I had a rather disturbing message tonight. Ian Campbell (Birmingham) has said that Bob Davenport has died. Could anyone, hopefully, deny this.

I hope it's not true. Bob is a great lad.

I hope it it might just turn out to be a misunderstanding. I entered "Bob Davenport" into Google News, and up flashed stuff about an American sportsman called - here's a report about some famous - Bob, who died on Friday in a town called Davenport in Iowa at the age of 89.

If he has then Peta Webb will be sending a mailout PDQ as he is booked at Musical Traditions on Friday week.

Nothing on Rod Stradling's site, UKMF or BBC

No confirmation from any source, hopefully the rumour in unfounded.

I am now sure the statement from Iain Campbell was incorrect. Only confirms something my old Grandad always said ... never trust a Campbell!

I subscribe to a mailing list for British pro/semi-pro performers. If anything had happened to Bob I'm very sure someone would have posted the news by now, and nobody's mentioned it. I take that as pretty good evidence that he's fine.

It was pretty obvious that the rumour was false considering the lack of anything posted elsewhere. I don't know Bob personally but I did mention the rumour to a mutual friend who confirmed that he is alive and well.

We have Bob Davemnport booked at The Musical Traditions Club, London on Friday 14th January 2005. We were in touch by email yesterday and he is on fine form. All well- wishers of Bob, get hold of his great new CD The Common Stone, on Topic Records.

At least when the word got out (falsely) that Dave Swarbrick had died, he got an obituary out of it.

Touch wood, of course - but if this really was a misunderstanding, that is great news.
