Has anyone any ideas how the folk/roots music scene in the UK midlands could fund-raise for the relief efforts in south east asia??

I'm willing and able to help - but it needs to be done as soon as possible!

All suggestions welcome!

No suggestions for short-term/instant fund raising but I'm more than happy to help out in any way I can.

I think the best help we can give at the moment is instant donations. Concerts etc take a lot of time to set up and advertise.Long term relief will be needed later and that's when concerts etc could help.

Spot - adverts have been on the TV tonight. If you want to give directly, you can pay by debit/credit card. cheque, or across the counter at banks or Post office Down here in the South East someone is already organising a barn dance at Farnham Maltings on Sunday 2nd January in aid of disaster funds, details as follows:

Asian Earthquake and Flood Appeal

A month ago we returned from Malaysia with our daughter Daisy who had been working on Pulau Payar, a small island situated between the islands of Langkawi and Penang. Both these islands, where we stayed for some time, suffered severe casualties in yesterday's flood. Whist we were in Malaysia we were overwhelmed by the friendship and hospitality shown to us by the Malay people. We would like to be able to help them in some way.

To this end we are holding a Barn Dance on Sunday 2nd January 2005 at The Memorial Hall, West Street, Farnham, from 8.00pm until 11.30pm Tickets;- £6.00, but it would be great if you gave more! There will be a raffle.

Private charities will spend their reserve money right now. Eventually, it must be replaced. So yes, concerts are a great idea in the long run.

Its strikes me that the big charities and each country currently have things working to hopefully do their very best at this moment in time.
I think everybody has to be careful how they channel their money, otherwise it will just go to waste.

I would certainly be willing to organise something in the Lincolnshire area at a later date, once it is clear what is needed.

So any BIG artists who would like to offer their services please pm me.

I would probably run it at the Festival Hall in Market Rasen, which can take about 400 people and has a bar and parking.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I, probably like most of you, have donated some cash to the relief fund, but feel that a concert, or even a series of concerts, perhaps in the spring, when the media coverage has died down but the need will still be paramount, would be a great idea.

So has anyone any ideas for venues? I'm sure we'll have no shortage of offers from folks offering to play - the more the merrier!!

The services I can offer are performing and promotion (web page, posters, press releases etc)

What can other people offer?

We will be having a fund raising concert and possibly a ceilidh as well at the end of the month here in Gainsborough. We began our fundraising last night at Gainsborough Folk Club when many of us donated our naffest Christmas presents which will be part of a bad taste raffle at the concert. A certain Zany Mouse was so eager to own one of these outrageous items that she made an instant cash donation to start our fund off. (Thanks Rhiannon)
All of the charities involved will certainly need their coffers replenishing as soon as possible, so anything we can do will help those in need. Why wait!?
More details of the gig when arrangements are finalised.

I don't need to do anything then as I will attach myself to the Gainsborough fund raising.

Barry,
Ted and I have been discussing putting on a concert in Donisthorpe. Your name was mentioned when we talked about it...before this thread!
It can't be too soon because it needs publicising well, but I don't think the need for money is going to go away very soon. It's late so I won't go any further into this now...Ted will probably post more since he has some ideas. We'll be in touch

Love Lynne

If you go to http://www.covfolk.co.uk you'll see details of a fund raising concert, songaround and barbecue at Brinklow on Saturday 8th January organised by Pete Willow.

I'm looking forward to Sooz' fundraiser in Gainsborough.

Best regards

Barry - I'm trying desperately to think of a venue into which we can blag our way - if I go ahead and put anything together, I am not prepared to pay for room, bar or anything - all the money must go to the tsunami relief operation. The Green Man is too small - we need somewhere where we can fit a lot of people.

The other big problem with a venue is that it needs a bar - we don't have time to mess around applying for a licence. So far, I have a couple of thoughts - maybe the Venture Theatre in Ashby de la Zouch, or DM's in Donisthorpe. Otherwise, we could try the Church Hall with a raffle for the bar - buy a ticket and every one wins something.

If we can get a venue, there are several bands we can approach - depends on their commitments. If you have any thoughts I would be delighted to hear them - get some life out of the NW Leics desert!

Why do you need a bar?
If you use a village hall or similar everyone could bring their own drinks which is quite legal and some people even prefer it!

Some good thoughts coming up here!!

If we can't find one large venue, why not do several small ones, which will give loads of different bands an opportunity to play.

Ted, I know the Green Man at Clifton is small, though we could get 80+ in at a push - and the room would definately be free!!

I know the Royal in Ashby, but am not familiar with other venues!

We (rhyzome) will play anywhere/anytime providing we have no other commitments (see our gigs page here )

Let me know what you think, or pm me!

Barry

Here at the Castle Hills Community Arts College in Gainsborough we are promoting a concert on Wednesday 26th January at 8pm. Admission is £6 for adults and £3 for children.
Julie Ellison and Winter Wilson have allowed their arms to be twisted and have agreed to perform without a fee so every ticket we sell will mean dosh for the far east. (Probably via the Red Cross although we haven't decided yet)
I can promise that we will all thoroughly enjoy helping people so much less fortunate than ourselves.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Coventry Bands to Record Charity song for Tsunami Victims Coventry, UK, 28th December 2004 — : Musicians and Bands from around Coventry and the West Midlands are to record a single to raise money for victims of the Tsunamis that hit South East Asia earlier this week. The song, 'Stand Together' Click here to listen, written by Coventry based singer/songwriter Rob Halligan, was originally penned after the September 11th attacks on New York in which his father died. Says Rob, "Stand Together is a song about hope and about rising up out of a bad situation – about pulling together to make a difference."
Tens of thousands have been killed and millions displaced in the worlds worst earthquake for over 40 years and there is an urgent need for aid. In response J10 Studios in Coventry have offered recording time and a number of local bands have pledged support in a local level 'Band-Aid' style project. Contact Rob about this project

www.halligan.tk - i also am blue clicky impaired. Rob is a really sound bloke - I used to work for him when I lived in Cov.

My band "Puzzlejug" will be participating in a charity concert to raise money for the disaster fund. It is at Fairford Palmer Hall, Gloucestershire, on Friday 21st January. Apart from us, there will be a C & W duo but I don't know what other turns are on. Info from Peter n 01242-516134 or Barry on 01285-712347.
