Hi all, Just tallked to Kat's daughter. She has been at the hospital all day with Morgan (the grandson) and ran home to let Morgan run wild for a while. Since I haven't talked to her yet I don't feel free to talk about all but it does sound like there maybe complications with some meds she was taking. I'm going to try and talk to her in a couple hours and Rue said she'd call again this evening. Will let you know more when I can.

Kat's been having some med problems and any of you with BP situations that have had to go through the "adjusting the meds" thing knows how bad this can get. If you are prone to reactions or allergies to some of these things or many meds in general, this can be a trying time.....and a dangerous one as well. Say you find a med that solved the problem but when you get it to a therapeutic range, it's THEN you get the reactions. I've had meds that (on one for 5 years now as a matter of fact) that created big problems when I first started them but in the case of this one in particular the Doc reallly wanted me on it and it was a case of working through it until after almost 4 months, the reactions slowed down and the higher doses became okay. I now have almost no side effects to that one at all but at first it damn near took all I had to take it even in limited quantities.

Some meds just won't work with some people and finding the right ones in the right doses can be a long and unpleasant experience. However, a good doctor and close monitoring will keep you as safe as possible so let's all keep the good thoughts going and send a few to the Docs as well!

Hi again, Just got off the phone with Kat and Roger. She sounds week but is hanging in there. She said to tell you until they know more that she is anemic (I'm not a speller, sure that's not how it's spelled but hope you know I mean iron poor blood). They are still trying to figure things out. She feels comfortable with her doctor and the hospital. I'll be talking to again tomorrow and let you know how things are going.

Problems yes, but not life threatening. Do we go with something like a Bud or an Iron City? Someone with, say, cancer gets the Sam Adams or Guinness?   And where do the hard ciders rate? What about ales and stouts? Most importantly, what brand?

Ya' know there might be a way to make a few bucks on this thing............Healing Beer. Whaddaya' think? We bottle it ourselves!!! Mudcat Cafe Healing Beer. Maybe we can get Creflo Dollar or somebody to endorse it for a few bucks on the side. Take a 6 pack when you visit your friends in the hospital instead of those lame ass flowers. Can you imagine how much more fun it would be to visit hospitalized friends??? Maybe someone in really bad shape ya' know? You walk in and there are a hundred people in the room blasted on Black and Tans and Boilermakers!

Alright Joe.....whatever you say man..........I admit you kind of surprise me with this sudden turn into revelry and all, but....................

Iron-rich foods include raisins, meats (liver is the highest source), fish, poultry, eggs (yolk), legumes (peas and beans), and whole grain bread.

I used to think anaemic was an Irishman that only came half up your leg [don't go there!] till I met Kat. My Mother had this problem and they gave her iron tablets, that caused another problem so they gave her laxatives, but eventually it sorted itself out, and I'm sure that will happen for you Kat, you'll soon be sorted out too. Sounds like it's got to be Iron City though!

Well, Y'all, here is the news direct from Colorado, kat has a low blood pressure problem at the moment, they have taken her in for observation and there are hopes that this stay in the Hospital will be of short duration, I have spoken to kat and she is OK but Weak and very appreciative of everyones concern and looks forward to "seeing" everyone soon, I think the mere threat of a visit from me was enough Spaw!!!

beadie and Joe -- Leinenkugel. I know it's Chippewa Falls and not Milwaukee (formerly known as "Sudsville-on-the-Old-Polluted-Bathtub"). I've always preferred it to Milwaukee holy water, though at one time (as late as the '70s) you couldn't find it in Milwaukee. And this year I couldn't get back to replenish my supplies.

Getting good thoughts for anemia recovery from a steel producing town (well, it was when I was younger) seems to make a lot of sense. Steak Salad Aunty Jean's Primo Remedy for Anemia

Take a pound and a half of flank steak, slice it thin, and chase it around a frying pan in two tablespoons of olive oil. (Any oil will do, but olive is best.) with a small onion, sliced.
Shred, as much spinach as you like, with some bib lettuce. Place the lettuce on a plate, top with the steak and onions. Consume. Steak and spinach, it's so full of iron it's been known to set off metal detectors.

