Subject: Leadbelly song in 'The Aviator' From: Cool Beans Date: 28 Dec 04 - 01:22 PM If you stay all the way through the final credits of the movie "The Aviator" there's a song by Leadbelly about Howard Hughes and his record-setting flight around the world. I never knew such a song existed but that's definitely Leadbelly singing. He and Alan Lomax are credited as the writers. (I stay for credits.) Also, playing nightclub singers (and actually singing) in the movie are three Wainwrights: Loudon, Rufus and Martha. This is not a recommendatation for the movie. I think I'll buy the CD, though. |
Subject: RE: Leadbelly song in 'The Aviator' From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 28 Dec 04 - 03:05 PM From an interview by Martin Scorsese, who made the film:"And music. Leadbelly. If you sit through all the credits after The Aviator, at the end we play a song written and performed by Leadbelly: `Get up in the morning, put on your shoes, read about Howard Hughes.'... Leadbelly wrote that." Apparently Scorsese likes Leadbelly a lot. Maybe he might make a film about him some time... |

Subject: RE: Leadbelly song in 'The Aviator' From: GUEST,Les B. Date: 14 Feb 05 - 05:23 PM I just saw the Aviator the other evening and am now sorry I didn't sit through the credits. Didn't Leadbelly also write about the Titanic? He must have had a historic muse. What really fascinated me in Aviator was the gyrations that one of the night club singers was going through on stage. It was really over the top sort of stuff. Does anyone know if that is based on how singers did things back then ?? |
Subject: RE: Leadbelly song in 'The Aviator' From: Little Hawk Date: 14 Feb 05 - 05:47 PM The movie was superb. It could hardly have been any better. |
Subject: RE: Leadbelly song in 'The Aviator' From: GUEST,Art Thieme Date: 14 Feb 05 - 07:41 PM That earlier film about Leadbelly really was not good at all. They really ought to've had Huddie himself on the soundtrack. The guitar picker they used was not even close to the man's style, and his unique guitar style was close to two thirds of what he did I've always thought. Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: Leadbelly song in 'The Aviator' From: LuteMonkey Date: 15 Feb 05 - 02:40 AM Whatever you do, beware his (Leadbelly's) bio. It came out when I was in college, which was 1992 or therabouts. "The Life and Times of Leadbelly". It's insipid and chronologically disjunct. I have it stored away somewhere. I will send it anywhere for free to spare anyone the cost of such crap. Matt |
Subject: RE: Leadbelly song in 'The Aviator' From: Mark Ross Date: 15 Feb 05 - 10:46 AM Art, Actually, I think Mike Cooney did some of the guitar work for that film. The problem wasn't so much the direction(Gordon Parks) but the fact that the studio was in the middle of a regime change so the money was cut back for both the production and the publicity. Any one out there in Mudcat Land familiar with Blind Eric Flatpick's HOWARD HUGHES BLUES? "If I had a million dollars just like Howard Hughes, I would have me any woman that I might choose, I would even buy Chicago just so I could have the blues, If I had a million dollars just like Howard Hughes." Subject: RE: Leadbelly song in 'The Aviator' From: Cool Beans Date: 15 Feb 05 - 11:59 AM And remember Jim Croce's line from his "Working in the Car Wash Blues" Working at this end of Niagara Falls Is an undiscovered Howard Hughes. |
Subject: RE: Leadbelly song in 'The Aviator' From: mindblaster Date: 15 Feb 05 - 12:07 PM This was an excellent film. Yes I listened to the music at the end. By the way I downloaded the film free (and illegal ha!) from Loki Torrent just before MPAA closed it down. |
Subject: RE: Leadbelly song in 'The Aviator' From: GUEST,Curious Date: 15 Feb 05 - 04:07 PM LyteMonkey: Any suggestions on what might be a good biography of Leadbelly?? |
Subject: RE: Leadbelly song in 'The Aviator' From: Cool Beans Date: 15 Feb 05 - 04:51 PM I disagree with LuteMonkey. I found "The Life and Legend of Leadbelly," by Charles Wolfe and Kip Lornell, to be quite good. |
Subject: RE: Leadbelly song in 'The Aviator' From: GUEST,Art Thieme Date: 15 Feb 05 - 05:06 PM Wolf and Lornell said that his first name was HUDSON. To me that's outrageous--not to mention silly. Art |
Subject: RE: Leadbelly song in 'The Aviator' From: LuteMonkey Date: 15 Feb 05 - 10:18 PM I don't know of any other bio on him. I should actually re-read it. I am always changing my mind upon second glances. I just remeber questionable facts (like Art pointed out) and gratuitous hyperbole. I was younger then... |
Subject: RE: Leadbelly song in 'The Aviator' From: GUEST,Art Thieme Date: 16 Feb 05 - 12:04 AM I once told Michael Cooney that he should've done the music for the film if his amazing version of Leadbelly's "Fannin Street" was any indication of how he might do all of Leadbelly's songs. He said, "No, there is someone who does it much better."------ But I can't remember who he mentioned. Either way, Mark, it wasn't M.C. doing it in the film. For some reason I think of Dick Rosmini---but I'm probably wrong. Art |
Subject: RE: Leadbelly song in 'The Aviator' From: GUEST,Mr. Greggg Date: 23 Apr 05 - 04:17 AM Yeah, its a good song...after the first three or four times! After that it gets real old, real quick. I must say though, it had to be the most interesting music I've ever had the pleasure of listening to while cleaning out theaters. |

Subject: RE: Leadbelly song in 'The Aviator' From: Tannywheeler Date: 24 Aug 05 - 01:01 PM Daddy (John Henry Faulk) did some scenes for the Leadbelly movie as a southern (Texan?) gov. He was very disappointed in the script/theme/setup of the movie--not the people he worked with. He said it was inaccurate racial propaganda; he said Leadbelly had an interesting life, sometimes horrific, and some of the most interesting, inspiring aspects of his personality were ignored. He was sorry it had happened. Tw P.S. Looks like I'm gonna have to see Aviator. |
