Subject: RE: Gibson J300 any info please From: Amos Date: 02 Oct 05 - 02:56 PM No I don't; but the evidence they were made is documented in the excerpts given above by "Martin Gibson". In the book "Gibson's Fabulous Flat Top Guitars: An Illustrated History & Guide" by Eldin Whitford, David Vinopral, & Dan Erlewine published in 1994 by GPI books, the only J300 model made by Gibson is described as follows: "Two other models, both offshoots of the basic J-200 came out of the Kalamzoo factory in that decade. The J-250R produced from about 1970 to 1978, was a standard issue J-200, but with rosewodd back and sides. As far as Epiphone goes, I have no information other than they were not part of the Gibson organization until they were purchased by Gibson in 1957. The second model, the J-300 Artist, proved a more interesting variation, although it lasted only a year after it's introduction in 1970. This striking guitar, also with rosewood sides and back, differs visually with its delicate, fleurs-de-lis gracing outside of the bridge; the lower bout of the pickguard, and the peghead. Sadly, this J-200 upgrade sold too poorly to justify it's existance." And by Cluin: Gruhn's Guide to Vintage Guitars (published 1999), which I borrowed from the library today: J-300 Artist: 17" wide rosewood back and sides J-200 bridge and pickguard fleur-de-lis peghead inlay Available: 1970-71 Sorry we don't have more to offer. Subject: RE: Gibson J300 any info please From: Amos Date: 02 Oct 05 - 03:10 PM Burntstump: There's a fellow named Cole Jackson says he owns one: "Guitars, beer, and admiration I'm a hack guitar player with cool guitars that real musicians would appreciate (deserve). My collection includes a pre-war Gibson J300, a 50's Gretsch New Yorker (my favorite) with the original Sam Ash receipt, an Anniversary Strat, and an old concert-size Epiphone Cortez that endures a beating, wrong notes, and the same old songs, without complaint. " His web page is http://colejackson.tripod.com/Ross.htm. Actually it is hard to figure out -- his name might be Ross and Cole might be his son. And their last name might be Griswald based on one of the pictures in their web site. And they seem to live currently in Singapore. Best I could do, sorry. A |

One other thing: If you remember that last scene in the film FARGO, we all thought they were caught "red handed" getting rid of the body in the wood chipper??? YES, they were getting rid of the body, but it was to cover the fact that they had also made wood chips out of the only J-300 ever in existence!! And that's where the blood came from!!!!!!!!!!!! Subject: RE: Gibson J300 any info please From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 03 Oct 05 - 09:59 AM Yes, I have one! I found it under the driver's seat of the Ferrari Testarosa I bought back in April. Don't ask how the previous owner was able to stuff a J-sized Gibson under the seat of a Ferrari. I can tell you it was very difficult to get it out. I wouldn't have bothered except that it really hurt my ass when driving over speed bumps at 120 mph. It's in remarkably good shape except for those pesky holes from the crowbar. |

Subject: RE: Gibson J300 any info please From: John Hardly Date: 03 Oct 05 - 04:27 PM Nothing fits under the seat of a Ferrari Testarosa. I you sure you didn't pull a Lloyd Loar F300 from beneath the seat? A mandolin would have to fit better. ...and those "crowbar holes" are usually referred to as "F holes". |
Subject: RE: Gibson J300 any info please From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 03 Oct 05 - 09:47 PM Nope, John, the Loar was under the passenger seat of the Maseratti I bought after I got tired of the Testarosa. Getting a Lamborghini next week. Hoping there's a Super 400 under the seat of it. |

Subject: RE: Gibson J300 any info please From: John Hardly Date: 03 Oct 05 - 10:06 PM I just gotta see the storage capacity of the car under which you store your doghouse bass. Of course, I guess if you could get your doghouse bass to fit inside a mandolin case, it too could fit neatly under the seat of your Maseratti (and transfer the Loar to beneath the driver's seat) . |

Subject: RE: Gibson J300 any info please From: Birdboy Date: 10 Oct 05 - 07:10 PM There is a former Gibson luthier who opened up his own guitar repair and restoration shop near Kalamazoo after Gibson moved south in the mid 80's. One time when I was visiting his shop in early 90's, he was working on a J300. I remember it did have the fleur-de-lis peghead inlay and it was quite striking so I asked him about it. Unfortunately I can't remember many specific details such as what wood the back @ sides were or what the fret markers were like. Some of the guitars he worked on were assembled by him from parts he got from the big Gibson moving auction. I'm not sure if the J300 he was working on was something he put together from parts or if it was a factory instrument in for repair. The guy's name is Pete Moreno and he still has his shop in a town called Oshtemo just south of Kalamazoo. Let me know if you would like his phone#. Jason |