Heard from the girl about an hour ago and she'll be staying in the hospital a few more days until they get the stuff figured out a bit better. There are a couple of good things about that. First, it's easier to get all the testing done if you're there already.

Seriously now, have you ever ben sick and your Doc has you running all over town for days and weeks getting this test or that test or something?I've found that if you're in there they'll run tests after test, tests about tests, and tests just to fill in the time! As hospitlas can get prettty boring, this gives you something to look forward to AND you get results much sooner.

Hospitals also keep a supply of quality drugs on hand. If you ask nicely and complain about pain, you can cop a quality buzz anytime you feel like it! People often make jokes about sleeping in hospitals but just be sure you have a sleeping pill ordered anyway. I have always gotten better sleep in the joint than I get at home!

THE WORST THING IS OF COURSE BOREDOM! No problem though, just slow down the pace! I have more experience than most, but believe me you can slowly and methodically spend a complete hour eating just one orange! Eat all the meals slowly and chew well. When you order the meals the day before, always get an extra this or that and hide it so you have something to do in the middle of the night. Showers if they are allowed can be a great time waster. Carefully organizing this and that beforehand in the shower, etc.........time flies when you're bored stiff if you know what to do!

The Docs are looking at a several situations in kat's case and she LIKES her Docs which is pretty important of course. She also says the place has a great reputation and a nice staff so she's hanging in and hoping they come up with some answers soon. There may be surgery involved and there may not. Let's all just keep the good thoughts and beers going in her direction and I know the real power of the 'Cat will come through.

Floradix has a really good-tasting liquid iron supplement, it's in berry syrup, good for vegetarians. Put just a capful in a glass of dark grape juice every day and YUM! It's a little expensive though so if you like spinach and steak go for that instead. lol

Steve's mom has a FANTASTIC recipe for spinach, even the former spinach hater (me) loves it. If you want I can ask for it and PM it to you. Spinach is usually good with cheese for some reason, like in spanakopita.

My mother was found to be anemic even though she was getting plenty of iron in her diet. Her doctor had her take hydrochloric acid (betaine hydrochloride) along with an iron suplement. I tend to get dangerously anemic myself, so I also take betaine hydrochloride along with an iron suplement. I only take about a quarter of a tablet of the betain hydrochloride at a time though, because any more than that causes problems with my stomach.

Talked to the Card. & Reg. Doc.s this morning with Kat - their main concern is her heart & the CHF - they wanted to get it under better control so they can decide then next step in treating it (surgery or no surgery). She is feeling better. Her blood is staying normal. And they are try a different drug today before sending her home. She will be there another few days. She has a print out of all the posting - & loves ya'll very much. She wants to say thanks for everything.

My good and dear friends, one and all..I am gaining strength and had a good go at the doc's, yesterday. I see the cardio on the 17th and will know more then, but for now all things are stable. The good news is I am 23 lbs lighter (20 of it was water!) and 4 pints up on blood.:-) I know this is in large part due to the walking pharmacy which I have become BUT I ALSO KNOW it is because of YOU.

I have a lot more to say, but will save it for a stronger day and maybe a new thread. IN the meantime, please allow this blanket THANK YOU FROM THE DEPTHS OF MY HEART to suffice and may I beg of you a few more drams, naught fer yer livers, but fer my heart. I love the woods but these ones I'd just as soon leave behind. Please also think of Rog and Rue...they've been sore stressed, even perhaps more than m'self.

I spoke wtih kat yesterday. She says she is feeling better. She certainly sounds better. She has a follow up visit on Friday with a doctor. We will see...

Meantime, she is grateful for all the positive thoughts coming from Mudcat. I have to admit, this time she had me scared. I thought we were supposed to start off a whole New Year full of good health and prosperity???

Just a quick update while I'm feeling fit: good news from the kidney specialist...she's says they are okay and of only minor concern should it come to surgery. That is a HUGE relief. Next step is the pulmonary specialist, then the cardio to talk about having valves replaced in m' old ticker. I still hope it won't come to that, BUT I am willing if it is necessary and will improve life. Thanks, again, for all of your kindnesses, phone calls, cards, etc.

