Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Education From On High (Boyd Van Winkle) From: GUEST Date: 01 Mar 23 - 04:20 AM My uncle wrote this about a circuit preacher that came around when he was growing up. The preacher couldn't read so he had a man from the church read the Scripture for him. He wrote several other songs throughout his lifetime. He also helped J.D. Crowe learn to pick the 5-string Banjo. And The Judds will tell you that Uncle Shorty and my Grandfather, Russ Van Winkle taught them to sing harmony. |
Subject: Lyr Add: EDUCATION FROM ON HIGH (Boyd Van Winkle) From: Jim Dixon Date: 17 Aug 15 - 01:00 PM Here's my transcription from the video at YouTube, where the song is said to be sung by Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice--a bluegrass band from Ferrum, Virginia. (Thanks, guest, for the link.) Whoever posted the video confessed to not knowing the song title, but a commenter said "Education From On High." There is a song by that title on the Ramblers Choice album "Sounds of the Mountains" (1998), so I'll go with that. Repertoire.BMI.com attributes it to Shorty Van Winkle. Rambler's Choice is the only band listed there as having recorded it, but AllMusic.com says that Southern Accent also recorded it. YouTube has videos of several groups performing it, but the title is sometimes given there as EDUCATION ON HIGH. EDUCATION FROM ON HIGH Boyd "Shorty" Van Winkle As sung by Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice. CHORUS: If I could go back when I was a lad, When I'd go to church with mother and dad, The preacher would preach straight from the book. He had no education but he had what it took. 1. The preacher would preach: "Repent of your sins. Give your heart to Jesus and let the love right in. Jesus died on the cross at Calvary, And he gave his life for you and for me." CHORUS 2. Don't let education stand in your way. It won't get you to heaven on that judgment day. Give your heart to Jesus; say an honest prayer, Then you'll be ready for that meeting in the air. CHORUS |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Education up on High and/or He had what From: Jim Dixon Date: 19 Dec 04 - 12:51 PM I don't know the song, but it was a belief my father (born and raised in rural Kentucky) often expressed, that it didn't matter if a preacher had no "book learning" as long as he was properly inspired. Dad was bitter over his own lack of "book learning," and felt he was unfairly scorned by the over-educated masses. I think the song would have brought him some comfort, and I would like to see it myself. |
Subject: Lyr Req: Education up on High and/or He had what From: HiHo_Silver Date: 17 Dec 04 - 03:17 PM Looking for lyrics for a friend; Song Education Up on High or He had what it took. Chorus: If I could go back when I was a lad When I'd go to church, with mother and dad The preacher would preach, straight from the book he had no education but he had what it took. This could be bluegrass, bluegrass gospel or gospel. Thanks to all for your efforts |
