We have that song listed under another name in our database. Song titles vary - it's best to choose a distinctive phrase from the song and search for that. I searched under [not at work today], putting the words in square brackets so the search would be for the exact phrase. Click here to see what I found.

Dear Sir I write this note to you to tell you of my plight.
For at the time of writing it.. I'm not a pretty sight.
My Body is all Black and Blue... My face a deathly grey.
Iand I write this note to say why I am not at work today.

While working on the fourteenth floor some bricks I had to clear.
But tossing them down fron such a hieght was not a good idea.
The foreman wasn't very pleased he is an awkward sod...
And he said I had to cart them down the ladder in me hod.

Well Clearing all these bricks by hand it was so very slow.
So I hoisted up a barrel and secured the rope below.
But in me haist to do the job I was to blind to see;
That a Barrel full of building bricks was heavier than me.

And so when I untied the rope the Barrel Fell like lead.
And clinging tightly to the rope... I started up instead.
I shot up like a rocket but to my dismay I found...
That half way up I met the Bloody Barrel coming down.

Now the Barrel broke me shoulder as to the ground it sped.
And when I reached the top I banged the Pulley with me head.
But I clung on tightly, numb with shock from this almighty blow..
Whilel the barrel spilled out half its bricks some fourteen floors below.

Now when these bricks had fallen from the barrel to the floor.
I then out weighed the barrel and started down once more.
Still clinging tightly to the rope... Me body wracked with pain.
And half way down I met the barrel once again.

The force of this collision half way down the office block.
Caused multiple abrassions, and a nasty case of shock.
Still Clinging tightly to the rope as I fell toward the ground.
And I landed on the broken bricks the barrel scattered 'round.

As I lay there groaning on the ground I thought I'd past the worst;
But the barrel hit the pulley wheel and then the bottom burst.
A shower of bricks came down on me... I didn't have a hope.
As I lay there bleeding on the ground I let go the bloody rope.

The barrel now beeing heavier it started down once more.
And it landed right across me as I lay there on the floor.
It broke three ribs and my left arm and I can only say.

I hope you'll understand why I am not at work today.
(or WHY MURPHY'S NOT AT WORK TODAY)

The song was originally a wonderful story related by Gerard Hoffnung at The Oxford Union back in 1958 and recorded by the BBC.

Noel Murphy adapted the story into a song some time later. I am not sure who wrote this highly amusing piece?

To prevent this re-hashing much of what's already been discussed, could some mud-elf add it to the list of related threads (See e.g. Thread 2316)
Cheers
Nigel