At least energy-wise, the Getaway seems it could be a real goal this year!

Thanks, again, so much, folks. Whatever you all are doing, it's working! The lung specialist just gave us a go ahead for surgery as he says all I have is sleep apnea which we can treat. This was another BIG relief.

I cannot tell you all how much it means to know you all are here. I KNOW it is making a big difference in how I cope and in keeping me on a "positive page."

I see the cardio on the 9th and we'll go from there.

Funny apnea story:
My brother woke up gasping for breath despite his mechanical aids. My sister-in-lawa thought he was having a heart attack and tried to pry off the mask and administer CPR. She was near panic when the mask came off and she realized that he was gagging not choking. Their lab was asleep on the floor next to the intake valve and performed a vicious "Spaw" directly into the air supply. So while brother continued to gag and curse, she laughed so hard she lost her breath. Careful where you place the thing.

Sins, one of my very best friends wears one of these things because his snoring can wake the dead. He has been in a hotel room next door to my room and woke me up.

One weekend a bunch of us from work went skiing at a wonderful place in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario (damn but I love Canada!!!) called Searchmont. We were having a get together in Brad's cabin, and he made the mistake of sneaking off to bed about 2:00 AM after a bunch of Union folks had been drinking copious amounts of liquor. One of the Yahoo's saw him in there with his mask on. Next thing you know, I hear giggling and laughing from the bedroom. I walk around the corner and there are these Neanderthals standing around the intake of the contraption and having ... shall we say ...... a flatulence contest. That's right, the lads were taking turns farting into the intake and then watching the reaction. Then the ladies got into it. I have always said that women are much more potent, in the flatulence area, than men. First one that ripped one off woke the boy up. I, of course, being the ultimate expression of decorum and good manners, refused to participate in this horrid activity.

Back to the matter at hand. Kat, m'love, you simply must let El Swanno and I know when we can quit drinking to your health. We are running out of Guinness. At last count 38 of the 50 states are bone dry and we are near to exhaustion.

According to the person I spoke to, by phone, our new health insurance does not have a pre-existing clause, so as long as we meet all of the pre-approved/deductible requirements, etc. everything I have done will be covered. This is a HUGE relief! This whole thing is starting to feel so inevitable; things just seem to be *clicking* into place for it all to work out for the best. I've been helping a friend host a couple of open mics in Seattle who is recovering, rather nicely I might add, from a recent surgery. (The docs found the need to correct an aneurism.) They had him up and out the door in just a few days. This sort of stuff seems to be quite routine nowadays. He was even lucky enough to have it all done for free because he qualified for some kind of program or project.

It's nice to hear that you've received so much good news from your recent visits to the various specialists.

reggie, I am honoured by your offering and those of the rest of you. Thank you sounds so trite, but it's what comes to mind...I am so grateFULL to you all.

Just an update: met with the physician's assistant, a very knowledgable young woman at the cardio's office, today. She answered a lot of questions about angiograms and the actual valve replacement surgery. She was very reassuring and understood my preference to wait until after my b-day, near the end of March, before we do anything major. We will probably do the angio the first part of March.

So far, everything remains stable although my BP has been a little elevated, so we're upping one med by 10mg, no biggie.

The extreme fear and stress of last month have abated; my activity is up slightly; and, I continue to feel positive about the whole adventure, so far. When it comes nearer to that time, I know I will have to be careful not to let the negative worry come back. I will be counting on your help with that and thank you in advance.:-)

I have an angiogram scheduled for March 1st. Sleep study for CPAP isn't until April 4th, though they are working on getting that sooner as the heart surgery will probably be before that and we want to treat the apnea before that. All things seem to be moving in an inevitable way.

Great! I'm glad that the loose ends are getting tied up. I'll tell ya what..there's a full moon coming up, and if the weather's not miserable, I'll see if I can't manage a howl myself.
There seems to be an interesting development going on these last few months. Mudcat Alternative Community Internet Support Methods. Besides well-wishing, virtual hugs, prayers and candles-commonplace stuff, we howl at the moon and drink alcoholic beverages to improve the iron content in the blood of the drinker's friend. Sometimes Spaw will offer to kick the afflicted in the balls as an act of friendship. *sniff* Now where else could you get friends like that?

