Ennunciate with a volumn straight and clear - as if performing for a live performance attempting to reach to the back corner of a 150X1500 audience (even if the room is only 15X15)It is MUCH easier to damp your down - than to attempt to pick up shit that was never there.

Hi Bob,

That is an issue of concern. Bleed from drums and other instruments.
We are trying a drum tank and the instruments are going in direct.

We hope to be able to post produce but only to a limited extent. The difference between spontaneous and live and a studio production can be blurred pretty good if we aren't careful. We just want to be able to ditch a bad note when we can.

Much has been said, but I regularly do this sort of thing for local bands and artistes. Lots of mics everywhere into seperate channels, 24 channels is not un-realistic! Then you can edit and mix to your hearts content. BUT as they say, if much of the audience goes through the band mics -mixing can be a nightmare.

At the BBC, the excess bits of tape of laughter (snipped out so the shows wouldn't run overtime) from The Goon Show would often be spliced into other BBC Radio Comedy shows!

re: Leadfinger's trick for live audience - This is a must! - well worth a few mics (Radio Mics are handy for this) then feed them into the main recording deck via a sub mixer)

- or you like in our case we always take a mini-disc recorder to festivals and record the audiences at "Big Name" shows - then add them to our "Live Tracks" later :o)

Bruce,

I stopped being nervous awhile ago. Now I am just comcerned.

The sound guy is the engineer who did our first two studio projects.
He had never done an accoustic band before so these were learning projects for him.

I believe we will have no end of fun. We always try to anyway.

Since none of us are power drinkers I can't imagine the drink will cause troubles but it is wise advice anyway.

I like the spare mic trick Lead , I'll pass it on.

Sneaky trick for a live album - Assuming you have a spare track on the desk , have at least one mic on the audience so you dont miss any of the 'good' stuff audiences do . IF its on a seperate track you can
fade it , IF its just on what YOUR mics pick up , you cant enhance it !

Hi Don.

Just done a live recording for my new C.D. Live in Franken, Franconia
in Germany.
A huge beer hall, more than 1,000 people, direct from mixer to DAT, warts and all, after all it's what my fans want and expect.
For your fans I would aim for the sound you can produce on stage, and not for what you can do in a studio.

Don - One cheater's trick I learned a while back. Pick what you want on the CD - then that becomes your set - singular. If you need a three set night - play it three times - record all three - keep the best copy of each song/tune/whatever.

Well The Flyin' Column has thrown what ever is left of our wits to the wind and we have decided to do a live recording. Noisy saloon, noisy friends, and alchohol may be present.

We are using a first rate sound engineer with first rate equipment but there is always something we seem to miss. Any suggestions?
