Subject: Tune Req: Searching for Song: ' Mother Hen'
From: GUEST,Anika from Berlin Germany

Hi,
my name is Anika and I write my thesis about the music in the film "Master and Commander". In the film there is irish folkmusic.
One of the songs in a folk medley should be called "Mother Hen".
Please, can anybody help me to find the sheet music of the melodie?

Thank you so much.

Sincerly yours

Anika

Anika, is it possible that the tune is titled 'Mother Goose'? Two of your other requests refer to tunes which are later used as children's songs. "Mother Goose' would certainly follow this theme.

Regards, John

A little searching via Google suggests that Mother Hen is -in this case- an (unusual; I hadn't come across it before) alternative title for The Irish Washerwoman (earlier, Irish Waterman?), which appears to be a descendant of the 16th/17th century English Sedany or Dargason; though there are differing opinions as to who came up with it first.

What kind of "thesis" do you mean? In English, this would commonly be understood as the written work prepared for a doctorate (PhD) but presumably that isn't the case here?

According to The Song Index of the Enoch Pratt Free Library, there is a song titled "Mother Hen" (Shaw) in Martin Shaw's Nature Songs, vol. 1, n.d. However, this may be a new composition by Shaw.

Perhaps contact the guys responsible for the soundtrack - pretty sure that's Australian player/ arranger/ composers Christopher Gordon, Iva Davies & Richard Tognetti.
