Does anyone remember a folk-rock group in the mid-to-late 1960s in the San Francisco Bay Area who played Middle Eastern instruments? I believe the lead singer played an Oudh. They were at the Berkeley Folk Festival in 1965 and had an album with a song with the lyrics:

Stand by me, you don't need to say a word
If I stumble or I fall
Or I can't see the writing on the wall
Please don't say nothin' at all.

I'd appreciate any leads. I've just about Googled myself into the ground over this.

Thanks from chanteyranger's sister.

I'm sure that someone knows the answer. I really need it. It's for a book and both my memory and Google have fallen down on the job--have pity--please help me!

would'nt mind some of his guitars and money though..

Kaleidoscope:
"They're my favorite band of all time - my ideal band." - Jimmy Page

I would have guessed Kaleidoscope, too... One of my favorites, although my favorite album of there's hasn't been re-issued on CD.

I KNEW you were out there. That's the group. Thank you so very much! I first saw them at the Berkeley Folk Festival--I think in 1965--and went nuts about them--heard them perform many times and then lost track over the years. Can you tell me anything more about Kaleidoscope and their music?

Never realized that Klezmer/Balkan musician Stu Brotman had been in the band--

also sounds like something that you might hear from
David Lindley http://www.davidlindley.com/ who, with
Henry Kaiser has recorded a couple of albums:

Mike, you know that Lindley was in Kaleidoscope, right?

Incidentally, their is a list of all the places that Kaleidoscope played at the website, and sure enough, the Berkeley Folk Festival is on the list--
