I was channel surfing thru Cable TV last night & caught a five year old tribute to Brian Wilson. Like most things, some of it was good, some mediocre & a couple of performances were brilliant.

But the question I have is about Paul Simon. He did an early slot doing a mainly acoustic version of "Surfer Girl" & I was struck by the lovely tone from the 6 string he was playing. No brand name visible & I was wondering if anyone knows what brand (or hand made) guitar he usually plays?

One thing that is for sure. When he wants to, he plays a mean finger pick style.

Paul Simon always used to play a Black Gibson Jumbo. Do you have a photo of the Headstock?

He also had a Gurian. Tried one once, from the 70s, the best sounding guitar I ever played, even tho the bridge area of the soundboard had warped upwards. It was for sale, used to be Eric Bibb(?)'s and was superb, but I shied away from it in case that warp got worse....

There's this page. If that is the same guitar, it looks like a black Gibson J-200, similar to the Everley Brothers model they put out. Hard to see any detail on the headstock, but it could also be a Guild I suppose. But my money is on it being a Gibson. And, yes, the good Gibson guitars always had a unique sound especially preferred by the singer/songwriter types of Simon's day.

Paul Simon also often played a Martin (especially with Garfunkel), not one of the big dreadnoughts, but a smaller deep-waisted OM style.

I think Simon,in addition to the Martin OM he plays, has for a long time used a custom Yamaha;jumbo-sized,black with rectangular pickguards on both sides of the soundhole.......in Canada,Murray McLaughlin and Sylvia Tyson also play them, theirs have white pickguards.......only three I've ever seen;I've heard McLaughlin's and it's very impressive.......I think they were only a special-order item some years ago..........

Cluin

The Gibson Everly Bros. model is equivelant to the J-185 which is a bit smaller in the lower bout.

Yeah, that's right, MG. I'd forgotten that the Everley Bros. model were 185s.

And I can see now that the picture I linked to above shows Paul Simon playing a Yamaha. My buddy has the same guitar, but in a natural blonde finish with only the lower pickguard. I was jamming on it tonight at his place (practice for a gig with him Saturday night); nice guitar.
