Heard this at Mystic last summer.
Can't find the lyrics.
Surely someone must know them.
Maybe by Rick Spencer?

Amazing place, The Mudcat Cafe. Someone answered your question over six years ago.

I copied this and it didn't come out right, I'll type it in. I'll also put in Rick's e-mail (rspencer02@snet.net)

HEXAGON ZOMBIES

1. I saw them approaching with their cases in their hands.
They had a blank look in their eyes I did not understand.
The dread was in my heart from the evil looks upon their faces
As they sat down in a circle and they opened up their cases.
"Oh, no. This can't be true," I said. They were smiling like hyenas,
And on each lap, I saw that they were holding concertinas.
The bellows wheezed. The buttons pressed. It was so surreal and queer,
No horror I had heard prepared me for the sound I'd hear.

CHORUS: Hexagon zombies, playing concertinas:
Lachenals and Jeffries, Wheatstones and Bastaris.
Hexagon zombies, they all played much too loudly.
They had no sense of timing. Their instruments were breathing.

2. In morbid fascination, I stared. I could not move. I was grounded,
Like watching a plane crash on a train wreck, and that's just how it sounded.
Jigs and reels and hornpipes played, Morris tunes as well,
Like some wheezing, groaning chorus from the deepest pits of hell.
Then all at once, the playing stopped. The din was heard no more.
One zombie took his box apart and laid the pieces on the floor,
Like a twisted body in the road. We stared at the disemboweled thing:
An amazing pile of pads and reeds, levers, valves and springs. CHORUS

3. With glassy eyes, one handed me a harmless-looking box.
He droned, "Just try it, man." It was then my soul was lost.
I felt it breathing in my hands. The buttons I did press.
It spoke, and from that moment on, my soul has not known rest.
So come all you folk musicians, now, and listen unto me:
Stay away from concertinas, or the "squeezing dead" you'll be.
Play the banjo or the dulcimer and live long and peaceful years.
The devil made concertinas to assault our gentle ears. CHORUS

Barry

I was led back to the 'cat by a google search that took me to one site whereon were mentioned 'hexagon zombie, concertina and din'. That caused me to google that and boom, there it was leading right back to where I was and am: The Mudcat. Luck, not skill. And you're welcome, Mary.

I believe it was written by Rick Spencer, though Jerry does do a fine job on it.

It was written by Rick Spencer. Jerry Bryant did record it however. I believe he played on Ricks original recording also.

Ahh, the folk process. Rick did author this gem, lyrics and tune. I remember him calling me from a rest stop on the New Jersey turnpike to read me the lyrics, having just created them on a drive south.

Then, he invited me to join him on stage at Mystic for the premier. I got to stand next to him with my squeezebox, acting the zombie part. The audience seemed to enjoy the presentation.

When he got around to recording the song Rick didn't include me. I've never understood why he made the decision to arrange it for the guitar: must have been a moment of temporary sanity on his part.

I haven't gotten around to recording it myself, though it's top of the list of tracks to include when I do another CD. I have gotten a lot of mileage out of the song, though, and am forever grateful to Rick for putting such a brilliant piece of art together.

And that's the truth...

Jerry

"The audience seemed to enjoy the presentation"

I remember that performance Jerry, are you kidding, the audience was rolling on the ground in hysterics. You do play an awfully good straight (zombie) man, so innocent.
Happy New Year

Yes, I was there. I...I...remember even though I did not realize it was the premier of the song. Lord forgive my soul.

I tried getting The Three 'Tinas to work up an arrangement of this, but we didn't have time before our latest gig. Besides, getting Bob Zentz to be deadpan for 3.5 minutes is a superhuman feat.

Barry, the secret to my straightman act that night at Mystic was that Spencer slipped a mickey of botox into my beer just before we went on -- I couldn't have cracked a smile if someone had held a gun to my head.

Charley, I *will* record the song for posterior... um, whatever. Wouldn't it be fun to do a music video of this song -- sort of a trad take on Michael Jackson's Thriller?

I'd better stop now...

Jerry

At New Harmony this year Joe Offer said the tune to this was Ghost Riders. Can anyone here who knows the song verify or debunk that?
TIA

Barbara,

Rick Spencer composed his own tune. It's definately not Ghost Rider-like. It's in a major key, just 4 chords: G, D, C and F when sung in the key of G. I'm completely unable to midi-ize or ABC the tune, I'm forced to admit.

With all the effort Rick's put into his Catfeather website, posting his artwork and all, one wishes he'd digitize this fine song and post a sample of it. Maybe he's saving that for retirement...

We should get Marc Bernier to go yell at Rick and get him to reissue the song on CD.

Jerry

Hello Mates,
Interesting to see what the folk process has done with the information related to the song.

Someone sent me this thread and I found it rather amusing. A close inspection of my website would reveal an mp3 file of the song. Go to www.catfeather.com and then to the "music room" page. Most of the page is taken up with the liner notes from the CD "Waiting for Me." If you go to the bottom of the page you'll find two mp3 files from the CD "Love's Labor" and two from the recording
"Contentment." One of them is, in fact, "Hexagon Zombies."

By the way, thanks to the many people who have given me support and encouragement during my recent health scare. All seems well at this point, although my head is much emptier than it had been.

See you all later,
rick spencer
