Subject: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 28 Dec 04 - 10:45 PM Something to look forward to. I am having root canal done tomorrow on a rear top molar tooth. My wife (scanner) just finished up one last week with the same specialist. This guy is very good. He is an old timer who works himself with no assistants or nurses. He has a light touch and a very friendly chairside manner. What I like best is that he works on you the old fashioned way, in a sitting up position. All the young dentists today put you in a prone position with your feet higher than your head. I do not like that because you can gag on the water of the drill. I will let you know tomorrow evening how everything went. It is going to be 3 visits. There are 3 nerves in a molar tooth and he does one per visit. He charges $900 and then you have to go back to your regular dentist to restore the tooth. That is an additional $400. I will ask for a shot of novocaine in my wallet where it is going to hurt the most. SOL ZELLER |

Subject: RE: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: Bill D Date: 28 Dec 04 - 10:56 PM yeah...my dentist wants ME to consider one. I have no objection to dentistry, but the $1000+ is daunting, especially when my other teeth are not real good (soft enamel)...if I will need dentures one of these years, maybe I'd better save toward that! |
Subject: RE: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 28 Dec 04 - 11:05 PM Bill, If you do not do the root canal the tooth can abscess and then you are talking extraction or surgery. That is even more expensive. I will stick with the root canal. SOL |
Subject: RE: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: Kaleea Date: 28 Dec 04 - 11:14 PM When I was a kid, the dentist we went to was quite a pip. Humming away, he'd get all of his metal contraptions holding your mouth open so that you couldn't enunciate a word--then ask "How do you like my singing?" |
Subject: RE: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: maire-aine Date: 28 Dec 04 - 11:24 PM Good luck, Rabbi-Sol. I've had three so far, and it's not the worst thing in the world. When I had the first one, my tooth was hurting so badly that the root canal was a relief. The last one was in my "eye tooth" and I haven't had a sinus infection since it was done. Maryanne |
Subject: RE: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: Peace Date: 29 Dec 04 - 01:43 AM You have my sympathy, Sol. I have had four in my life--all in the same sitting. Yippee. |

Subject: RE: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: jacqui.c Date: 29 Dec 04 - 04:00 AM Make sure that you get anti-biotics. These things are notorious for starting infections. i had it done three times and each time it set up an infection - third time I had the prescription and got on to the meds faster. |
Subject: RE: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: PoppaGator Date: 29 Dec 04 - 10:13 AM After hearing for many years about the horrors of the root canal, when I finally needed and received one of my own, I discovered that it's not the procedure that's so painful -- it's *needing* a root canal that really hurts. Getting the dental work done is a relief. |
Subject: RE: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: Flash Company Date: 29 Dec 04 - 10:32 AM I had one in a front tooth a few years back, it had flared up when I wss on holiday, and the local doctor gave me a course of antibiotics and said 'See your dentist when you get home, it will have to come out , of course.' Happily, Clare had other ideas, otherwise I might have ended up leading The Pogues. FC |
Subject: RE: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: Cool Beans Date: 29 Dec 04 - 11:58 AM Rabbi Sol, Good luck. I've had three, I think, and the accursed shot was worse than the root canal itself. Anyway, there's something to be said for soft comfort foods: mashed potatoes, applesauce. Be well. CB |
Subject: RE: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: beadie Date: 29 Dec 04 - 12:23 PM Rabbi: I've had several. In fact, I recently had to have one that was done about 20 years ago re-done (the gutta-percha that they fill the empty canal with had shrunk over time and a bit of bacteria were migrating south into the underlying bone). No anaesthesia necessary, but he still charged 750 bucks and required my primary dentist to finish the job. |
Subject: RE: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: CarolC Date: 29 Dec 04 - 02:28 PM Good luck with the root canal, Rabbi Sol. Ask for extra novacaine in your mouth too if you need it. I did and it made the experience a lot less painful. I've had two root canals, and I have mixed feelings about their long term benefits, but most people are very happy with them in the long run. |
Subject: RE: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: Rapparee Date: 29 Dec 04 - 03:07 PM I've had at least 5 in the last three years, the last one about three weeks ago -- and I go to the dentist tomorrow for the permanent filling. Way, way too many. But then I was 20+ years without a problem before that. Get the lidocaine, and if you want, ask for nitrous oxide. Then take the rest of the day off. |
Subject: RE: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: jimmyt Date: 29 Dec 04 - 03:35 PM I have had 4 root canals done on me, and I have performed three so far today. ROot canals are much simpler, more predictable, less painful, etc than they were 20 years ago. The technology has made it so straight forward I occasionally do them if need be, as I am performing other work and have done many on the house rather than drop a big additional expense on the patient. Of course you need adequate lidocaine, Nitrous oxide if you are aprehensive ( which you do not seem to be), Antibiotics only if they are necessary, and once the root canal is completed, you will need to get the tooth restored (which isn't she same procedure as the root canal- endodontics) On most postertior terth, a crown is indicated. On anterior teeth, many times just a filling is adequate. Hope you have a pleasent-as-it-can- be experience. SOunds like you have a good dentist you trust. |

