam as much as you do. SOL ZELLER |
Subject: RE: An Excellent Midi Files Site From: Helen Date: 12 Dec 04 - 03:41 PM Thanks for the info, Sol. Just out of curiosity, wouldn't the usual copyright issues apply to the Newsgroup? If the tunes being given out are copyrighted then wouldn't the Newsgroup come up against the same problems as websites with free midis? Helen |

Subject: RE: An Excellent Midi Files Site From: Ed. Date: 12 Dec 04 - 04:15 PM nor do I make any money from this site Usenet is not a 'site' Forget it, I'll shut up |
Subject: RE: An Excellent Midi Files Site From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 12 Dec 04 - 07:23 PM I am not familiar at all with the copyright laws as they pertain to midi files, other than knowing that there is a court battle going on at present to define just what is or is not permitted. I enjoy that site for the same reason I enjoy Mudcat. Somone halfway across the globe is trying to find a song; all they remember are a few bars which they can transmit to me in a midi file, and I can identify that song for them and give them lyrics and author. It gives me a certain satisfaction to be able to do this. Often I refer them to Mudcat for the correct information and encourage them to join. It adds another dimension to what I do here. As a songwriter and performer myself, I am all for protecting copyrights. If Ed is willing to clarify what his objection is I am more than willing to discuss it here in open forum. SOL ZELLER |
Subject: RE: An Excellent Midi Files Site From: Bill D Date: 12 Dec 04 - 08:21 PM first..Rabbi Sol is NOT spamming anyone...he is noting a resource that has been available for years! How big that resource is depends on the ISP you use...mine gives me a HUGE list of 'groups', whereas a little ISP in Iowa might offer only a minimal list. newsgroups are not a 'site'...they are part of the old, original internet...which the WWW is not. There are something like 80-90 thousand 'special interest' collections of postings, sort of similar to the Mudcat forum, but which are not necessarily retained permanently. (all text postings are saved, and accessible thru the Google Groups link above...or BETTER YET, thru a dedicated "Newsreader". Outlook Express will suffice...sort of...but there are much better ways...like Forté's 'Agent' or "40tude Dialogue"... As to what is posted in places like alt.binaries.sounds.midi. or alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.folk...etc.. you have to realize that it is just as easy to post illegal material there as it is to post legal stuff, and YOU must determine how to deal with it. There are complete CDs posted in some groups, and you 'could' fill up your hard drive in one day with an unlimited account and a fast connection... But as to Rabbi Sol's note about midis....I doubt that many of those are going to be 'stolen' or illegal or complained about...it is just not a big market. |
