After nine years (don't ask), I finally got a computer microphone which I can use to record my voice.

I also recently discovered that this computer did, in fact, come with "Windows Movie Maker" installed (I do not, however, have a camera yet; I'm not really a luddite-- just a make-doer). So, to practice using both the microphone and the program, I made a video of this song (with a "slideshow" of the lyrics) and posted it to YouTube, here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VrNSY4YhjA

In the process, I discovered that it worked better with three choruses instead of five. I also discovered that singing out loud is harder than I remembered (and harder than singing in your head).

Still, I thought I'd share the sound of this song, anyway (and wish my fellow 'Catters a Jolly New Year).

This song is a year old, today. Although it's not new anymore, the sentiment in my heart is renewed. So I want to renew the thread, and send you all my best wishes for a loving and prosperous 2006!

So -- I decided to write that extra verse, after all. If, later, I feel it makes the song too "stuffed and heavy," I can choose leave it out.

Here is the 6-verse song as it stands, now: I'm pleased with it:

This year is quickly fading in the night
With all the joys and sorrows that we knew.
A new year comes, with promises so bright.
And so, with hope, I give this gift to you.

I give this gift to you: a simple little thing.
And yet, I hope you feel the love that I've tied up with string.

There is a new light shining in the dark,
As fragile as a candle in the snow.
Yet one small flame can light ten thousand sparks;
When passed from hand to hand, the Light will grow.

I give this gift to you: a simple little thing.
And yet, I hope you feel the love that I've tied up with string.

It's easy, in the dark, to feel forlorn,
And lock my heart against the storms of Fate,
And dwell upon the sorrows I have borne,
Forgetting you, my friend, outside my gate.

You give this gift to me, a simple little thing
Yet, most of all, I feel the love that you've tied up with string.

So when I fear the cold and darkness, too,
And sorrows seem to gather 'round my door,
I'll open up my heart to love from you
And it shall light my way forevermore.

You give this gift to me, a simple little thing
Yet, most of all, I feel the love that you've tied up with string.

So hang your shining garland in the hall,
And let your candle burn against the night,
And celebrate the gifts from one and all:
Each tied with string, and wrapped in paper bright.

And so, we give our gifts, just simple little things:
Each one a token of our love that we've tied up with string.

This year is surely fading fast away
With all the joys and sorrows that we knew.
And what the future holds, no one can say
But courage and our love will see us through.

And so, we give our gifts, just simple little things:
Each one a token of our love that we've tied up with string.

I know it's not the New Year anymore, but I was just wondering:

I start the third verse with "So when ..." as if the idea that "it is just as important to receive as to give" were obvious. But is it?

If not, I'd like to put another verse in there, to build upon that idea. But I don't want to overstuff the song if I don't have to...

Thanks in advance!

Ann

Thank you for being there to receive it Laurel!

I was getting so much joy from making my Secret Santa gift, last year, that I realized the real "reason for the season" is the presents.

So I guess an alternative title could be: "The Mudcat Secret Santa Song" ;-)
