Anymore of this and I'll have to shave off my beard, stop drinking real ale and start wearing a base ball cap just to fit in .... what an image I've just painted .....

Actually I've just had a scary photo taken for the "Sandman" listings mag. as part of the publicity drive for the BOMFest free music festival in Barnsley.

There I was standing on the steps of Barnsley Town Hall (as you do) surrounded by the great and the good from the local music scene - indie rockers, DJs, rappers. I was feeling really "with it". A cool dude at 43 - can't be bad. After the "shoot", the journalist wandered over to me and said ...

"So, are you from the council?"

Crushed mate. That's the only word. Crushed .....

"At Last" to be a featured CD on www.TheAcousticStage.net for w/c Jan 17th.

We are pleased that "At Last" will be a "featured CD" on TheAcousticStage.net for the week commencing 17th January.

TheAcousticStage.net is a new internet-based radio station which aims to bring you the best in English & Celtic folk, old & new singer-songwriters, and much more.

Featured CDs have tracks played every couple of hours throughout the day, so over a full week Julie's songs will have around 84 plays. Other CDs featured this week are from Debra Cowan, Jolie Holland, Hekety and Chris Coe.

On their general playlist we're delighted to see Tim Moon included. Tim was one of the first radio presenters to broadcast a live performance by Julie, on his excellent show on BCB Radio in Bradford.   

It is also interesting that the playlisting of Julie Ellison, Treebeard, Hekety and Crucible means that South Yorkshire features heavily right now, especially with Hekety's "Furze Cat" being one of the featured CDs.

The station plays music around the clock with no commercials, just a station announcement or two. The broadcasts are totally free - no need to register or join anything.

Breezy - the "In Concert" badge certainly isn't intended to indicate any possibility of stuffiness, but to make the distinction between a folk club/listening audience environment as opposed to a noise and smoke filled bar.

The idea first came to me when we had two people make an effort to attend a gig at a venue which could be described as - er - lively! They left before Julie even started the set. Having only seen Julie in a theatre setting they were not expecting to see her compete with a very high level of background noise - or to have to put up with a smokey environment. Now actually, the audience at this venue (which we love playing) is filled with musicians and the audience is incredibly knowledgeable. The point being it is a music pub not a folk club.

The concert "branding" highlights the non-smoking-crisp-crunching-walking-talking-mobile-phone-ringing-in-yer-face-see-the-whites-of their-eyes gigs ... but "In Concert" fits on the flyers easier !!

Concert in our opinion is synonymous with stuffiness and suppression of instincts, and we at St Albans dissassociate ourselves with such.

Julie may well be appearing as our main guest but we are a club for performers to perform to an audience, certainly not a concert venue.

2005 Preview

Julie had a terrific 2004, far better than any of us dared hope for, and 2005 already looks busier than ever.

For those new to Julie, here is a little background:

"Julie is a terrific guitar player and she also writes great songs.

Julie has been building a reputation as a talented guitarist and singer/songwriter thanks to an extensive tour schedule in the UK, the release of an acclaimed debut solo CD "At Last", regular live broadcasts for BBC radio and international radio airplay in the USA, Canada and Australia.

Described by Arundel Festival as "One of Britain's most talented and versatile guitarists", her predominantly claw hammer-based guitar style draws from a wide range of influences from ragtime, country blues, jazz, classical, folk and rock.

Julie started playing guitar at the age of 9 and gave her first public solo performance at the age of 11. Since then she has worked in a number of folk, jazz, rock, country and indie bands as well as small theatre companies.   

As a solo artist her blend of original songs and guitar instrumentals, including innovative arrangements of guitar classics such as a ragtime version of the traditional Spanish classical piece "Romance", have earned her a reputation as an imaginative and exciting acoustic guitarist.

She has been booked at music festivals across the UK, including Cromer's Folk on the Pier Festival, Holmfirth Folk Festival, the Arundel Fringe Festival, Tenterden Folk Festival, South Shields International Guitar Festival, Broadstairs Folk Week, Reedham Ferry Folk Festival and Gainsborough Folk Festival.

Julie is keen to take acoustic music to the widest possible audience, taking advantage of the upswing in interest in acoustic music which sees her as welcome at "indie" music festivals such as "BOMFest" as she is at folk clubs.   Her list of support performances reinforces this breadth of appeal, having supported Ralph McTell, Steve Tilston, the late Isaac Guillory, New York-based Woody Mann (her personal guitar hero) and John Otway.

Julie also regularly hosts guitar workshops and master classes either as a programmed event at festivals or as a precursor to performances.
