Well, for those who were there and understood my predicament, I've almost got my voice back - at least I don't squeak as much.

A great weekend and thank you to those that were there. Next year may be a couple of days later due to the change of school terms.

There's loads of space for sessions in the 6 classrooms used for workshops outside the main building, and also upstairs in the main building, as well as the small rooms near the main corridor that mostly didn't get used - but people seemed to want to cram themselves into corridors near the bar - can't think why! Friday evening got through the draught beer (real ale, two sorts) by 9, but I bought bottled Newcastle brown much later. Tony who ran the bar will make sure there's some spare draught next year. Don't know about the glass washing problem - I'll see him soon and ask him about it all.

Didn't make it there myself but hear from a colleague that the beer ran out at 9.00pm on Friday and the bar was closed until Saturday evening only re-opening after the bartender had finished washing the glasses from the previous evening (I won't say where, but it wasn't in the kitchen area!!). I understand too that there was even less space for sessions than last year.

Can anyone confirm or deny this sad state of affairs as it could help me to decide what to do next year.

You and your team are to be congratulated for putting together such a quality event. Even though I couldn't be there, knowing what you've done in exposing folks to real old-time music and its magic in Gainsborough makes me glad. Kind of makes the world seem a little smaller to me...

It was tremendous. The artists did some excellent stage performances, and also proved how keen they were on jamming with any musician who came near them. Alan Jabbour is one of the world's nicest guys, and he's wlcome back to our fest any time he wants to come whether we've booked him or not. He got the Old Time string band revival on it's feet in the late 60s and he's succeeding in still keeping it there. Dave Bing felt very proud to have finally got to play a few tunes with him.
Gordy's fretless banjo playing is frighteningly good - each time through a tune he seems to play totally differently, keeping you wondering what's coming next. He's one of the few banjo players who can carry it off as a satisfying solo instrument, despite the fact that he's mostly played with great fiddlers. He also dances up a storm, and, like Alan, is a total session addict.
Last night in the Ship Dave Bing and Gerry Milnes playing twin fiddles (West Virginia crooked A tunes in G on fiddles tuned DGDG) raised what's left of my hair and put a glowing finale on to a weekend I'm going to remember for a lo-o-ong time.

The party is over and what a great time we had. Congrats to all the team from FOAOTMAD who put it together again - too many to mention but I hope Nic's cough get's better soon. Less gate duty next year maybe?

Great performances on stage - long and late sessions, super workshops and "wow" what a refurb of the ablution block! The mules were highly delighted with the individual stables provided for their comfort and the "executive" toilet and shower had to be seen to be believed.

It was brilliant as usual. See you all next year about the same time same and place - (watch the website) or maybe before at the A1 Fest. Keep playing folks that's what keeps the music alive!

I'm nipping round to Gainsborough this aft. to welcome those of our guests who've just arrived from the states - should be Gandydancer and Alan Jabbour - and maybe play a tune or two. Slightly more up to date information:

Place: Castle Hills School, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, UK
Time: from 5.30pm Friday 11th Feb. 2005 through Sunday 13th Feb., with a
Sunday evening session in the Ship Inn, Morton, Gainsborough.

Evening concerts on Friday and Saturday will start at 8pm

Artists:
Gandydancer from West Virginia, with Dave Bing and Gerry Milnes on fiddle, Ron Mullenex on banjo and mandolin and John Preston on guitar.
Alan Jabbour (founder member of Hollow Rock String Band, discoverer of Henry Reed, etc) on fiddle.
Gordy Hinners (of New Southern Ramblers and Green Grass Cloggers) on
fretless banjo and dance.
Ulf Jagfors of Stockholm on the African history of the banjo.
Dr Proctor's Antidote - a superb three piece band with some new approaches to old time music. (Fri only)
The Henhouse Allstars - excellent good time band, with an ancient sound. (Sat only)

Prices: Weekend £30 members, £35 non-members, Saturday all day £15 or £18 ,
Friday or Saturday Night concerts £10 no concessions.

Real ale bar on site, with Kelham Island beers from the small Sheffield prize-winning brewery.

Saturday and Sunday will include many different workshops on all instruments including.....

Indoor (gym) or outdoor (playing field or car park) camping is available all three nights - with free hot showers. Hot or cold food available on site except monday morning.

My ticket has arrived at the same time as my renewed membership of FOAOTMAD - good value at £15.

Last week, at our local session I secured an in depth exclusive interview with Dave Proctor. He was able to reveal his plans for the festival and gave me this detailed lowdown on the "All-Stars" and "Antidote". Looks as though we're in for good time!

Hen House All-Stars arose out of regular meetings at FOATMAD Summer and Spring Camps between Dave Proctor (fidd), Colm Daly(guitar) and Stain(Banjo)and have appeared previously at 2 Gainsborough Festivals.
In 2003, line up was supplemented with Dave Young (Mandolin) and Tim Zielonko (Double Bass) to play A1 Festival of Music and Dance

Because of the widespread location of the 5 band members, they are 'virtual' practising by CD and internet prior to final rehearsals closer to the Festival!

They appear on Saturday night at Gainsborough.

Doc Proctor's Antidote brings together Dave Proctor (Fiddle,mandolin,guitar), Jock Tyldesley (Banjo/Fiddle/Banjo Uke) and Vera Van Heeringen (Guitar,Mandolin/fiddle)

Dave and Jock played together for many years in The Bearcats – on of UK's best loved Cajun bands, where they were renowned for their inspired twin fiddling. Jock and Vera are in the current line up of another great Cajun band – The Flatville Aces.

Jocks new found love of old-time banjo and old time music has enabled him and Dave once again to 'hook up' to exploit their great musical understanding.

Look out for some unusual old time tunes, songs and even the occasional novelty tune at their Gainsborough concert spot on Friday night.

Am I right in assuming that the "Executive Suite" in the sports hall has been booked for the mule train drivers as usual and that this has had a "makeover" in your modernisation programme? The carpet was a bit threadbare last year and the mini bar was not stocked!

The 11th Gainsborough Old Time Festival
It's the weekend of the 11th - 13th of February and again we will be at Castle Hills School in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire (being refurbished, we understand) for another weekend of manic sessions, workshops, concerts and general catching up with everyone you haven't seen since last year!

Our American guests this year are Gandydancer (in a slightly revised line-up), Alan Jabbour (the leading authority on Henry Reed's fiddling) and both clogging and music from Gordy Hinners (Green Grass Clogger & fretless banjo player).

They will be joined by FOAOTMAD member and ethnologist, Ulf Jagfors, expert on the African ancestry of the banjo and Dave Proctor will be presenting two of our own best old time bands, the Hen House All Stars Big Band and Dr. Proctor's Antidote.

There's even more for cloggers with a workshop on Tennessee flatfooting by the north-east's Jennifer Tobin-Strike.

Sunday will include the Society's Annual General Meeting including election of the committee (did I hear that someone might be interested in either the role of secretary or newsletter editor?.... or perhaps it was my imagination!).