One more update and then, I hope, we can let this one go for awhile.

I am scheduled for an angiogram this coming Tuesday, 1st of March. I signed consent papers, too, for any angioplasty if they find a need for it. I should also be getting my CPAP machine for the sleep apnea sometime within the week, so it seems I continue to get into the best shape I can between now and whenever we schedule the valave replacement (sometime after the end of March.)

Your thoughts, prayers, calls, cards etc. mean a great deal to me and I am so grateFULL. Mudcatters are incredible people and make the best of friends!

(We are still living out of boxes.) BUT I just found it. On some levels it reminds me of Anne Morrow Lindberg's books, and Rosalie Sorrel's mother's writing from her GRIMES CREEK in Idaho. (Both I highly recommend to you.)

Ms Kat---just know I love your book. The land lives in your hands--and you make it's colors as vivid as any reality-based lazer photo. You and Lewis and Clark are describing the same special land mass---the American West.They found it when it was more pristine---and you, by choosing to look at the beauty spots and away from the crap, like a good photographer might've chosen to teach themselves to do, have beamed your light on the beauty that still remains.

I love Anne Morrow Lindburgh's "Gift from the Sea." Haven't read the other, but certainly will. To even come close in comparison is like being in heaven!

Hiya katmyluv...........Karen is sooooo jealous. She did the Sleep Study and in the process got a chance to try the masks and she really liked them. The results of the tests though showed she was only borderline. She was so sad!!! Like saying, "Gee, why can't I be worse because I like the medicine!!!"

Bad news here.........Cleigh O'Possum seems to have gone walkabout. The Little Pissant is very angry and has gone out in search of his shelf mate and friend. Cleigh was extremely depressed and the fault of the whole thing is Little Hawk's. He had decided to chide me a little for posting less on THIS THREAD. AS you can see, poor Cleigh was extremely upset. I have quit posting anything on any thread that Hawk has much to do with. To be so unkind as he was to Cleigh.........I just want to kick his ass.

Regarding Cleigh O'Possum, I think this whole thing is being blown out of proportion. Just because Cleigh suffers from a hole-ier than thou condition and got blown away by my casual remarks is no reason to pander to his unholesome tendency to indulge in emotional blackmail and hold Mudcat Cafe hostage to his fragile ego problems. No indeed. The whole thing is too silly for words in my opinion. That's why I'm going on and on about it.

Don't let it burden you, Kat. Cleigh will bounce back from this little episode just fine. By the way, I printed out a picture of the Little Pissant and put it up on the "peeing post" outside the back door. All 3 of our dachshunds have been christening it at regular intervals ever since, and it's looking more in character all the time.

Thanks, Bobertdarlin'. I did check on them and they are really cheap right now, but I am even cheaper, at the moment. Even with the first health insurance I've had in over 5 years, our deductibles and copays are still kinda high, though the heart surgery etc. are covered; no pre-existing clause!!

Will be thinking of you! Tom says the worst part is after the angiogram -- having to be immobile and flat on your back (head not elevated more than I think 10%) for 6 hours. Drove him nuts. Everything else will be a snap. And the CPAP will make quite a difference.

And you'll feel like a new person after the valve job.

If any of you would like to join me, please surround me with a metaphorical "pink blanket of love" esp. the 30 minutes before surgery. I am to be at hospital by 9a MST and surgery will be at 1030a (That's 1230p Mudcat time. We are two hours behind Mudcat.)

Just spoke to the cath lab nurse. She was very reassuring. (I DO feel quite nervous, but have some xanax to take the edge off.:-) Anyway, she said I will have to lie flat for one hour after, then up for a short walk to see how the incision does, then another two hours of lying down, BUT she also said I can elevate my head up to 45% AND have a pillow under my left leg, so that will help with my lower back pain. That's the only pain I remember from the last one of these i had in 1979. I will also be able to eat after, too!*BG*

With your help and the hand-holding from the docs and hospital I feel much more confident and calm than before now. This feels like a mini-trial run for valve surgery.:-)

No worries, gnu. The relationship wasn't exactly plastered all over and I appreciate your concern, as well as vega's levity!**bg** I think it was El Swanno (Dave Swan) who first started joking about my needing a "tune-up."