Beautifully made, sounds great. A divorce gift to myself. |
Subject: RE: Gibson J300 any info please From: GUEST,Paul.Mel Date: 27 Dec 08 - 03:50 PM There were 40 J300's made in Early 2006. Prior to that run a one off J300 was made different to the rest in as much as it was made with a Flamed Maple Neck instead of the standard Mahogany neck, making it unique and the only one of it's kind in existence. How do I know this? Because I own that particular guitar, and very beautiful it is to. If you look hard enough you can pick up a standard J300. Well worth the search, a fabulous sounding guitar. |
Subject: RE: Gibson J300 any info please From: van lingle Date: 28 Dec 08 - 07:17 AM I played one in Bozeman out of the custom shop a few years back. It had a wagon train inlaid on it's pick guard, a cattle drive up it's neck and a locomotive on it's headstock all done in abalone, pearl and turquoise and pearl on just about every border, as I recall. It's top was adirondack, back and sides were cocobolo and it had a 50K price tag. It had a beautiful, loud and ringing tone that didn't bear much relationship to the early-60's log of a J-200 I used to own. |
Subject: RE: Gibson J300 any info please From: GUEST,farmboy Date: 10 Jun 09 - 08:59 PM I was jamming with a fellow who claims his guitar was a J300 Gibson. This guitar had a double parallelogram as a inlay. It was much the same as my 1956 Country and Western Gibson neck. I did not look the guitar over in detail but the person that owned it bought it used in 1954.The guitar was an arch body style and was very good to play slap chords on, which it was supposedly designed for, thus the reason that he bought it. It had no electrics on it like the L 7 did but I do not know what year it was built. I will see him again, probably when he comes camping next year, as this year was the first time I had met him. The man that I met is almost 80 years old and I really have no reason to doubt him. He did play in his own band back in the 50's amd that is why he purchased the instrument. I will try to find out more information on this guitar if I can. This year was the first time I heard about a J300 and that is why I was checking it out on the net. I am not sure whether this helps or just confuses you more. I will try to fid out more info from him if I can. |

Even though it's kind of annoying, it is admirable that you've been searching for this thing that may not even exist for nearly five years. I'd tend toward being a bit curious to know why this is so important to you-- Anyway, I don't exactly know Jimmy Jitters (which seems like a reference of some sort, and not the sort of thing someone would just grab out of the air) but it seems to me that there is a place called "Jimmy Jitter's Coffee Shop" in Monroeville,PA, on Route 22, a couple miles from the Pennsylvania Turnpike, in the strip Mall that has Michael's and Bed, Bath, and Beyond. It's odd, because it's not a chain or franchise, along a highway where almost everything else is. Good luck. |

Subject: RE: Gibson J300 any info please From: GUEST Date: 24 Jun 13 - 11:54 AM Sorry you are all wrong, the J300 does exist exactly as described made in 1970 it should have been the next in line to the J200 but was a made to order model only, so it never went into production. Gruhn thinks it may be a one off model which makes it very rare. The newer version was just another version of the J200 and is nothing like the 1970 J300 |
Subject: RE: Gibson J300 any info please From: GUEST Date: 26 Jan 14 - 07:11 AM Just been reading a Gibson guitar forum that shows a picture of a J300 artiste circa 1970, I believe this is the guitar in question. Looks a very interesting guitar and nothing like the J200 or J200 custom or the J300 circa 2003. There are major differences to a J200 such as the fleur de lyse inlay on headstock, on the bridge either side of the saddle and on the scratch plate. The Gibson logo on the headstock also states "The Gibson" a sign the instrument was not a standard issue. Also interesting to read that Gruhn Guitars thinks it may be a one off prototype. Curious to know how it sounds! |
Subject: RE: Gibson J300 any info please From: GUEST,guest Date: 01 Aug 14 - 07:49 AM Surprising that there is so little information about such a striking instrument. Maybe just so rare there is no information. |
Subject: RE: Gibson J300 any info please From: GUEST Date: 31 May 15 - 05:46 AM I remember seeing this guitar in 1970 at a trade show in Germany, it was a one off prototype for orders to be taken. Not sure what happened to it though I wish I had purchased it I expect it is now worth a small fortune. The Selmer rep was a guy called John Smith who lived in London at that time. What was striking was the matched spruce top with the fleur de lyse inlay on the scratch plate and head stock, if I remember it also had the same inlay on each side of the bridge. Stunning guitar. |