Subject: RE: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: Biskit Date: 29 Dec 04 - 04:00 PM The only advice I can give is from personal experience,..after a near fatal motorcycle crash (one of many) Ha! I had a lot of dental work done including root canals. I spent thousands on oral surgeons, then I met an old navy dentist (Doc)T.C.Davis god Bless'm,.. he told me it was the noise, and the unknown that made it hurt, and he gave me a mirror and I watched him do the root canal. He was right, though it wasn't painless, it didn't hurt near as badly, and I saved a wad-o-money not using oral surgeons anymore. For what it's worth, ~Biskit~ (p.s.) Hi Praise! er,..wysiwyg |
Subject: RE: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: Rapparee Date: 29 Dec 04 - 04:13 PM Jimmyt, you didn't do those on yourself, did you? I once bought a wood router and the label said, "Not to be used for medical or dental procedures." Well, I hadn't considered such thing before, but with that and my 1/2 inch drill and a mirror I could save myself tons of money, I betcha. |
Subject: RE: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: Morticia Date: 29 Dec 04 - 04:20 PM piece o'cake, mate.........had two, latest last xmas, both to treat an abcess that came up, then came back again a year later. I'd never had a filling before, never had any dental treatment before other than getting my wisdom teeth out ( yes, I know, explains a lot).....didn't think the filling bit was much fun, never having had one before.....the root canal work was a cinch though.Good luck but I'm sure it will be fine! |
Subject: RE: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: jimmyt Date: 29 Dec 04 - 04:23 PM NO I did not do my own root canal, but I am sure it would be pretty straight forward to do it. as long as it was a front teeth, I would do it in a min just to get on TV. I did do my own crown preparation and impression and it was performed in 1982 and has been perfect ever since. |
Subject: RE: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: GUEST Date: 29 Dec 04 - 05:56 PM Had a couple done, no problem at all. On the other hand the way my rather attractive young lady dentist clasps her patients' heads to her bosom while working does distract very slightly from what is going on inside the mouth. |
Subject: RE: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: GUEST,heric Date: 29 Dec 04 - 06:06 PM Hundreds of thousands of people have just lost their children, familes, their entire communities, and all of their worldly possessions, in a few brief minutes. But I am sorry that your root canals are a bit expensive, Sol. |
Subject: RE: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: Nancy King Date: 29 Dec 04 - 06:20 PM I've had several root canals -- the exact count eludes me. Some were worse than others, though the most recent ones haven't been so bad. The worst part is the dreading beforehand. Rapaire is right about taking the rest of the day off. You might feel OK immediately after the procedure, but when the anesthetic wears off, things get a bit sore. Applesauce, cottage cheese, soup, custard (yum!) are all good bets. Hope you're feeling better by now, Sol! Nancy |
Subject: RE: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: number 6 Date: 29 Dec 04 - 06:32 PM When we lived in Toronto we had one of those 'old timey' dentists. Really like him. As fo the novacaine in the wallet, I am grateful for having a good job with benefits. Must say I have never required root canal, and hope I never will. |

Subject: RE: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 29 Dec 04 - 07:35 PM Well, I am back from the procedure and am happy to report that all went well. Dr. Lenny Chiat of New City (Rockland County), NY is the most pleasant, professional and painless Endodondist (root canal specialist) that you would ever want to work on you. He is a very warm and caring human being as well. The first of 3 procedures lasted a full 2 hours. He said that I would not need antibiotics because the nerves were still alive and there was no evidence of abscessing or infection. However I caught this condition just in time because the cavity, which was under an existing filling had already penetrated into the nerve canal. For our resident dentist, jimmyt, it was the number 3 tooth. He took out parts of all 3 nerves. On the next visit he will clean out the remainder of the nerve tissue and look to see if by any chance there might be a 4th nerve. Some molars do have them. On the 3rd visit he will fill the canal with rubber. The novocaine is just about wearing off now and I feel very little pain if any. He gave me a prescription for Tylenol 3 with Codeine in case I should need it. However I think I will be able to get away with just regular extra strength Tylenol. I really do not want to take any narcotic unless it is absolutely necessary. I will keep you all updated on how I feel. Thanks for your concern and prayers. SOL ZELLER |

Subject: RE: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 29 Dec 04 - 11:10 PM It is 11:05 PM. The novocaine wore off long ago and I was able to eat dinner. Still no significant pain. Only a little soreness. At this rate I won't even need the regular Tylenol. SOL ZELLER |
Subject: RE: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: Sorcha Date: 29 Dec 04 - 11:31 PM Jays, Rebbe! My dentist charges $600 and it's all done in ONE sitting. He does his own lab work and you leave w/o needing a follow up unless you have probs....crowns too! Git yer ass out here! |

Subject: RE: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: kendall Date: 31 Dec 04 - 02:34 AM Very interesting. My dentist wants to do a root canal on me, and I've given it a lot of thought. I had one done 25 years ago and never had such pain! What I have read here is encouraging though. |
Subject: RE: BS: Having Root Canal Tomorrow From: Rapparee Date: 31 Dec 04 - 10:04 AM A lot has changed in a quarter century, Kendall. Nowadays them dentists don't even give you a bullet ta bite on -- they just prick you with a needle, shoot in some stuff, and before you know it you're drooling on your bib. If you're nervous, ask 'em for nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or extract of cannibis. They generally have the NO. Actually, yesterday I had the prep work done to replace the crown on the root canal I had about 3 weeks back. I laid back in the chair and went to sleep (I can do that) while they worked on me -- there was a TV in the ceiling, but ESPN ain't my gig. The lidocaine wore off in a few hours and I was left with soreness, but no pain. I go back in a couple weeks to have the permanent crown put on. This was on #19, and yes, there were four nerves. |