Anyway, here I am...I survived and it wasn't nearly as awful as the first one 25 years ago. I wished I'd asked for a pain pill for last night, though!

I really was amazed. They let me take my own pillow into OR, put a pillow under my left leg, so my lower back didn't completely twig out. I went into OR at 1030a, they draped me and all, then the doc started in about 11a. I was back in my room at 1230p; up walking at 2p and left for home at 230p! Wonderful staff, answered all of my questions, made sure I had pain meds while there, and just now called to see how I did overnight at home.

I am a mass of bruises on my left leg and groin and it hurts like hell, but still something which will be short-lived and I can deal with it. Almost worse are the two burns on my chest. Apparently, sometimes when they *tickle* your heart with the catheters in there, it causes a slight fibrilation. I found out later, they had wet patches of material on my chest to conduct electric shock in that event. Because of my fair skin, it burnt when they did, so Thank Goodness for aloe vera gel!:-)

I was calm enough going in that I was able to sing a couple of calming songs to myself just before and also do some visualisation. That I was able to do so is amazing to me. I've always been too nervous before.( They did give me a low dose of xanax which helped,too!) I could *feel* all of you there with me and saw that beautiful pink glow surrounding. Had fun telling the doc that I had friends wearing pink undies in honour of my heart day! Turns out a friend here in town, who didn't know about Alba and others wearing pink, just happened to have her pink undies on yesterday, too!

One of the most significant moments for me was right afterwards, still on the table in OR, thinking to myself, I can manage heart surgery and I'll be okay. First time that has felt really, really true to me and I am grateful.

The doc got called away on an emergency just as we'd started talking about the results, so I expect to talk to him some more, today, but the bottom line is yes, they do need to replace the aortic valve. More on that as we get to it.

Great to hear there was no need for angioplasty-- should also mean the blood vessels will be nice for stitching, later, too!

Great also to know that you have found an assurance that the upcoming surgery will be handle-able. Of course WE know you can do it, but it's nice that YOU know it now too! :~)

Isn't it great to have that knowledge of how well your body works, there, too-- I mean, an awareness of wellbeing in an area that has caused some concern-- a realization that it has dependability????? I recall having has a cardiac ultrasound, and they let me watch the monitor. I was really scared I had let myself go badly in that area, but there was my heart, working away steadily and automatically, and it looked like it was blowing kisses at me with every beat. And I thought, damn, that is cool, to be able to see that now and (in memory) later-- that image of intrinsic strength, goodness, and wellness?!?!?!

Ya know, Spawdarlin', from this past week I think I am getting the hang of it and up there on top of that big ol' pachyderm doesn't seem near as scary as before!

I have met with the cardiac surgeon, as of today, and I really like him and trust him. Personable, upfront, honest, didn't make me feel rushed; answered all of our questions; thorough AND, following in Spaw's footsteps, it seems I am interesting enough that they've all been talking about me over the past few weeks! I can just see a bunch of docs rubbing their hands in glee, grinning and debating the ins and outs of my system!

Seriously, it feels as though my Dream Team has fallen into place and it is good. I have two more tests (renal and aortic MRAs), then a meeting with another specialist, in the ever-striving to get all of the ducks in a row, or should it be whiskers **bg**; then, I meet with the surgeon again, on the 24th, to look at those results and schedule the surgery. I'll keep ya'll posted and thanks so much. I feel so supported and strong when going through all of this prelim stuff and I feel fine about the surgery, thanks in large part to you all!

Oh, kat ol' kid...
A few years, decades now, back, I had a great big thingee in my throat removed, and they took out this and that in there. What gave me great peace of mind, before I went in, was the thought that to the doctors, this was a mundane as driving a bus... they do it every day, but with real care and dedication.
All will be well, and so will you.

Thanks, Jeri, I will do just that. It was kind of a shock to see this after so long. I didn't realise it ended so abruptly, two months before the surgery.

My thanks to InOBU and Al and den. As you can *see*, I did okay!
